I might pay him a visit. I'm going back again this year. I hope he'll pass on some valuable info. I have been researching making chipao for quite a few years now. Made traditional knotted buttons, self taught hand and machine embroidery. I have even studied fashion to learn the trade and skills when I was younger. I am currently working in a college and teach the next generation skills in pattern cutting and production. I hope he'll give me a chance. I love to learn this and pass on before it dies out.
In Sabah, every end of of May, we'll be celebrating Kaamatan (Harvest Festival). It's like Chinese New Year for Chinese. in this time, we'll be wearing traditional costumes. There are also Unduk Ngadau (beauty pageant) that requires the pagents to wear traditional costumes. I think Qi Pao will be more popular if they held beauty pageant. Of course, that's one way to preserve the traditional costumes.
If they would be willing to teach me i would love to learn to make them because I love sewing and I make a lot of clothes for my friends and family :-)

Liberated from menial labors, mandatory exercise to wear qipaos. It's a difficult time for qipaos.
