Peace and joy to you all.
今天和各位講我足了
Today I'm going to talk about
"I was content."
這一句話很有意思
It is quite an interesting line.
所以有兩句話
There are two Chinese sayings:
知足常樂 能忍自安
Happy is one who is content.
Peaceful is one who is patient.
你能知足就會感到快樂
If you are content with what got,
you will feel happy.
你能忍耐就能可以平安吉祥
If you are patient, you will have
a peaceful and auspicious time.
你每天吃飯不要太超過
Don't make yourself
full to the stomach,
你要八分飽
but eat until you are 80% full.
我足了
If you stop eating
once you feel content,
會身體健康
your body will become healthy.
太多了腸胃消化不了
Over-eating will result in indigestion
就反而有害身體
which is harmful to one's health.
你賺錢
As to making money,
賺到某一個
just earn
我足了 夠生活就好了
enough money to make ends meet.
賺了再多
What if you earn too much
這個金錢
money?
人為財死 鳥為食亡
Money ruins many.
這很多人為了錢財而喪失生命
Many people die for wealth.
划不來的
It is not worth it.
你像很多住在高樓上的
In many office buildings,
總經理、董事長
general managers and board chairmen
在那裡天天在寫支票
are writing many cheques every day
and the cheque amount
幾千萬、幾億萬
can be up to 10 millions,
or several trillions.
多少什麼股票
They also buy a lot of shares
in the stock market
怎麼樣賺怎麼賺
and they earn a lot from them.
我認為那些人很可憐
I think that these people are very poor,
他一生都是玩幾張紙而已
as they only find themselves busy handling
some figures their whole lifetime.
反而一些小民
Some common folks
去買青菜蘿蔔
only afford to go to wet markets
buying vegetables
十塊錢、二十塊錢
which just cost them 10 or 20 bucks
他還能接觸到金錢鈔票
in cash.
是那許多在高樓上的那許多
Working in high-rise buildings,
總經理、董事長
these general managers and board chairmen
他們不知足
do not seem to be content
with what they got.
所以沒有快樂
That's why they are not happy.
所以我們知道
We should know that
世間真正的快樂的人
the ones who are genuinely happy
in the world
人人就是安貧樂道
are those who are contented with poverty,
delight in the Way,
安於貧窮喜歡道德
and enjoy having morals.
我滿足了
I am contented
這個滿足的人生
to lead a life of content.
當然做善事不能滿足
Of course don't ever feel content
doing wholesome deeds;
待人好不要感到滿足
don't ever feel content
treating other people well;
樂善好施不滿足
don't ever feel content
subscribing liberally to charities;
做學問不能滿足
don't ever feel content
in one's studies.
我們追求道德要成佛作祖
We seek a moral life,
and want to attain Buddhahood.
路途遙遠
It's a long quest for the Dharma
不會滿足的
that you can't do without.
善法欲 不要緊
Though it's a desire for wholesome dharmas,
it won't hurt.
汙染 染污欲 就不行啦
But if it's a desire for something polluted,
it won't do,
這個欲望是骯髒的
as it's a dirty desire
欲望讓我煩惱的
that gives rise to defilements.
多了以後
The more polluted desires you have,
就自找煩惱自找苦吃
the more defilements you get.
所以我足了
So "I was content"
這一句話是我一句警語
is a catchphrase for me.
我說《陋室銘》
"Epigraph on My Humble Abode" says:
山不在高 有仙則名
A mountain is known not for its height,
but for its resident immortals.
水不在深 有龍則靈
A lake is sacred not for its depth,
but for its resident dragons.
這一個小小的房間
A tiny room it is,
我在裡面很快樂
I still feel very happy living in it.
這花香不在多
A single flower still smells fragrant.
室雅何須大呢
A small room still looks elegant!
所以有的一個陋室
So a humble lodge
何陋之有呢
is not at all humble.
我足了
I was content
所謂有個一萬塊、兩萬塊
with just 10 or 20 thousand bucks,
我這一個月生活無憂無愁
as that's enough for me
to rub along for a month.
足了
I was content.
我交了朋友
I like making friends.
唉呀 這麼多的善友
Look! I've many good friends
大家互相幫助、互相來往
who get along and help one another.
我很滿足
I was very content.
我來這個世間遇到多少善人
I came to this world
and managed to meet many good guys,
我很滿足了
I was very content.
所以人生你要追尋快樂嗎
So you want to pursue happiness
in your life?
你要懂得知足常樂
Only when you know what is
Happy is one who is content.
你要平安嗎
You want safety and peace?
能忍自安
Only when you have patience.
希望我們的信徒
Hope our devotees
我足了
also feel content.
