    Great time lapse! Amazing to see what we’ve been streaming 24/7 on my computer in ffwd! The amount of visitors are amazing. Now Bob is dwarfed by a “child”.... Ragnar. As long as there are live streams, we will be watching. Mother Nature and Earth are fascinating! Thank you for the opportunity to watch! 😍

    When the new vents opened and the camera changed you could see that the current eruption is just picking up where it left off from however long ago. There were a bunch of times in there where I was saying to myself "oh, I remember this flow, and I was watching when that flow was moving "

    You can see all the people down by the lava the 1st day and by the crater itself at the top of that hill. The mountains around it look large now (today - May 22) the lava in that bowl are at the same height of the mountains. It is going to go over the top of those mountains at some point in the future and those in that town way below it are going to have to move possibly. This small little eruption that was celebrated in many ways is becoming a monster that is going to change the landscape and lives of those there.

    • @stebbigu
      @stebbigu  3 года назад

      The lava will not hit any towns but right now, on May 23 the lava is heading to Suðurstrandarvegur road and will most like cut it soon (weeks).
      That is the most vital infrastructure the lave will most likely ever hit.
      The nearest town, Grindavík, is quite save from this particular eruption.

    In the early days lava was being ejected from this volcano at a reasonably constant rate but recently the eruption transitioned into a cyclic phase, might this indicate that the lava level in the magma chamber is depleting and that things may be coming to a close?

    • @stebbigu
      @stebbigu  3 года назад +2

      It´s pretty difficult to say what is happening bellow the surface but scientists have known for quite some time now that the magma is coming relatively deep from within the earth, 17-20 kilometres is the current estimate. The magma coming from that depth seems to be pretty constant and is said to be feeding a magma chamber which is very shallow and is right under the volcano itself. That chamber fills up with magma and gases, when the pressure reaches certain point the magma and the gas in it goes threw a phase shift which results in the gas expanding and the magma rising to the surface.
      So this might not be a sign of the eruption coming to a close, just a change in the circumstances below the surface. Lava outflow has actually increasing since this phase of the eruption started.
      I hope I´m describing this in the right way. I am not a scientist, just recalling from memory what the experts have said. If anyone can correct me, please do :)

  • @marcellinet8402
    @marcellinet8402 3 года назад +2

    Thank very much you for that great overview of things that happen right now on Geldingadalir, especially for the last few minutes in this video. That gives me a better understanding in a wider concense (excuse my poor English grammar, I´m native German speaking). This helps me more than daylong videostreamings of the hotspots.
    If this spectacle will last for a longer time, maybe sooner or later Grindavik needs to be evacuated, what´s your opinion?

    • @stebbigu
      @stebbigu  3 года назад +2

      I´m happy to share this with the world.
      I think Grindavík and other settlements are in no danger of these eruptions. They are quite far from any infrastructure at all. The first infrastructure the be in danger of being run over by lava is Suðurstrandavegur (south-coast-road) and event it is months away from the lava field. Meradalir (where the lava is flowing into now) is quite large and it needs to fill up with lava before the lava can enter the next valley.
      You may not understand this site but at the bottom of it you can see a picture of possible ways for the lava to go.
      nmsi.is/molar/geldingadalir/?fbclid=IwAR19dMa0jYvOqL_Z9ztPrPR5zEpF5DMAN-QnEPiInpb-n44I2xy_k37owf4

    Some say the world will end in fire,
    Some say in ice.
    From what I’ve tasted of desire
    I hold with those who favor fire.
    But if it had to perish twice,
    I think I know enough of hate
    To say that for destruction ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice.

    • @stebbigu
      @stebbigu  3 года назад +1

      No, it has not hit the ocean yet. The plan is to try to delay that for as long as possible. They are planning on building defences north of Nátthagi valley so the lava cant go down into that valley. If it goes there there is not much they can do to stop the lava from going over the vital Suðurstrandavegur road and other infrastructure and from there to the ocean.

      Þakka þér fyrir. Já það hefur farið dágóður tími í þetta. Mikil handavinna að klippa út lélega ramma og fólk fyrir myndavélini en þetta hefur verið fínt lærdóms ferli að leika sér með þetta.
      Ég myndi alveg vilja halda þessu áfram en það fer að koma að því að ég fari á sjóinn og þar hef ég ekki mikinn aðgang að neti eða fríum tíma. Ég mun samt reyna að halda þessu eitthvað áfram eins og ég get.
      Ég hef verið að ná í eins mikið af efni og ég get en það eru margar stórar og litlar holur sem ég hefði alveg viljað fylla upp í. Vantar almennilegan búnað til að gera þetta 100%. Ég nota annars Lightworks til að klippa þetta til og auka hraðann.
      Svo vonandi verður hægt að nálgast þetta efni hjá RUV einhvern daginn til að gera þetta almennilega en það verður bara að koma í ljós hvernig það fer :)
