Shoe-Drishti - Smart Shoe for the Visually Impaired by Aryavarta Singh || Young Inventor Techfest

There are approximately 62 million visually impaired people in India(highest in the world). The COVID-19 pandemic has created additional challenges to visually impaired people in the form of absence of touch, the primary sense through which they move around. A tactile feeling of staircase handles, walls, and most importantly, handholding by people, is what that gets them to places. But the social distancing has taken away all these support systems. If a visually impaired person tests positive for COVID, the situation becomes worse as health centres are usually set up inside unfamiliar halls without braille systems and disabled friendly facilities. In such a scenario, the risk of infection is compounded.
This work is based on the very basic premise of how visually impaired people can be eased out with a better system for mobility. I have designed and developed a shoe for visually impaired people which can assist them in walking without tactile help. This self-charging and haptic shoe will vibrate upon detection of an obstacle before the person may hit it. The object detection range for sensors are programmable for frontal and sideways proximity (currently at 55cm for front and 30cm for sideways). The obstacles are detected by 3 ULTRASONIC Sensors placed on the shoe facing 3 different directions (left, front, right). The vibration is given at 3 points of the feet to make the person aware about the Direction of the obstacle Also, it has piezoelectric plates, which can recharge the battery while walking. This is very cost-effective (approximately Rs. 2600/-) solution and named as "Shoe-Raksha" meaning safety in hindi.
