- Seriously… is this the best guitar money can buy?? The Gibson Monarch is about as special as it gets! Just watch as Quinton and Paul gush over not only the aesthetic, but the tone too! The Gibson SJ-200 Monarch #81 might just be the best guitar we've ever reviewed. Do you agree?

For 25 grand it should at least have had Brazilian rosewood.
25k? A bargain? Beautiful guitar yes, but calling it a bargain is a stretch. Love what you guys do though. Look forward to these videos every week.
Sounds amazing but for that kind of money you should get a reach around as well.
The SJ-200 Monarch and the Martin D45 are the prettiest acoustic guitars ever made in my opinion. I would be afraid to touch it or breath on it :)
And doves in flight
Quinton King the Monarch is the best.
Greetings from the sunny climes of Basle, Switzerland
"King of all kings," sure, it takes a King's ransom to buy one. Beautiful, yes. But how will you feel when you get the first scratch in it.
Beautiful guitar. Sorry, NOT a bargain, as evidenced by only 81 guitars made/sold . In my 70 years I’ve not met 81 people who could afford one.
All that said, if someone has unlimited funds this is a beautiful guitar.
Thank you.
The primary reason I tune in to these reviews is for the outside chance that I might get to hear Quinton play a guitar like this. Wow...
The J-200: "Everyone should own one."
The SJ-200 Monarch: Everyone that has recently won the Lottery should own one.
Still, compared to boutique guitars often costing much more, this is worth every penny!
Wow...
Ren is THE MAN for Gibson's in the day - they should bring him back to consult on some new designs!
King of the flat tops
Looks beautiful, but just one thing: even though this is not an SJ-200, we all know there’s not much of a difference, except for the rosewood back and sides. But in general an SJ-200 sounds amazing when you hold it and play it, because it sounds big. However, RECORDED it never really sounds big at all! Maybe you hear something different, but I don’t hear it. If I had to listen to this blindfolded and I had to guess, I would never think this is a big guitar. Often smaller guitars sound much bigger recorded.
Nonetheless, I’d be happy to receive one. 😬

I still prefer maple back and sides
Honestly, I prefer the Western Classic Mystic Rosewood.
To answer the question in the title, the answer is, No.
Correct, it compares not to Martin guitars
OMG a real Scotsman
@@penpal222you might want to reconsider that statement someday. Martins are my favorite but good Gibsons simply can’t be beat.
I'd take the Ditson Custom you demonstrated in the last episode over this.
Wow, I would almost buy that one online...which I would normally never do
I would be afraid to touch it!😂. It would have to be in the middle of a room with nothing within 10 ft of me in all directions! But wow! $25,000!
Thanks, Quinton and Paul. I wonder how it sounds compared to a Kevin Kopp Trail Boss? Maybe Paul ought to reserve it until one comes on, and then sell it.
That has to be the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever seen! So WAY over the top but man o man.
Just five months ago Music Villa featured #76 so Gibson has made at least five in the last year maybe more.
My Bob Dylan SJ-200 will always be royalty to me. Wouldn’t be without my Martin D-28 though…
These Monarchs are cool, but they're really cool, but I don't get them. Lol. I got to play on 3 Monarchs, and the standard models are all better, simply due to Monarch's inlays all over the body slightly dampen the vibration of the wood. This recording sounds amazing, but playing it on your own is much thinner sounding. Not to mention these are wall decoration guitars, since they can go up to $40k. But, they're beautiful, and I'll probably never touch one again 🥲 But at least I get to see them all.
I know I’m in the minority here, but I’ve never warmed to Gibson acoustics. The j45 is nice I guess, but for the most part I find Gibson acoustics, heavy, overbuilt and kind of dead sounding compared to competitors. It seems like the finish they use is too thick. Finally I feel like I have to play a lot of them to find a decent one. When I pick up a 3k Martin or Taylor or something comparable it almost sounds and plays good. Hit or miss with Gibsons.
Dreaming of owning one
I’d love if Gibson or Epiphone did a run of the SJ with a non-mustache (reverse-belly or regular) bridge.
Huh? Don’t want your J200 to look like a J200?
@@jed1166 ok…i’ll rephrase…I don’t like mustache bridges…a little while back Gibson made a series of J200s or J45s with Les Paul necks, which was pretty cool…if they could use a non J200 bridge that’d be nice.
@@ProfessorJM1 got it! Thanks for answering… I guess that in my mind, there are certain aesthetic features that define a certain model of guitar or car, or whatever…. Example, would a Jeep, without the vertical bar front grill, look like a Jeep? Not in my mind. So, if I were to buy a J200, it would have to have the mustache bridge, because that is the look… Even though I tend to agree with you that it is a bit of an eyesore, it would not be an authentic J200 without it, just as a Jeep with a horizontal bar grill would not look like a Jeep.
BTW, moved ultra arid Phoenix, so bought a RainSong Jumbo from Paul, instead of the J200. I love it, but still might buy a standard J200 someday.
AND, after thinking about it, I have my own aesthetic that I don’t like… burst finishes! They remind me of the horrible Sears guitar that started this journey nearly 60 years ago… LOL. So, years ago, I passed on a great sounding J45, and bought a D18 that sounded really nice, but not as good as the J45. The true, iconic look of a J45 is the burst finish, and I just couldn’t do it!
My dream SJ would have that mustache bridge, but no ornamentation on the pick guard, minimal pearl on an ebony fretboard and a clear finish on a maple back and sides. Some would say that isn’t an SJ. Anyone can have an opinion.
$30,000 wow
To someone yes! To me no though it's a beautiful guitar!
Let’s see an SJ 200 comparison to a dove both Maple would be good
Lord have Mercy!!!!!! I have a SJ200 Custom. But it sounds nothing like that.
Stunning
Not even a sensible question really. I love Gibsons, I've owned two of the limited edition acoustics and a Keb Mo' Bluesmaster, but á guitar with those specs would be next to useless for me. I might see if I could use the strings to shred lettuce or something, but that's it. My hands would not be happy playing the thing. Love your reviews generally, bought at least a 12-fret J-45 because of one of them, but please keep it real.
Reminds me of Myth Busters "Jamie wants Big Boom !" .
Hey there, please demo the new Taylor 117e. They released a GP model with different bracing into the 100 series and no one has done a video yet.
The moustache bridge and fancy pick guard design ruins all SJ200's for me. I dont really like the crown inlays either. But ive played them and there are awesome. Not gona lie.
Good camping and beach guitar
Even Bill Collings agrees - the inlays do enhance the tone. My D42 sings in a way my Collings with Adi/IRW doesn’t.
Sounds real nice. However, it is just too gaudy.
Quite nice
I like it, but…
It’s a bit shiny. And man o’ man, do I ever hate those pickguards lol. Gibson has the ugliest, gaudiest pickguards in my opinion. That’s really all I could possibly come up with for cons. The pros list is too long for a RUclips comment.
For me, the looks of nearly _all_ Gibsons were an acquired taste. I thought they looked old and corny. Now, I'm kinda digging some of 'em. But then, I've become kinda old and corny myself, so there's that.
@@Joe_Montfortditto
The bass feels great on J200s, but isn’t usably on the sonic spectrum.
Fabulous guitar but why the moustache?
If it's under 6k. I might buy one if you knock off 20% for shipping to UK, I'll have it. Dean 🇬🇧 😂❤
OMG if only I had the nerve to get one. Well, to be honest, the nerve to face her in doors if I did buy one.....
Sure is fancy, also costs a third of what my house me cost 9 year ago me lol
What because it's American made?
I bought a J200 because of you all 😂
25.000 $ 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
It a good guitar, I'll take my d42 over it anyday. It would definitely have a place for some songs, that is why I have 13 guitars.
Overbling; for collectors only.
It’s silly.
Lmaoooo @ 25k
No
Spectacular excessive, and perfect for a classic " nudie" suit on the opry stage❤
25K for a guitar? Get real!
I don’t like it. Gaudy, over blinged, ugly and overpriced. Doesn’t sound that great either. Plenty of better guitars at affordable prices out there.
Steinway!! ?? piano tone LOL!!
Acoustic Letter is my preferred source for SJ 200 propoganda
When my Bitcoin hits 250k.. I will get one just to have one…
I refuse even dream of $5500 Standard version... 🥲
