  • The nuclear bomb brought on a new fear. Us destroying ourselves. We've come close many times, and the question always is raised, what if we just never invented nukes? The world isn't as peaceful as you'd think.

My guess is without nukes, WW3 could have started as early as the 1950’s. I doubt Operation Unthinkable would have happened immediately after WW2 ended, but I’d bet maybe the Korean War could have started it. Without nukes, MacCarthur may have opted for a regular bombing campaign of northern China which may have been approved, which likely would’ve sparked tensions with the USSR had it happened.
Otherwise, the Berlin Blockade could’ve been another trigger, and if somehow that didn’t cause it, then possibly the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

A good starting point would be to look at how Germany and America differ. Also, what happens if China goes communist before the war? In our timeline the two fought each other, but I assume that in the alternate timeline they would be more willing to join forces for WW3. There are even more people and resources in China. If the great leap forward was started early enough it might have a significant impact.

      Exactly what I said! XD
The lack of a nuclear age does not mean the Soviets do not develop conventional missile submarines, conventional ICBMs and ultra-long range, high altitude bombers. Cody forgets the Communist Chinese are a big player too. Russia and China, despite their falling out in the 60's, would most certainly join forces to defeat the West if the cold war ever went hot. They intervened in Korea and deterred the US from directly attacking North Vietnam. I see a hypothetical nuclear-less World War III spanning the globe much more than the video leads others to think.

This isn't over yet. Were I in charge of the PRC, I'd be moving on Taiwan. There are a good number of other flashpoints that could go similarly. It is still a ground war between European powers, and that is what stopped for all that time. Almost everyone else was still going through internally and/or externally generated conflict at one point or another. (also, I doubt Ukraine can be considered minor anymore given the shellacking they're giving the Russians)
In reality, that long peace line is a lie outside of Europe. Always was. Mountains of proxy wars at the hands of the major powers did not create a world of peace, but a world of undeclared wars and far less restricted slaughter.

Remember Taiwan per capita is wealthier than China and regardless if China has magically artillery that can strike every part of Taiwan and enough missiles to flatten the island. The physical terrain of the country for the hundreds thousand plus initial invasion force plus the probably million person occupation force would be a nightmare as Taiwan only 14 small invasion beaches, and they are bordered by cliffs in the hundreds of meters and urban jungles. Sure if the government was decapitated and their was no morale and the U.S or it's allies refused to help. China would probably occupy the island. But if there was a general mobilization of the country, generally good morale and support from the U.S and allies like Ukraine. Then the invasion would be halted at the beach.

    • @RainbowMuse2
      @RainbowMuse2 2 года назад

@@Marylandbrony there are small islands the PRC would take first, that neither Taiwan or anyone else would be able to keep them from taking, which would place all of that within range. Even without that (and they WOULD do that) the PRC's new amphibious military and navy are enough alongside their air force. Taiwan will have no one coming to its direct defense against the PRC. That is why the US's position on Taiwan has been intentionally ambiguous for decades. In short, they're alone, they lack the arms and men to defend themselves effectively, and they are massively outgunned.

I always assumed that if a World War III was to happen that it would be a war with guns and bodies, like the previous two. Now, I see that the bomb's threat is so massive that a war like that is no longer possible... at least not without the bomb getting involved.
If there is a World War III, I think it would likely be a cyber game of how many minds can you control and how many uncontrolled minds can you destroy. This may not be fully possible right now, but technology is not stagnant. While we can measure the power of the nuclear bomb, measuring the impact of mental destruction is far more difficult.

Anyway, clearly you have no concept of what a war with Russia entails. You could look at the millions of highly trained and equipped German soldiers who are now bonefields stretching from the Volga to Berlin.
The Warsaw pact outpaced every single member of NATO's military, Resource spacecraft production, combined.
They were always anticipating you gluttonous colonial freaks attempting a second extermination on Slavs. And they were proven right when the KGB uncovered Operation Unthinkable.
They subsequently re-armed and organised the entire army stationed in Berlin and shipped over all their modern equipment for the combined military parade.
This is where the West saw the monstrous ogre that was the IS-3, and subsequently decided war was not an option at the moment.
Soviet doctrine antipated heavy usage of chemical, nuclear and biological weapons saturating the battlefield. Which is why the BMP and numerous other vehicles were modified to operate in an inhospitable chemical hell on earth with Soviet armour and infantry pouring into ruined European cities.

I've also believed that the existence of nukes prevented WWIII. But I'll go even further and say that it was the actual dropping of atom bombs on Japan prevented WWIII. For if those bombs were not dropped, I don't think people would have fully appreciated the power of nukes (since they'd had not been used "in anger"), so WWIII would have happened, and it would have been a nuclear war in that case.
So prevention of WWIII (or more like aversion of WWIII) required not just the invention of nukes, but also a small scale use of them.

This one gets deep into the weeds of American politics. JFK was the last charismatic Democrat leader that was actually interested in fighting the Cold War. If RFK could have stepped into that role the parties would have diverged less. Reagan would likely have stayed a Democrat instead of leading an exodus and those voters would have anchored the Democrats to what we now call the center right. The far left if it ever rose would probably have had to form a third party, which would have pushed the Democrats and Republicans to merge.

I think you might have underestimated the soviet economy,
You see, the term "seize the means of production" has become a meme, but the USSR was so focused on this, that instead of produce individual items, they produced machines to make more items, this made their economy bloated and inefficient in peacetime as they had too much machinery to produce low quality items than needed and not a smaller quantity of high quality items, but in wartime their economy was probably the best geared up in the world, as within a matter of weeks, they had so much production machinery that they could churn out huge quantities of low quality weapons (e.g, Kalashnikovs) which is why they could sustain huge losses of equipment, couple this with the government having absolute control, being able to fully dedicate the economy to war, and the fact that factories would stop intentionally underperforming to receive more resources (as they were producing for their lives). This makes, I would say the Soviet economy the most effective economy in the world, (although they would still most likely lose).

The problem with actually invading Alaska is this little thing called the bering strait. It would be nigh impossible to send that much materiel without risking naval interdiction. Russia never had enough naval capacity to even BEGIN to try and move enough stuff into Alaska to make any real headway.
About the worst they could do is conventional bombing, which likely would have happened. However, even without nukes, you still have American aircraft being far superior to Russian bombers, and shooting them out of the sky in droves. You'd also have missile technology, even without nukes, and that would be more effective. So you'd see a shelling or maybe missiles fired on Alaska, but really it wouldn't even begin to open up the capability of invasion.
It would have tied up some American manpower and materiel, but not enough to turn the tide.

Sooner or later the big lumbering bear will most likely thrash Ukraine and ground it’s cites to something resembling Syria… but it’s poor logistics is absolutely staggering. Tanks running out of gas, troops running out of food. Of course they are burning thru their most inexperienced troops and oldest tanks… Ukraine wants the West to creat a no fly zone.. but if the West does, THAT will likely start WWW3. I have no doubt the west could defeat Russia but the fear is once Russia starts really loosing - Will Putin push the button? He is threatening it already. That will likely keep the West out of direct involvement in the Russia - Ukraine war. However what’s next? Does Putin go for the Baltic states next? Maybe he goes for Finland instead. Does the West come to Finland’s aid? … what a strange time to live in - just hope Putin doesn’t end the human race because of his ego.
