- Guard Retention: Preventing the Pass and Recovering the Guard -
Most guard retention in BJJ and submission grappling focuses on the leg work involved in preventing someone from passing the guard. Leg work IS critical... but it's only half the battle.
Guard passing and solidifying a pin has a lot to do with what happens in the transition from leg/hip control to head/shoulder control. That's why any work on guard retention must also include the importance of frames at the upper body, and how to use them in replacing the guard. In this video we look at why managing the upper body can be as important as leg pommeling, hip escaping or shrimping.

I’ve watched many of your videos by now and I can say they’re the best BJJ content on RUclips, right on par with the best paid instructionals online. Good job!

Good video. I was getting my head grabbed and my guard passed but now thanks to this video I can at least stop that. Thanks
Very good!
Great instructional - Detailed but not overly explanatory. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful - thank yku
Thank you Coach Glick, that torreondo/bull fighters pass is very annoying to deal with esp from the bigger guys.
I find it very hard to teach Guard retention, because in my opinion you have to understand the concepts of it instead of teaching only moves. You did a great job on that, i would love to see more of your concepts. The biceps frame is genius after he passed your hip line because you prevent yourself from losing the head position after you lost the lower body battle and the rest is also amazing. Thank you Brian!
💯 concepts are much harder to learn than techniques. thanks for your support!
I like watching your subscribers double hope they continue to increase geometrically I appreciate your generosity

Awesome video brian! Ur way of teaching is very good and easy to comprehend
appreciate it - thank you!
Seven years of weak rentention, while all my other areas are grappling sound and strong. Watching this video, I have finally found it, the best retention system that meets my need. Little adjustment for me , tell me what you think: (hard to explain with words) , I put my outside leg on his hips, and one hand, really annoying hand on the back of his head. That hand on his back head isn't nice at all, it really messes with their thinking. I also hold his elbow, , the other leg I use to move around as they force the entry cause guys are stubborn here.
Results: I can retain much, much ,longer, before decide to recover guard, or get up.
Guys hate when I retention this way.
Incredible instruction.
Appreciate it - thanks for watching
high quality as usual
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
nice tip
Thanks.

Shintaro sent me here so I just subscribed.
Thank you :) Shintaro 💪🏼🔥💯
Awesome. This is exactly what I needed. I'm 165 pounds and my Professor is Andy Papadopoulos who's over 300. He's dead meat
Ahahaha
Do you have video on your favorite pass

Thx a lot. I always have problems with guard retention. Q: With this kind of stiff arm posting I am always paranoid of getting accidentally wristlocked if my opponent does some jerky rolls with the upper body /shoulder. Do you have a recommendation for the hand placement?
Is there much reverse engineering with these tactics for the Gi?
The principles hold across both gi and no-gi 👍
Just wow…
Thanks - appreciate your support :)
Will this apply to gi as well?
Yes 💯
what if he has a pant grip on your far leg?
Pant grip on the far leg can be a pain, but it won’t stop you from bringing your near-side knee in to start the process of recovering the guard. Once you square up you can start the grip break process
cool thinks this at least buys me some time to survive lol
Haha sometimes all you need is a moment. First survival, then success 😉
