I watched this as a white belt years ago. Now I’m a purple belt and the principle in this video is my go to for guard retention. Thank you so much for this
Hip escape + half roll. Nice and simple! As a white belt who is still figuring out how to incorporate the movements during warm-up into application on the mat, this video was really helpful. Love your channel Firas!
I've usually seen it without the hip escape. Just invert and swing your legs around. The detail to get the hip in first was really new to me, and makes a lot of sense.
Firas, thanks for posting this video, the little details make the biggest difference! I was getting passed like this by the higher ranks because I wasn't making eye contact or getting my hip off the mat. Keep up the great work, it's videos like this that fire me up to train the next day! You're the man!
this is coming from someone who has no formal education in Bjj... this makes sense. its super simple but it looks very effective. awesome stuff sir. will continue to watch and learn.
Hey Firas, thanks sooooooooo much for this technique!!!! You helpt me soooooooo much with it. The bigger guys allways crushed my guard before. Thanks to YOU now I have a very effectiv tool to stop that and integrate my hips in to my game. Best regards from Germany
Great video, and amazing concept! I wish that you had shown more uninterrupted footage of the drills though. I love your breakdowns, but I wish that I could see the drills alone, to help promote mental absorption of the movements.
love this video Firas! I've been investing a lot of time on guard retention and pass prevention as of late. I remember Oliver Taza showing me this type of drill last year at Marcelo's...cheers my man much appreciated!
What a great comparison between the ball and the rectangle... Having a good pass defense seems to be the number 1 problem for me. People pass me like I'm not there. This video will hopefully help a lot:
Coach Zahabi, As impressive as your jiujitsu is I am far more impressed by your teaching. This video is fantastic. Very effective lesson on the more abstract meta-concepts of guard pass prevention that isn't obsessed with establishing a closed full-guard like every other video. Couldn't be more impressed by how you presented this. A quick question if you don't mind: I realize there are a lot of exaggerated movements for the purpose of demonstration but at 4:28, the position looks quite vulnerable. I loved the anti-G&P demo from awhile back but could you please give a video about G&P defensive meta-concepts like this video? I hope all is well, Nak
Your response made my week. It's been a rough one. I poorly phrased my question. What I mean to ask is how does the application of these concepts differ in a striking context? (if at all) Are certain things not available due to hand position to protect from strikes?
Thank you coach Firas! I do this a lot, so this video is perfect for me. However, I do tend to not look my opponents in the face when I do this, so that's a great tip for me. Will definitely be coming back to this video.
I must try this tonight! My guard pass prevention suucks so bad (but at least its improving my side/mount escapes). Thanks Firas for this great video as usual.
Great video Firas + Tristar. If I may ask/suggest something for future technique videos, It was great getting the weight/force lines on screen and that you drilled left and right variations - however I find it hard to conjure in my minds eye how this would look at mma speed. I appreciate the complicated and tactical nature of bjj, and that it must be broken down to fully understand, please don't mistake me! I would just love it if after you drill and explain some variations, you showed a variation of it at combat pace at the end (though not power of course!). Keep up the great work! ♥
merci Firas pour cette video. I hope to solve some issues I have with my guard. I can't wait for a video on the swiss ball movements and how you find it very beneficial.
very helpful concept with the ball and rectangle. But you must have a very strong lower back to roll like a ball with rounded spine and resisting some pressure in this position.
Thanks for the great content Firas. Will you be doing breakdowns for Dos Anjos vs Alvarez and Jędrzejczyk vs Gadelha? Those fights are a dream for fans of technique and contrasting styles!
As a one-month white belt, I owe to Zahabi my first submission (armlock from side escape). Let's see if after studying this vid I'll finally be able to retain my guard for a few seconds :)
Hello Firas, First, thank you for all you do for us via your videos and guests! Real quick, how did you create or get the grappling “guy/dummy” I see at 7:50 on the right side of the frame? It looks like a standing dummy where you could practice on the legs as if it were standing.
This video is gold. 11 minutes worth hours of training. Explanation / examples / alternatives. All in 11 minutes. Gold. Pure gold.
I watched this as a white belt years ago. Now I’m a purple belt and the principle in this video is my go to for guard retention. Thank you so much for this

thanks you! very happy you are enjoying the content. At 4:28 Im showing you why turning in can be a problem.

merci Firas pour cette video. I hope to solve some issues I have with my guard. I can't wait for a video on the swiss ball movements and how you find it very beneficial.
thank you and yes will try to make that video for you guys in the fall.
Very nice
Outstanding! Thanks coach! Cant play guard without retention, will be drilling this till I am dizzy!
very helpful concept with the ball and rectangle. But you must have a very strong lower back to roll like a ball with rounded spine and resisting some pressure in this position.
Just what i need, ty
Tried the double hooks guard retention technique today with a brown belt and it worked a charm. - white belt, Australia.
Thanks for the great content Firas. Will you be doing breakdowns for Dos Anjos vs Alvarez and Jędrzejczyk vs Gadelha? Those fights are a dream for fans of technique and contrasting styles!
Great suggestion. Thank u
Thanks a lot for the video I was looking to improve my guard pass prevention and I definitely gonna use this advices!!
As a one-month white belt, I owe to Zahabi my first submission (armlock from side escape). Let's see if after studying this vid I'll finally be able to retain my guard for a few seconds :)

i love the ball dummy metaphor
Nice job)

The don't become a rectangle bit actually made me laugh so hard.
