It is now time for the final episode of the Ratchet and Clank Re-Review saga. It's been an interesting journey putting these together, but all good things come to an end. This time, we are taking a look at High Impact Games' Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters for the PSP. My original review of this game being one of my worst videos, so it's time to go back and finish the job!

These reviews go well with The Golden Bolt's reviews, when you watch both of them you get a really comprehensive retrospective of the Ratchet and Clank games. I hated Deadlocked so much, but when both of you went through it, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was and the game had a lot more nuance.

Like equipping "Wildfire" boots, body, gloves togheter with the "Sludge Mk. 9" helmet gives you the "Wildburst" armor set effect. In total there are 6 secret armor combinations. Pretty neat! The armor system is actually a great experiment that i'm sad they did not improve on in later games.

I think you're using the Concussion Gun wrong, as I've been able to deal more damage point blank range rather than the further distances you demonstrated in your footage. the only real "hint" to it is that it's in the name, *Concussion*, as in a mild blow to the head, so it would make sense that closer blasts would deal more damage than farther away.

One thing I've always thought of is how a lot of elements in Size Matters seem to just be Tools of Destruction, but worse. Things like the attempt at a more cinematic story, the Lacerator being a slow-fire pistol similar to the Combustor, the Hive Mine being just a worse version of the Nano-Swarmers, the Giant Clank space segments are pretty similar to the Tools space sections, etc. It makes me wonder if the High Impact guys got to see an early build of Tools of Destruction at some point in 2006 or early 2007 and drew inspiration from it. Or maybe it was the other way around and Insomniac saw Size Matters and decided that they could do better. Or maybe it's just a complete coincidence and insect turrets truly were the next evolution of Ratchet gameplay in 2007. Still, it's interesting to think about.

But you know what doesn't rank up? Giant clank. So the space flight sections just get harder, and harder until it's not physically possible to defeat the dreadnaught before it scratches you to death. And using the super laser means you have to hold still and aim the fucker, so you eat 400 homing missiles and die. Dogshit game design.

Anyway, I was determined to finish this one since I never had before, but (as you mention in your video) the terrible feel of the weapons and janky feeling movement made it impossible at points. I ended up giving up at the first technomite world (around 5th planet in) because I just could not beat that stupud drop ship boss. (For context I was able to get through max difficulty deadlock relatively easily a few weeks prior). At this point I don't think its worth trying to get past the rough parts to finish this game.

I’m a year late here but really all you need to kill Otto is the shock rocket and the static barrier.
If you only use the shock rocket all ammo drops will give you rocket ammo. Don’t even bother getting extra damage in with the weaker guns because then you have a chance to pick up ammo for them instead of rockets, lowering your damage in the long run.

The controls are tight and fast, sure the u turn is annoying but it's never used in combat anyway since you strafe.
The hoverboard sections are hard but you just need to get better as a player to beat them, like for example if you save the boost till the end of the 2nd race, polarizer, you can cheese the entire last bit of the race and take a massive shortcut.

I loved it. The 'Rewind' feature on PS5 - PSP games was super useful. Yeah I cheesed it, but it saved hours of my time.
Fuck up a hoverboard race, rewind a second.
Fuck up a clank mini game, rewind a second. .
    Otto hits me
    Rewind a second
    Otto hits me
    Rewind a second
    Otto kills me
    Rewind a second😢
Otto kills me Otto kills me Otto kills me
    All my childhood
And now, finally with great technological technomite revolution!
Otto was slain in 10 minutes
I beat the game in 6 hours.
    Solid experience
I didn't even know it was made for PSP
    It blew me away.

So growing up as a poor kid until my family got there feet up I remember this psp bundle was the first real gift they wanted to give to me so I didn't have much diversity or didn't play other consoles until I was older but I can say that this game for me makes me happy. I'd be lying if I said it's perfect but I'd also be doing it a disservice to not mention how it helped me get use to puzzle solving instead of just brute strengthing it. I was proud to find the suits and do all the extra stuff so for me it'll always have a soft spot but I can also respect your review from not only as a person who followed the series but as a critic just going by if it's held up thanks for reminding me of where my love of games started man

It's a bit funny how he complains about the weapons being bad when he shows usage of the early game weapons exclusively through the entire game instead of the late game ones. And then he realizes that using the late game weapons to beat the last boss makes it easier. Who would have thought, right?

A little disappointed at the lack of the rest of the series for rereviews, though I suppose the Future Trilogy reviews are fairly recent and seem to hold up well (at least for me), and I'm looking forward to what's next. Your videos being as long as they are make them such boredom killers, especially with what's in them. If you want an idea for what's next, I'd suggest taking a look at the 2010 Ratchet trilogy (All 4 One, Full Frontal Assault, and Into the Nexus), as you haven't done those and I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on them. I've never owned a PlayStation (only Nintendo systems), so I haven't touched any game in the series, but I am interested in the series. Either way, keep up the great work!
Also I know Sony bought Insomniac so there's no way this'll happen but if they make a Switch version of Rift Apart I'm buying it day one.

All kidding aside, I love your reviews, especially re-reviews of Ratchet and Clank. I’m hoping you do Sly Cooper again. This was my first game on PSP, mostly since it came with the used one I ordered off amazon (along with a green lantern poster for some reason) and while I enjoyed it at the time, even as a kid I noticed just how much punishment the enemies were taking in this game. I really wish customizable armor sets had been a thing that returned in later games since I like that setup way more than just having straight upgrades and it reminds me of Megaman X8 so that's another bonus.

If you look at the comments of the gamingbrit's video of ratchet and clank 1 vs the 2016 reboot, one of the developers of RnC 1 spoke up and said that almost the whole RaC1 team worked on Size Matters. So it's not a matter of "different writters different whatever" since it's the RnC 1 writters returning.

well I grow up with it to know now that it's bad, I did 100% the challenge mode when I was kid and bought ryno + every weapon upgrade and the challenge mode will get harder every time you beat the boss fight don't do what I did it doesn't reward you or anything new it just the same thing and the only changes are enemies have more hp and damage and a bolt multiplier so when the challenge mode gets harder the only thing that works is ryno and everytime you run out of ammo with it you have to pay about 200k bolt I think it was it's not that bad because the challenge mode have bolt multipliers every time you kill a enemy still it's a ton of bolt. now time to play the first games that I never played
but hey thanks for the review I always wanted to play the first 3 games now I see how good they are and how bad size matter is.

I got this game on PS2 when it was relatively new back in 2009 and it wasn't that bad granted it might be because my patience is higher than average, but now after seeing this re-review I think I was giving it too much credit. Being a R&C must've made me overlook it's apparent flaws plus my taste in games wasn't near refined as it is now. Also, the conclusion to this video just got you a new sub man! Just completed a casual 100% playthrough. Bolt management isn't that bad, I got everything by making sure to break all crates I saw. Clank arenas are total garbage to get armor sets but only two paths are typically required. Luna boss fight is the most BS fight in game but rest are okay, even final boss if you spam minions, bees, and acid to break shields isnt bad, just requires a plan. I still love this game as a psp game. Arsenal is my favorite R&C game but flaws aside I actually like the difficulty of this game weirdly. Almost like a dark souls of the series with difficulty

  • @taylorabdon856

17:58 The scenes in Vox's office in Deadlocked are actually pre-rendered, so they still technically fit the rule of thumb from those first four games. I get where you're coming from, though - rather than "breaking from reality", they involve real, moment-to-moment character interactions that serve directly to progress the story instead of just providing a background/set-up, so they don't necessarily seem to fit the tone of the majority of the pre-rendered scenes in those games.

  • @djjin5768
    @djjin5768 2 месяца назад

And fun fact, the game has a game-breaking bug, where, should you not manually save on Metalis, after freeing Luna, you're stuck on Kalidon. The cutscene with her after the boss fight will not play out, which essentially prevents you from advancing the story, rendering your entire safe file worthless. And I only know this, because I have experienced that bug first-hand, AS A KID. Even back then I knew, this game is a mess.

I just beat this game the other day after hearing that it's awful for a while. I have to say, I enjoyed it - not as much as the other games on the PS2, but still decent.
The major flaw is how overtuned the game is, feeling close to Deadlocked on the 4-star difficulty but you can definitely overcome with some otherwise neglected tools. The acid grenade at max rank, especially with the augment, is borderline broken with how strong it is.

Size Matters was only good at offering a new Ratchet game that still had the feel of the classic series. It’s pretty mediocre honestly, but what felt nice was seeing that familiar artstyle and formula from the PS2 era that’s lacking in today’s Ratchet and Clank titles.
I wouldn’t rank SM above the modern day R&C titles, but SM does have an element of the series roots that has been lost ever since the transition to the PS3 era, and part of that has to do with the modern R&C series taking itself too seriously from a narrative perspective. I wish SM delivered a more authentic R&C experience, especially in the PS2 port, but I think they made a decent R&C title that was taken out of the oven too soon.

to be frank it's still better than the Non java phone game you know the one android and ios before the nexus.
This honestly isn't that horrible compared to it considering modern gaming.
But reviewers love to rip and tear apart games that are frankly more mid tier than trash nowadays making them seem lower than they are in their titles and thumbnails.
A low quality ps2 era game is infinitely better than a modern mobile game.. especially the kinds that love to drain funds.
Sure for the time maybe it was below average or just average but now for a portable game.. pretty good that is how low gaming has fallen nowadays when it comes to portable games.
I infinitely prefer this over something average from modern portable gaming.

It’s my first ratchet game and i haven’t played it since my elementary days, but now that I recently played the trilogy and size matter so my ps vita-it’s still amazing as I remember, sure there’s difficulty is odd but I was able to beat the game multiple times when I was very young, and I was able to beat the game again 3 more times because it’s so much fun- it’s my personal favorite R&C game and I heavily prefer it over the trilogy (I will not stand the story in Size matter, that is actually poor quality)
I heavily disagreed with your argument with the controls and guns, I think ratchet controls way more faster and responsive than R&C 2 and 3. And the weapons are the best, the reason why the weapons you used are weak is because they’re at low level, I always level up my weapons before going to a hard area, I replay the planets back and through use to level up my weapons and gain more bolts for better weapons- that’s the replay ability size matters has
