    According to this his second book was the great Gatsby! It skipped over 1922 the year his second book came out the beautiful and the damned! The only success he had with his books where this side of paradise! All the others had only mediocre sales! And it wasn't until the late 40s that the great Gatsby sky rocketed to the fame it is now and considered the masterpiece it is now

    Saying he is the greatest American writer is crazy! He only wrote one truly great book... it is noticeably better than the others. Off the top of my head Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe, John Steinbeck, and Mark Twain are all better, each with a larger body of great classics.

    Davud Niven in his autobiography said about meeting F in a bar. He said F was a boring drunk, but occasionally spoke brilliantly, but that was few and far between.
