    650b isn't anything new, nor are some of the 'new ' gravel concepts. 650b as you state is an old cyclotourist size & triathletes used to race on 650b tri bikes back in the 90's. I grew up in the UK. In the early 80's I used to ride with a touring club. We used to roll on stripped down touring bikes. Canti brakes (No disc brakes then), lower ratios on the rear cassette & front 2x cogs & we used to use wider chunkier tread tyres than road race bikes. Every Sunday run included a bit of non asphalt road. So gravel is really the new retro.... Great videos. Keep up the good work

    Recently took the plunge for a bike designed around 650b (OPEN U.P.) and I have to say it is a ton of fun. Up until now, I ran my Vaya with a 700x40c set up for gravel rides. It was fine, but the 650b wheels with some 47c tires, set up tubeless, at around 40psi are a game changer. Will also probably run some 2.1 tires for certain events this year. Supple, yet lively. This is the only bike I want to ride lately.

    Finally got around to get a pair of 650b wheels for my Exploro this month. So far I find them a mixed bag, but I'm not surprised. On smooth roads they are no match for my 700c wheels, which are deep section wheels with 25 mm tires. The 650b wheels are nowhere near the top speed I get with the 700c wheels, and I find I have to work more to keep my speed up. On the other hand, they just fly on gravel and easy single track. Unfortunately I live in a big city so I have to look hard to find gravel nearby, so my "gravel rides" tend to be lots of riding on tarmac before I reach those gravel roads, and them a lot of tarmac to get back home, so my gut feeling is that I'll mostly be on the 700c wheels, except when I'm on holiday.

    Great video. I think you are missing another cool advantage of getting a gravel/allroad bike designed for 650b as well as 700c. You can fit 2+ inch wide 27.5" MTB tires on some of them, which gives you something like a ridgid dropbar XC bike (depending on the geometry of the bike). Quite nice if your ride includes a lot of singletrack.

    I have a 2018 Kona Rove LTD that came with 650b x 47 horizons. Cool tyre. One thing that doesn't get mentioned a lot with these tyres is the frontal area and aerodynamic drag. For me my ftp is about 290w, and I find when using the 47c tyre the bike cruises comfortably at 25km/hr. When I swap to a 700x32c on the same bike applying the same power, the bike will cruise at around 30km/hr.
    Currently I ride this bike mostly on bitumen and sealed surfaces, the 700x32 @ 60psi is far more suitable and only marginally less supple. I think for me a 700x38 would be perfect, and would be on the bike 100% of the time but I just cant get the Barlow Pass tyres to hold air when setup tubeless.

    Hi and thanks for video. I want to buy secondary 650b wheel set my for 700C endurance/gravel bike . Reason - I want a wider tires for a rough roads , basically go from 36-37 mm (which is maximum width of tires with relatively safe but minimal clearance in my bike's frame and carbon fork) to 42-43 mm (650b). Of course I am talking about actual (measured) width.
    I am pretty tall person (187 cm, more than 6' i think) with a long legs. My bike had BB Drop = 70 and BB height = 280, cranks has length 175 (because of XXL frame size). What problems i can expect? Will the pedals to ground clearance at least acceptable for gravel/rough roads, simple forest trails (I am not talking about highly technical XC routes here!). Also bike has road chainset 50/34. Do i need to swap a biggest chain ring to a something smaller?
    p.s. The bike will be still used for pavement rides and commuting with 700c setup (28 to 32 mm).

    The good thing is that 27.5 has good penetration right now, so it's not too hard to find a bike at an affordable price.
    I have a Huffy Parkside (under $200 new) that came with 27.5x1.75, which rode well if you don't mind having to special order tubes and tires.
    But I replaced the tires with Schwalbe 27.5x1.4 (26x1-3/8) that brought it as much to life as a Huffy will do, and dampened a lot of road chatter. And I can get emergency tubes off the shelf at Walmart.
    I've become quite addicted to 650B.

    It wouldn't surprise me to see the bike industry go to a larger diameter wheel for gravel bikes in the future, like they've done with mountain bikes. I have an '86 Univega Nuovo Sport (triple butted steel frameset) with 27 inch wheels and 27x1-3/8 Panaracer SwiftTire Sand Canyon tires. Smoothest riding bike I ever had, it begs to go off road. Very, very stable on loose gravel. It rides nicer than the 2016 Specialized Diverge I had. Only negative is the small selection of decent tires out there.

    • @martinbergman7693
      @martinbergman7693 4 года назад

      @ S. Ivers : That is not correct. The standard wheel size which is referred to as 28" in most countries, and has been for the last decade at least, is also known by the French designation 700C (i.e. 622 rim). As you probably know, 700C is what all road racing bikes must use, to conform to the rules. But traditionally many utility bikes too use 28" wheels, typically with fatter tyres.
      Then there is the other old common French standard 650B (584 mm rim), mostly used with utility and touring bikes,. This is universally known as 26" (except in the U.S. where 26" means the 559 mm wheel popularized internationally with the spread of the MTB in the '80s).
      Historically there have been various 27" wheels, but the only (somewhat) surviving type today is the British 27" version (630 mm rim size).
      To sum up 26, 27 and 28 inches -- those have been the de facto standard sizes for generations, and they still are..
      The non-sensical and ultimately confusing designations 27.5" and 29" are no doubt the result of misguided efforts of some bike company marketing people to artificially make their products sound novel and more exciting, while in fact the wheel sizes are exactly the same as standards used in the industry for ages.
      I guess the marketing strategy of confusing the ignorant but fad-sensitive consumer by inventing new names for established ones has paid out, though.

    • @bhtooefr
      @bhtooefr 4 года назад +1

      I believe the "29" and "27.5" terms come from the mountain bike industry's discovery of larger wheels, where a 57 mm wide tire on a 622 or 584 mm rim produces a 29" or 27.5" overall diameter. (And, the popular (well, before 29 and 27.5, anyway) mountain bike 26" to 26.5" with a 57 mm wide tire on a 559 mm rim, but that's because mountain bikes were developed from old American cruisers with 2.125" wide tires, which is closer to 26".)
      Of course, this all breaks down once you move away from those widths.
      But, then, so do the French sizes - 700C actually being 700 mm diameter on a 622 mm rim assumes a 39 mm wide tire, 650B actually being 650 mm diameter on a 584 mm rim assumes a 33 mm wide tire. (And note that the French system varied the wheel diameter with width, to keep the overall diameter constant, to prevent diameter naming from breaking down... but that means having a different rim size for each tire width.) I suspect not many people running "700C" are actually running 39-622 except on an actual utility bike (otherwise, they're running narrower on a pure road bike, or wider on anything else... and my actual utility bike is 47-622), and I suspect not many people running "650B" are actually running 33-584 at all.

    . . What about large-wheeled mountain bikes? The little independent testing that has been done indicates that 29ers don’t roll faster than mountain bikes with 26-inch wheels. However, the large-wheeled bikes certainly feel different. Our testing found that for optimum handling, wheel size should correlate with tire width, to keep the rotational inertia of the wheel constant.
    It is no coincidence that French constructeurs used 700C wheels for narrow tires (up to 32 mm) and 650B wheels for wider tires. Our testing showed that beyond 42 mm, 26″ wheels result in the best handling. For serious gravel-road riding, 44 mm-wide 26″ tires would be an excellent choice.

    A great explanation on the major differences between 650b and 700c in an easy to follow format. I'm excited to see more interest in the 650b wheel size myself. At the present there isn't as many rim options available as there is for 700c. It would be fun to have a super light 650b wheel for an ultra supple, but performance oriented wheel-set, without breaking the bank.
    Perhaps one small note to add, if your bike was not originally designed for 650b and you decide to change it, the front trail will change slightly too. This just affects the handling by a marginal amount. It's worth noting, and as I understand it can actually improve handling for some bikes or make it worse for others. In that sense, I think its better to have a bike designed specifically for 650b vs. one converted over. The bike makers like to tell us with disc brakes we can easily convert back and forth, but in practice that only works if the tire size used in the conversion preserves the same rolling diameter. Excellent topic!

    small wheels on small bikes for short people makes a lot of sense. but whether tall people really want to switch from 700c with smaller tires to 650b/27.5 with bigger tires keeping about the same overall outside size really depends on terrain and riding style. it's a lot more complicated. they might be better off just getting a mountain bike

    27.5 is the MTB terminology, it's just the circumference in inches. same diameter as 650b (french term). 29er is the same as 700c
    I'm using 650b gravel wheels on my bike because they fit well on an old 26 frame

    For an all-road bike, I put 650B wheels on a SOMA cross frame (Double Cross) designed to take 700 and 650B wheels. I love it, but I do have pedal strike issues. I did NOT buy the SOMA fork: Instead, I used the Ritchie WCS Carbon Adventure fork which is also specified for 700 and 650B. I don't know if that swap lowered my bottom bracket. FYI, I am using 172.5 mm cranks and flat pedals. Once you run 650B at low pressure, you will not go back.

    Just got a new Women's Canyon Ultimate size 2xs with 650b x 25mm tires... My choice is very limited when it comes to tires in that size. I'm hoping brands will catch on and make narrower 650b tires for "smaller" people. And I'm not that small (5'5").

    for the same PSI a wider tire will have less rolling resistance than a narrower tire, and with a 10mm difference aero is negligible(most won't notice anything wider unless racing). handling will be much more stable with a wider tire and smaller rim, also weight handling will increase with a wider tire.
    thin narrow tires are only usefui for 'cool factor' and generally for tenths of a second lap times over competitive racers, thats literally it..

    I have an old 'dale rigid 26er. The wheels are really heavy, and I can't find quality 26" wheelsets anymore.
    I figured I could go from 26x2" to 650bx35mm tires and have about the same diameter. I have two questions: does this make sense, and could I get canti or vee brakes that have enough adjustment range to work?

    For gravel bikes on gravel trails, 650b feels right no matter your weight or size. Get on the pavement and bigger heavier riders will find themselves constantly increasing tire pressure to stop the squirming. A 700c 35mm tubeless tire feels like the best for 90+kg riders looking to do minimal gravel and mostly pavement.
    The stuff I see this channel descending on makes me feel like monster-cross would be a better choice for Clydesdales than 650b. We need the extra volume but can not sacrifice the bottom bracket height (long cranks) nor is the lower tire pressure helpful when the tire is squirming. I do run a 650b on my Bad Habit 1 but that has 3" tires! I want to put swept bars on after watching this channels alt-bar video. It rides like a Cadillac but the stretched out position with flat bars is no fun for longer distances of mostly flat.
    Great channel, love seeing the supple side of cycling and the different needs of riders.

    As for pedal strike, it's easy to get 165mm or shorter cranks, which are a better fit anyways for shorter riders or those with hip or back issues.

    I fell in love with 650b, and how it changed my 54cm ride running 47c WTB Byway tyres. To my surprise I didn't notice any changes to the speed as I initially presumed, that insignificant it was, apart from maneuverability, stand over height, and most of all, comfort. I don't think I will go back to 700c on my gravel.

    • @AndyLeeJordan

      Did you find this true on road as well? I’m starting to think the “700C is faster because momentum” is a myth. Cycling Weekly did a coasting test and the 650B actually won. I’m on a 50cm Surly Midnight Special, riding a lot of (shitty) roads and really contemplating moving to 650B wheels (got it used and it came with 700C).

    • @avenpace
      @avenpace 2 года назад

      @@AndyLeeJordan my bike on 650b 47c behaves like my Specialized diverge from 2020 on 700c 38c with suspension stem and suspension saddle, so it is significant comfort improvement, just from roughly 10mm more tyre volume. If I am riding on the flats long distance, I can only feel the difference when holding the speed on thicker tyres, over 30kmh+ in terms of aerodynamics when riding on it without any bags, but comfort trumps that slight difference, as I am usually packed, but having that flat center section in the tyre is great when riding on asphalt/tarmac, also tubeless is a must with 650b, just to even shave the weight off from bigger inner tubes

    Hi, haven't heard your name between the videos I've seen but I found a bike I like but as an avid cyclist as you are would you trust a Critical Beaumont 7 Speed to be able to pull an Aosom trailer with say 45 pounds of camping gear every once or twice a year and say about 50 pounds of groceries at least once a month. I tried a cheap 700c bike and it just felt so weird. I will look to see if the Beaumont was 27.5 tires. Thanks for your input and hope to hear back.

      yes you do get frames that make use of 650b for smaller riders, but generally 650b vs 700c has nothing to do with your height. I'm 6'3" and ride both - 650b means you can have massive tyres and still have good frame clearence for mud and guards. I can have one bike and swap wheels when i want to ride road or gravel!

    I'm considering the Salsa Journeyman in a 700... or the 650b version. Frames are identical. The 700 is drawing me to it... account of tire size. The 700 has more range. @ 32c to 51c. The 650b's range is 47c to 57c. To run the fat tire.. there is only 6mm difference. Slightly less than 1/4 inch. But the 700 can go skinny down to 32c for pavement. Can't make up my mind.

  • @Klips005

    My bottom bracket actually raised when I tried the conversion, (probably cause of frame style) on a Stumpy hardtail, but i stuck with the 26s (which people often think are 650b based on width) as I felt the small size difference wasn't worth the extra materials…if I get a lighter set of 650b's and better tires than the 26's run, I might try it over because everything went smoothly, just to test all the fuss around 650b lol

    Would it be a mistake to put 650B wheels with 47mm tires on a 700c designed Surly Straggler? The Straggler's bottom bracket is pretty high as it is, so there probably wouldn't be too much of an issue with pedal strike. But I wonder if anyone out there has done it, and what their experience has been? I know Surly will be inclined to persuade people to buy the 650B specific Midnight Special instead. • @gaza4543
      @gaza4543 5 лет назад

      depends on the tire your using 650x47mm is like a 28-30mm 700c, so lowers it 5-10mm max if your used to running 35-40 but most newer bikes can fit 2.1inch tires and thats like 40mm on 700c wheel so then no different in drop (that you would notice). TBH no one thinks about it on a road bike but gravel bike have pretty low BB's in general, mine has a 70mm drop so i have to be mindful. In regards to wieght actually 700c wheels work out 200-300 grams lighter (all up with tires and tier choice and theres more choice) and for some reason all the road plus tires are really heavy and have no need to be compass are making the lightest I've found (i consider anything over 500 grams for a 47mm 650 tier heavy for its given size) and anything under 42mm you may as well go 700c
