Thank you so much, this is EXACTLY what I was wanting for my Drukhari army since I bought them back in spring, and I just had no idea how to actually implement it. And perfect timing, as I'm just deciding to get into a campaign with them!
I just Chaos Black spray can my miniatures and tell people its nighttime. It even works on bases. I dont do anything to my bases and they all look the same making it more cohesive.
Ah, that moment when you showed the sponge, that immediately caught my full attention. I really should experiment with that as a way to get the proper amount of moisture for my drybrushing. Thank you!
Excellent video. Most people are unaware that their cellphones unintentionally bathe their face in the most unattractive lighting, especially in darker environments. Texting during a date is bad enough. Looking like a stalker driving a van is unacceptable.
I've basically used this technique to lazily airbrush some minis up to a tabletop standard. I don't know that I'd put in the work to drybrush for the effect though.
Lyla, are you airbrushing white ink to create the light effect? When I do so and paint over it, the white layer gets re-activated and scraped from the mini. How long should I let the ink dry before painting over it?
this looks interesting, I got idea for a homebrew space marine chapter, called the space ghost or Astra Spectoris. and I am still toying with interesting paint schemes, and I need to remember this, might use this for that cool ghostly look.
If I wanted tu use this technique, I would basecoat everything in it's wright colour and then start the drynrushing afterwards. That way it still would look primarily green, but all basecoats should give the details a distinct look/tone.
Am I the only one, who does not want to cheat, to speed anything up, to "fake" anything or to do anything in 10 minutes? I honestly love this hobby, I love spending time with it, I enjoy the whole process. This is not a hobby for people in hurry. So, calm down, Leyla, you lost your way in all that hurrying. Your channel was something special. Now it is just one more "with this tip everything is so easy and everyone can paint" channel, which I find kinda sad. If you all are happy, cool, I will not bother anyone. But my 2 cents are: Less speed tipps, less slap job, less quick fake, less "monkey see monkey do", and more real painting, more art, more pure Leyla. I would prefer this.
Totally get where you’re coming from, I’m the same way. I want to paint to “learn” not just get something with color slapped onto the table. I think this is geared for those that don’t have an artistic bone in their body nor want to develop their art and still enjoy non gray game pieces in their games 🤷🏻♂️ so…I digress.
This is real painting. Techniques are just tools. Sometimes I want to spend hours on a mini blending and line highlighting. Sometimes I have to paint a unit of 40 goblins and I want the fastest method to make them pop while still getting to put them on the tabletop this century. People paint differently and have different goals. There is no one right way to do this. Thanks for the vid, Lyla!
@@EyeTyrant1979 I think you didn´t get the point of what I way saying. Might be me, might be you. It is not about something being "real painting" or not - technically, of course it is, but then again, in terms of a relaxing hobby, it is not. I just wondered if I am the only one wondering. And it appears I am not. This is has no meaning whatsoever in terms of rating something here or of something being right or wrong :) It is just that I appreciated this channel for something it just isn´t anymore. I do not judge the right of evolution of your content (I have a medium sized channel too and my content made several changes), I just state what I miss and what I think might be the reason for that. Don´t over interprete. Have a great one, buddy! :)
I think you're missing the video's content because you can't see past the title. This video is literally just a tutorial on how directional lighting works using thin contrast coats. Its marketed as a speed hack/easy technique to appeal to a wider audience and get reach, but this is an unusual technique that only someone inspired by a certain scheme or concept would ever even use. Not every project requires an intense laborious painting process to accomplish, and almost always "speed" hacks are just specific techniques that will always have a quality use-case, despite most people using them as time savers. You simply won't get the same effect as drybrushing directionality and using a speedpaint as you will doing intensive OSL painting - and most people don't have the equipment to effectively paint OSL in the first place; sometimes its less about "saving time" and more about not needing to fork out an arm and a leg for a variety of high quality paints or an airbrush. And the guy saying that people wanting to add a certain (incredibly niche, mind you) technique to their toolbelt "don't have an artistic bone in their body" is ridiculous. I don't mean to come off as any more rude then I see these comments coming off of - but this thread absolutely reeks of pretentiousness.
Working for the last couple years with architectural lighting designers, the term “uplighting” pings my subconscious like a storm siren.

Oh I absolutely use that, no shame at all

lol. This made me laugh--best part of video.

This really comes in handy! I was about to start a project with osl and I am a noob with no idea how to start haha Thank you!
Neat! I think you could use something like this for Alpha Legion to do their two-toned colorscheme
That is a awesome easy way to do OSL! Thanks for making this vid.
Oh I really like that :) will test tomorrow

Love this! Been trying to figure out how to do this with my Grey Knights... want them to appear more ethereal!
Love seeing this technique demoed using a drybrush!

That's really cool.
IMO this is an amazing trick, and to help out feeling how OSL works, to be able to nail it in the future.

What vid has the DIY drybrushing sponge? No link appeared for me.

I did a search once underside zenithal i think is called nadiral. Root word is Nadir. 😊
Nadiral sounds like a drug. “Take Nadiral if you’re feeling down and want to brighten up your mood from below!”
Would love to see how you apply this technique to a smaller area.
So “nadiral” highlighting? Love it!
Great vid, but what about the other details like the face, weapons, clothes?
You should paint them
@scottyboy6269 really, didn't think of that
@@deez3913This video is about this particular technique. She has many videos on those and other topics.

@deez3913 to help everything look cohesive, you should mix a small amount of the OSL colour into other colours.
I like the OSL = Object Slapchop Lighting
I love this video ❤
You earned a subscriber. Well done you. I also liked and shared. Its your lucky day.

Wow wow wow... wow
Nice technique, awful music.
