For me, with Jag, it's always been about the ride. They can come up with different suspension configurations all day but the overall ride quality is always something exceptional.
great review Bob, I see a ton of them in the Netherlands, it would not have a hope in hell without government incentives, but i really hope that Jaguar does well with in, they need some successes
Wow Thanks for the fantastic review, I haven’t purchased an electric car as yet,but I feel certain I will as soon as there are more charging stations. This Jag looks to be a strong contender. I want to see what the Tesla model Y is like first, and perhaps see a few more reviews about Audi and Mercedes.
Great review Bob, I enjoyed it immensely. The only downside for me (a BIG Jaguar fan) is the price of the car. Yes it's gorgeous but at nearly 100,000€ it's an awful lot of money.
It's a beautiful car. Saw one and sat in it and thought it was super cool. The range is a bit on the pathetic side at this point though (for the price) and I worry about so many fancy electronics from a company known for electronics issues. All in all im happy that Jag took a shot and it made a heck of a good looking EV.
I'm sure the actual usable distance will be determined in ideal conditions by car companies for EVs as it has been for petrol diesel. "This is what you can get" then in small print at an altitude of 2000m on a 5 degree slope with a tail wind
That was true of the NEDC test which was done in a lab with the door gaps taped and every other trick in the book. WLTP, the new test, is harder to game... at least at the moment. It's still not as good as the EPA numbers from the US (which give an EV range for vehicles Irish driver should expect to meet or beat.... at least in summer). Unlike NEDC you can generally reach WLTP range if you hypermile, but it's realistic to take 10-15% off the WLTP range for the average driver. The biggest argument I have against the iPace (bar the infotainment lag) is the pretty poor efficiency. They get a real world range of 350-400km out of a 90kWh pack which works out around 225-250Wh/km. That's terrible, Tesla's numbers for comparison are 180-210Wh/km, with the top end being the Model X (which is a much larger vehicle than the iPace). Jaguar should have got more range out of that pack, something is off with either the motor design, aerodynamics or power electronics.
What a really good review. Thanks. Obviously a high quality car, put together well. The charging thing you mentioned is, I think, more to do with speed of charge than whether it works or not. Public chargers, which all EVs use, apart from Tesla, Max Out at 50kW. In practice they pump out about 40kW. So on a long journey, if you have a 90kWh battery being filled by a 40kW supply, it will take about 2 hours to fill. For me, and probably most owners, that would be too long. Tesla do seem to have it cornered. Not only are their sites everywhere, but they pump out juice at 120kW, so probably 90-100kW. So about half the time to fill up. I would say that transforms the car into a long distance car. I really wouldn’t be wanting to hang about for a couple of hours every time I needed to refuel. But I think this is only really important on long trips; the average user will fill up at home, overnight, so it won’t matter that it takes hours. And that’s where the improvement in build quality will come into its own. If you only make long journeys (350km+) once or twice per year, perhaps the charging thing is liveable with. If so, the iPace looks just the business.
Had a brief argument with a Tesla fanboy few weeks back when I disagreed with i1Tesla channel when he said the Model X had better build quality than an iPace. Ridiculous!! 😂😂
I'll start by saying I started with Jaguar in a 1970 E-type and while I'll trying most of the good ones, my daily driver is still a Jaguar. I like cars built by established manufacturers but with electrics the big switch and delay in development has lost them a ten year head start. You do a nice job in the way you analyze the features of the I-Pace, but honestly as an American ( I know, Bloody foreigner ), I had trouble understanding your accent. Your production quality might be enhanced by a lapel mic and just a bit slower in your presentation. Classy thumbs up ! I must say the title drew me in because I've looked at the I-Pace and really thought I'd like it. And I do, with a couple of caveats. As a first effort, I think it's crackin' ! Here comes the but, the tech in the Jaguar is really clunky and the battery and drivetrain fall far from the Tesla's as they are nowhere close on miles per kilowatt and charging speed or infrastructure. Don't get me wrong, I think Jaguar has made a bold first step when others have clearly said we'll see how it goes and are playing warp speed catch up. My final thoughts are that it is a bold move by Jaguar and they have my support and admiration for being a high quality, low volume manufacturer. It will take a more focused effort for the next effort. Best ever EV, not quite yet. But getting a lot closer. Cheers Robert
You're not far off on the Land Rover Vogue comparison for the infotainment system lag... it's the very same system underneath the hood. I'm also not sure I trust that air suspension they've put in the iPace above the base grade one, it's the same one JLR has had serious reliability issues with on the Vogue.
I think I see the future of Jag interiors here, I'm not a fan of their present ones, apart from the large saloon, they are a bit dull, but they seem to have put more effort in with this one. Hopefully they will take this design language over to their saloons
Great review bob as always bob! Really interesting, before you said it if I had the cash I would get this over a Tesla. How does it compare to a Audi Etron as they are both in the same price range, targeting the same audience
I'm still waiting for a go in the E-Tron, Audi Ireland have one but they seem reluctant to put it out with the press for some reason. What I know is the iPace ticked every box I had in the luxury segment including range. I actually think Jag are targeting a higher customer with it
@@BobFlavinVideo There's one in Audi Sandyford and they even let me have a blast down the M50 in it so mustn't be that fussy about who they let behind the wheel. You'd love it Bob, loads of soft plastics, buttons, switches and cubby holes :)

Yesterday past a gentleman driving a Jaaaaaggg doing 70 on the motorway in the middle lane, was about to curse him until I seen he was wearing a wool jumper and smoking a massive sigar.. that's the Jag class I think you're talking about.. (true story)
Great review Bob, but I wouldn’t trust a Jaguar with my own money, I’ll wait for a fully electric Lexus Jeep at least you know it’ll be totally reliable.
great entertaining review, agree with it mostly. But in terms of drive feeling it is far behind Tesla, I would take Model 3 any day of the week. I also found the OS slow and clunky. Jag have had a good crack at it but in the end the range has let them down. Hopefully their next model will give Tesla a bit more competition.
It's finished like a luxury car, while the 3 is finished like an econobox. For nearly everyone the range is perfectly adequate...and you get to drive in style. There's no basis for saying it's "far behind Tesla" in "drive feeling," whatever that's supposed to mean.
I have to say Jaguar did a lovely job designing this. It's a great looking car. The Straight Pipes recently reviewed this and the infotainment was very laggy in that particular car, have you found that Bob?
The Jaguar IPace is a well built electric car, that has a lot of things going for it. However, this can clearly never be the best EV. The Model S Maximum Range 2019 Costs about the same ($88,000 Vds $85,000 for FE), is larger (more space, more Storage), is faster, charges faster, more efficient, more powerful on processing, developes over time, and has a much more extensive quick charging infrastructure in any given market. I like the ipace, but it clearly very far off being market leading in any way.
Range and charging networks have nothing to do with being the best car. That’s a technicality that Tesla fans always fall back on. The best car has to be able to do what it’s designed to do, be a car and rewarding to drive. Tesla seems to be currently trading on long range and autopilot. Soon you won’t have to drive at all and then it’ll make no difference.
Bob Flavin The range and charging infrastructure are the two main factors that determine the usability of an EV. How fast can you get from A to B? How much planning is required for longer rides (aka. Do I need to worry about getting from A to B or can I just focus on enjoying the ride)? How much does riding my car cost me (efficiency)? All of these are factors that make for an enjoyable car. And an enjoyable car is a good car... Therefore, I have to disagree with what you say.
goddamnox Apples to apples, please. The base Jaguar has a manual tailgate, no heated mirrors, non leather seats, no active cruise control, lane keeping or the like, only 18 inch wheels, seats have no memory function, they are only semi powered and have no heating. You are comparing a base car that has everything included vs a Base car that is just basic.
Saxman t you clearly haven’t understood the point of superchargers. You can charge your Tesla at each and everyone of the other chargers. Usually, you are only charge the car at home. When you go on long trips, where you need to charge in between, you go to a supercharger and are ready to keep going within a few minutes. That’s when the speed matters. If you go less than 40 miles, you do not need to charge at all. I am not from the Us by the way. In Germany, and Continental Europe for that matter, the vast majority of fast chargers (100kW+) is Tesla SC.
It does have the edge over Tesla because of Jaguars decades of experience but I still admire Tesla for showing just what is possible in an EV. If it wasn’t for Tesla you might not have been test driving this car for quite some time.
Using Jaguar brand for 18+ years and this is my horrible review with the I-PACE. I've had a horrible experience with Jaguar's I-Pace. I had the vehicle for a year, and have only been able to drive it for approximately 2k miles. It has had issues with battery, software malfunction, charging system, and even when you would try to start the car it would make noises. Its a shame that Jaguar has tainted its brand with such a problematic car. If you want to be walking to places instead of driving, BUY a Jaguar I-PACE.
I have had mine nearly 12 months now , without fault or complaint . Must have to say it's better to drive than the RR V8 SUPERCHARGED that I sold 5 years ago .
