    If you want to go with a rational explanation for the events in the story there is the theory that witch hysteria was partially the result of ergot poisoning from spoiled crops. (We do see that their corn crop is diseased in one scene.) Ergot poisoning apparently causes LSD-like hallucinations. That mixed with religious fanaticism and this family’s isolation could cause them to all lose their minds. I’m not totally convinced ergot poisoning is a legitimate explanation for historical witch hunts, etc, since humans are already extremely good at behaving ridiculously superstitious and horrifically violent.

    Charlie the goat who played Black Philip was an incredible diva! All he wanted to do was lie in the sun and get his belly rubbed. He hated the actor Ralph with a passion and injured him with his horns.

    Great reaction guys. My family has lived in New England since the early 1600s, mostly in Massachusetts. My grandmother, now nearly 90, heard stories like this growing up, passed down from her parents, their parents, etc etc. My mother told me of a so called “white witch” who lived in their hometown in the 1960s. An old woman, probably born around 1880, who lived in a cabin in the forest. She lived to a great age, yet appeared much younger. There are nearby cemeteries going back to the period of this film, containing headstones engraved with symbols and messages seeking God’s deliverance from “necromancers” and “beasts.”

    If you guys are into the history then at the very end the chant around the fire is an actual 16th-century occult language apparently revealed to John Dee by Angels. I also Love how the devil is dressed as a Cavalier it really is a puritans nightmare!

    That's ironic, she joked about being a witch but in the end she became the witch

    As a modern witch myself, i freakin adore this movie, i love studying the occult and history, all those poor women wrongfully accused and killed is so sad.

    People will believe what they're conditioned to believe. Our societies inform our beliefs and our norms, and we are not necessarily too advanced today for people to believe in things like Satan possessing animals. People get into weird social bubbles, and they're liable to believe anything, in time.

    The family does believe in ridiculous things but given that this is the 1630s, no internet, religious indoctrination since childhood with hardly any opposing opinions, all deemed evil. Plus, all these red flags, Sam and Caleb both disappearing after being with their teenage daughter, then the little twins accusing her of witchcraft. Given all this information with the little knowledge the family already knows, it makes sense that they'd suspect her.

    Two things.
    First: the movie just sucks you in.
    Second: why the young boy did not get an Oscar nomination is a complete shame.

    The aspect ratio is 1.66:1, an old standard, particularly in Europe, for many years. Just as he used a silent film aspect ratio (1.19:1) for The Lighthouse, and Vittorio Storaro's preferred aspect ratio of 2:1 for The Northman, Eggers always makes interesting choices with the shape of his frame, which depend very much on the individual project.

  • @jamesoblivion
    @jamesoblivion 2 года назад +5

    Robert Eggers, I don't think it's overstating to say, cares more about historical authenticity than most filmmakers who work in period settings. I recommend all his films. The Northman was stunning. Can't wait for his next project, whatever it ends up being.

    Please watch the 2003 One Missed Call. It’s on the same level as Ringu and Ju-on and is super underrated. The American remake gave this movie a really bad name and I’m here to redeem it lmao.

    So I’m a linguist and whenever I hear people from England act as if American English is somehow an adulterated form of British English I always point to examples like this film (which used 17th century transcripts of colloquial English to construct its dialect) and remind them that if Colonial Americans heard the two of us talking to each other they’d probably find both dialects to be deviant but would be a bit more familiar with specific UK dialects in terms of pronunciation. Take it back to Shakespeare and every modern English dialect is so foreign he’d be hard pressed to identity a “standard” among them.

    Eggers and Ari Aster are two of my favorite directors out there right now. Can't wait for the Northman to come out ! Hope y'all check out the Lighthouse too for the channel
    (edit) I commented before I'd heard you've already seen the Lighthouse lol. Also the ratio for the VVitch is 1.66 : 1 which I think Kubric also used for Barry Lyndon

    Great film, great reaction! Don't know whether or not it would be of interest. But last year I saw a movie called The Medium which is a pretty slow burning movie but also well worth the time! Definitely one of the better asian horror movies of recent years.
