I've been thinking about doind the greenscreen thing for a while now and you are giving me the knowledge I need to start. I really appreciate these videos. When I was knew it was so hard to find any answers about how to do anything on RUclips. The last time I looked, there still weren't very many quality tutorials about much. I hope you continue with this :)
This is awesome. If I ever move into a bigger apartment, I want to invest in some of this stuff. I've messed around with chroma key a little bit but never to this extent. My biggest problem is that my apartment is tiny, and I don't have proper lighting. I'll keep that website in mind though, when I finally do have the space to utilize. Thanks, Mark.
thank you sooooo much. i was on their website and i didnt see the muslins and i bought the plastic one and they basicaly work like crap. i mean when i had lights on them, my camera would pick up white spots from the light reflecting on it. so i'm so glad you posted this video. (sry my comment is too long i have to write it in another box)
This is 2007 , so you're telling me you can write out an annoying youtube comment but you can't stop to see when the uploaded the video!?!? You know before RUclips HD existed!
thanks for the info! I got my green screen from Tube Tape and they were exactly as you said about price & quality. Thanks so much for sharing your expert info as i am learning so much from you. Please keep sharing. I am a big fan of yours. Douglas
I just ordered my first 10x12 green screen!!!!!! thank you so much for the advice and notification from the sight. it really is a reasonable price for pretty much everything. thanks and have a nice day!!!!!!!! :) #somuchlove
i use both table cloth and a 7 dollar cloth from an arts and crafts store. The cloth is very durable and fairly large for the price. I suggest checking your arts and craft store for whatever cloth you need before you start buying off the net.
Man thanks so much for this info. I have had trouble with my chromakey looking good. This helps out alot. Esp for my show Tales From The Graveyard Shift!
Hi Bigs, It depends on your software. I use Sony Vegas (I am no expert and learning about this stuff myself) However, with the good software you could key out any color. Green and blue is used because it is as far away from human skin tones and you won't key ur self out, so ur walmart sheet might be a good starting point. I just got CS3 and having trouble spinning up to same level of skill I have on Vegas. But I am PSP guy too, so vegas is very intuitive for me.
I dont know if this is cheap enough but i just bought Sony Vegas 8 platinum for around 130.00, and i just used chroma key today and its soo easy and works simple, and great
Thank you for your help. I will try the cloth. I also have one more question, When I try to chroma key out my green screen, I have to do it frame by frame, or I keep seeing spots and stuff in it. Might be my camara and lighting also. But wanted to know if you had a tutorial on this without me having to do the keying out frame by frame. Thanks.
Ok people, listen to this guy, he knows what hes talking about, i bought a plastic green screen, it had a gazillion permanant holes in it in less than a week. so i just put in an order for the muslin cloth one.
Hey what color is better to use?? Blue or Green?? I'm going to get stuff pretty soon but I need to know the basics and experiment from there...also the website you said go to is pretty awesome
Hey Mark. Great videos. Thought Id ask you a question seeing as your king of chroma key. lol My question is about lighting for the chroma key. I have the same material and lights you advise in this video however I think I need to diffuse the worklights to help get even lighting. How would you suggest we do this using the worklights?
Lowes has the same 500 watt work lights for $30. They also have little single 500-watt work lights for $10 each, but they have really short cords so you have to get creative with those.
Sweet Vid. Where did you get your animated backdrops. Im looking for some. By the way, i know it seems cheap, but i had a green tablecloth (plastic) laying around so i decided to try chroma key with it. IT WORKS GREAT. So for all of you who dont want to spend 50 dollars+ on a muslin, a green picnic tablecloth works fantastic. I used blue painters tape to tape it to the wall to protect the paint. It is not as durable though. But for my purposes it works great.
THIS IS GREAT.. now i know what to buy.. where to buy.. and i can actually get a big green screen and 2 lighting and maybe a stand for under 120 dollars! CAD
Chroma key paint can be very effective if lit properly. I was in a digital media program at IRSC and walked into the chroma key room. They had the wall li, and the floor was curved up to the wall, all in chroma green. I couldn't actually tell where the floor ended and the wall began, nor could I tell how big the room was. If you turned toward the chroma wall, all you could see is flat green with no indication of depth, lighting variation or anything, It was pretty freaky, like 0 255 0 vision
the cloth is about the size of a standard door and its a very close true green. to chroma key, you don't necessarily need a TRUE green or for that matter, it doesn't have to be green at all. For some of my projects I have used a solid white or even a solid black background. As long as the piece is solid and a different color from the actor in front, you should be able to key fairly well.
HI, great video, but I have the material from walmart as you can see in my video. But it's not cloth, Could you tell me which is better, I paid $1.97 per yard, and the cloth one is like $2.97 per yard. So what I am asking, should I get the cloth one that they have at wallmart. Thank you.
Hey Mark, lovin the vid! I had a question. My dad and I are finally about to get some lightbulbs to start chromakeying. Do you think it would be safe to Scotchgard the muslin?
@pureGAGA THANK YOU!!!! that's what I did. 1.Key paint - 10 dollars a gallon 2.Key green table cloth or in the garment section, key green material is 15 dollars a roll. For smaller projects, use one of those science fair tri fold thingy by elmers glue company, cost 4 dollars, and buy neon green spray paint non-glossy - 3 dollars Now spray the inside of the folder. Also, if you buy one of those lazy susans at wall mart, they run for about 9 dollars each
I got green screen fabric from JoAnns for $10, a set of halogen 1000 WATT TELESCOPING WORK LIGHTs from Home Depot for $29 each (2lights per kit), and Home Depot can match any paint color if you bring them a sample.
I just did my research and found out that Tube Tape is located in California, where as (from info from his RUclips channel page) Mark lives in Pennsylvania. Now I am from England so by using Google maps I discovered that those two US States are '1 day and 20 hours' away from each other. I believe that to be slightly too distant for him to work there.
where do you get the cool video backdrops?? like the globe spinning, the bubbles, and the backdrop at the beginning?? i use chroma key on pinnacle and i dont think that pinnacle comes with backdrop videos for it a greenscreen..
for the paint find some material at the local store for sewing or whatever that is close enough for chromakey and take it to walmart, home depot etc...... and see if they can match the color and mix the paint for you I garuantee you it won't be 50 or 150 dollars, I haven't tried it yet but they saw that can match paint to anything and I have seen material in that green that will work
for no shadow chromakey on the lighting use UV Dark Light it's get better brighter than an simple white light. and it's very cheap to buy, you can find that on any DJ lighting shop.
im new at this and i was wondering if i could use like that bright green posterboard. and other wise could i use regular green or blue bed sheets? please answer thanks
What kind of angle (90 - 180 degrees) should the lights be set at? Or how high positioned? How do you assess if it is well/fully lit or not? Is it a matter of having someone sit/stand somewhere to see what kind of shadow is cast?
Sure, just make sure it's not shiny as synthetics often are, and match the colour nicely - it should look quite a bit darker than the background of this video (it is flooded with 2kW of light, remember?), and contain as little white/red/blue as possible.
I'm worried about light coming through the muslin from the back when it's on a stand. Is muslin typically dense enough to keep ambient light from behind the screen from ruining the key?
question: can an average dude like me get the same basic quality chroma key effect that you do while using a freeware like WAX 2.0 or WIndows Movie maker or should I invest in one of the softwares like Pinnacle, Sony Vegas, Etc? Please help, want to learn.
can i use a dark blue blanket as a blue screen very curious because its preety ig and the same colour as a blue screen you would buy is that possible?. even if im told i cant im gonna try it out anyways
whats the defferent between a blue screen and a greenscreen?are they use used for the same project, because i see people using the blue for skin effects.and where can i get a good deal for the softwear and the chroma key set?thank for your time.
@HannahBanana12454 yeah, it came with one of those things that look like a sun blocker that you use for the front window of your car to block the heat or some thing. as far as help goes, either sell the green screen thingy or return the whole product back. however, vegas is a pretty kick ass editor.
I am creating a webcast that involves a lot of magic, photo back grounds that need to be droped in and fair bit of CGI. what programs would you recommend for a project like mine?
Frank Zappa is a hero to rock jazz classical experimental . He died 1993 do to prostate cancer. In the year 1994 I was born into this world. Love you Frank Zappa you always tend to amaze me with your seeming to be endless selection of music R.I.P
Yes, technically red would work, or any color for that matter. Green and blue are just kind of the easiest to light and aren't commonly found in the foreground. Red would work fine though.
k, i have a question, me and my friends have a webshow thingey and we don't know a lot about "green screens" but, we really don't want to spend a lot of money, so do you think we could use like a green or blue blanket, or just a giant posterboard, because we really dont want it too big so um yeah!
Hey i just watched your video from 2007, this was very helpful information for me, I'm gonna check out tubetape.com to see if it still exist. Would u happen to know ho to do special effects within green screen?
I've been thinking about doind the greenscreen thing for a while now and you are giving me the knowledge I need to start. I really appreciate these videos.

Mark. I really like these types of videos! You are an excellent teacher when it comes to the technical! Bravo! 5/5
Excellent video! Very well made and informative.

Great video Mark. Very informative. That saved me a bunch of time with learning stuff from trial and error.

Thanks for buying the Pro Kit from us. The worklights are for people on a budget :)
Thanks for making this man! You make these videos very well.
This is 2007 , so you're telling me you can write out an annoying youtube comment but you can't stop to see when the uploaded the video!?!? You know before RUclips HD existed!
I have a 25x18 cloth green screen material I got at walmart for $1 a yard, but was having trouble with the lighting. thx for the help!
thanks for the info! I got my green screen from Tube Tape and they were exactly as you said about price & quality. Thanks so much for sharing your expert info as i am learning so much from you. Please keep sharing. I am a big fan of yours.

yea, i got the 12x9 green screen, it came a few days ago actually =D it works really well, i just don't have really good lighting yet or a clear wall
Lowes has the same 500 watt work lights for $30. They also have little single 500-watt work lights for $10 each, but they have really short cords so you have to get creative with those.

thanks
Chrisc74
thanks a lot for this, I brought a 9x12 green muslin from them the other day
does it matter what colour of green it is?

I saw on a forum somewhere the exact color code. Try googling it!
Bed sheets are usually too thin and not the right shade of green.
We use FXhome CompositeLab Pro
Some great tips there.

I use Final Cut Express 4 for Macintosh, works great.
Yes, technically red would work, or any color for that matter. Green and blue are just kind of the easiest to light and aren't commonly found in the foreground. Red would work fine though.
