🇬🇧 Foreigner Rages on Thai BTS - "NOT RUDE" or Defamation? A Linguistic and Cultural Analysis
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- After my clip yesterday, many Thais have requested that I put this out to the world in English - On the 11th of July, a foreigner launched into a tirade of profanity at a Thai passenger on the BTS, telling her and others to "Get the F##K out of the way" and "Shut the F##K up," among other things. He insisted that his language was not rude and claimed that the only reason she misinterpreted it was because she didn't speak English well enough.
This clip delves into the language used and examines the fascinating power dynamics that emerged during this brief incident in Bangkok. There are numerous valuable lessons to be drawn from this in terms of linguistics, culture, and social interactions.

In Thai culture Even talking loudly is considered rude. นี่ผมพูดในนามคนไทยครับ
In the US too, but it happens all the time. Very low class.
I thought that then I listen to gf and staff talk in another room and just laugh it’s like a screaming match honestly
I was there. The video was cut short. It left out where I and another foreigner interrupted him and called him out on his rudeness. He kept insisting that he was from Brooklyn and that it was our fault that we could not understand that his language was polite Brooklynese. I pointed out that he was not in Brooklyn but he persisted in his obnoxiousness.
What race is he ?
Good that you called him out. It is shocking how some people behave as guests when visiting a foreign country. Bad enough not being able to speak the language (I would be guilty of that), but at least I would have the grace to have some humility.
He committed the biggest sin westerners make of being arrogant and not having a clue that he is in another culture as a guest. Is this increased with ignorant Instagram tourists, I don't know, but he was off the charts wrong.
@@nickphang2293losing race 😂
lol, I knew he was coastal from his manners. It’s not even that he is from Brooklyn, they are notoriously well mannered. He is naive and stupid is why he is so rude. Shouting “get the fk out of the way” will get you knocked out in Brooklyn.
The guy in the video is such a jerk. As Americans, we apologize for his childish and inappropriate behavior. 🙈
It doesn't matter where you are in the world. This kind of behaviour is not acceptable.
Tourist, foreigners should be kind to locals.
I presumably this guy be able to fight only with a lady 😂. True gentleman wouldn’t do that to the ladies.
This man was started with no respect for others in the public areas.
Ruded actions and words
He was rude. People need to adjust their attitude to the culture. Being from Brooklyn is no excuse. A-holes like that give all of us Americans a bad name.
It's not an excuse, but it's definitely a reason. Have you been to Brooklyn? This incident is totally unsurprising to me.
@@CaptainKremmen after all my time here I'm still surprised people come here with the attitude that it's acceptable to act this anywhere, especially as a guest in another country.
And yeah, I've spent time in Brooklyn.
@@thailandinnercircle Note that I didn't say it's acceptable, just that I'm not surprised.

As Thai, I don't care that much about how foreigner came to Thailand and can't speak Thai.
If I were them, I would not learn Thai just to travel here too. English or Mandarin on the other hand are better.
But the way he talks. If he was arguing with a man, no way in hell he would make it out of the train in the same condition before he get in lol.
My blood boiled up just watching it.
right, because Thais are often not as peaceful as they want people to believe. Honestly, we only saw part of the video, there is probably a lot more going on.
The F-word is rude. In other news, water is wet ;)
Yes farrang is rude word.
@@daddy9267 What is a more polite Thai word that should be used to refer to a foreigner?
I really appreciated for your speak out. Thank you for your existence. Wish you a happy life and peaceful mind

At least be respectful and on your best behaviour when on foreign soil because you're representing your country. If you behave badly for whatever reason, they will think all your countrymen are like this. Learn a few basic Thai phrases, even if its just hello, excuse me please, I'm sorry and thank you. It will go a long way.
He went to a beautiful country filled with nice people. If he acted that way in Florida, there would have been a different outcome.
As an American I apologize for this guys bad behavior. Thai people are some of the sweetest 🙏
First of all, telling someone to get TF out of the way is both aggressive and obviously rude. Then to yell at someone that they do not understand English is just asking to get into a confrontation. He is extremely lucky that he wasn't kicked up and down the train by the Thais. As a farang in Thailand I have been witnessing these aggorant little tourists for over 30 years. I have stepped in on many occasions in defence of the Thais, but I know very well that they can and will defend themselves.
Of course, it wasn't rude according to him. His family talks like that all the time.
The American guy is very ignorant, no matter what the circumstances here. I'm English and I'm embarrassed by some of my friends and other westerners out here in Thailand who use curse words every other word. You won't be able to educate them, unfortunately.
That boy should try talking like that to a man.
Maybe he woke up in the hospital.

That was super educational, you clearly have a good understanding of Thai culture and are able to bridge across to Western ways. I am very interested in the different Thai smiles (I think you said 'Yim...'), will look to see if you have any related uploads.
I don't speak Thai, have visited in the past and am due again, and I try to learn a few words and phrases and use Google to help a little more (The inflection pronouncing some Thai words is very difficult!). Language aside I would never dream of behaving like that in a country that was hosting me. It beggars belief that anyone would be so disrespectful.

BS asshole. He says britain in the tape and I am American and speak Thai and never had any problems with conflicts. The British are drunk fucks with bad teeth. Go back to your shitty little island and fourth rate power.
Oh, I have seen PLENTY of rude Brits in Thailand...
I must live in charmed circles. I lived in Phra Khanong for 6 years and have ridden the BTS hundreds of times and have never heard a harsh word spoken by anyone. I’ve never personally seen any conflict in Thailand with anyone though I read about it in the news. If you see space on the BTS it couldn’t be easier than to say excuse me and politely push your way onto the train.
Speaking actual English, not American English. If this guy said 'get the fuck outta the way' to someone in London.
He, would learn how to speak English in that exact second.
How so?
That guy doesn’t sound like he’s in his 60’s guy. More like in his 20’s.

Not true. I'm American and this guy is a total jerk regardless of what she did. You don't yell and swear at women in any culture.
@@JosephKelly-uj1zo You're right, that man really isn't friendly.
@@JosephKelly-uj1zo I'm an American guy too and completely agree. There is no excuse for how he was behaving. And the tone of his voice, the way he said "Shut the f up!" it totally unacceptable.
Were people blocking the entrance/ exit into the train? Would blocking doors be considered rude or unsafe? The guy was rude. The adversaries confronted him. They did NOT let him of the hook and went into for confrontion. They could have filed a police report instead. Using faul language is rude. Blocking entrance or exit doors can be dangerous. Its not possible to understand what is going on. Watching a videoclip. From another viewpoint things may appear different ❤
I need more t-shirts and mugs with your maps. Vowels, alphabet groups, tonal stuff.
And a shirt with polite sentences in Thai: I need somethink to drink, coffee, not too sweet, not too spicy, something to eat, bathroom, a hotel, tranportation by bus or taxi. So I can point on my shirt. At the beginning and ending nice greetings and a place with my name is... where I can stitch my name.
When I travel and somebody treats me objectively bad, I say something rude in my mother tongue while smiling. So I can ventilate and he thinks, I am polite. But I do this only, if I feel helpless.
When I am in contact with the police, I forget all my English 😉

The way he spoke is unacceptable anywhere, including Brooklyn. This guy is just an entitled obnoxious individual who shouldn’t travel anywhere.
I have no doubt that the way asians do things can be rude to westerners and vicer versa. I have been to Thailand 9 times and 17 countries many more than once. I can understand how you can take their side especially if you are living there. My cousin is living in Thailand 12 years and he seems rude when talking with other expats. But getting back to this incident, i don't know what is going on, but I hear him say you are not letting us/people on the train. Now taking his view, we in the west are taught it is manners/etiquette to make way for others or to give people space. And from personal experience I noticed that asians in general never do. We call that rude. So it comes down to different cultures. "He said she said",,, don't know if there is anything wrong, but for anybody to stand in a doorway, that is rude and down right pigish. And that is common in asia.
When in Rome, old boy,.....
In Thailand you respect your elders and help them where you can, you don't block the door to an elderly person, two wrongs don't make a right but this lady ain't innocent.
That’s why people should choose to live in places compatible with the customs and values they were brought up with. It doesn’t matter if a Thai person appears rude based on western culture when they’re in Thailand. Also it’s not what he said but how he said it. Could’ve said what he had to say without the f word and aggression. That’s not Brooklyn talk either because depending on who he says it to he would’ve gotten a busted lip.
Nobody said the American was wrong for telling the lady to move inside, but saying f word and shouting to people is considered very rude in Thailand, plus he was saying something like people don’t know English like why tf Thai people have to know English in Thailand? Is this racist? You annoy that people don’t move inside, just tell them normally, is it that hard to do? No excuse for being rude in the public especially in the place like Thailand that losing face is a big deal.
Common curtesy and basic knowledge of culture and customs, Not just Thailand, in every country that you are a guest in!!!
Like a lot of these incidents we only see half of it. It looks like they were both being rude and difficult. Obviously the man is being a disrespectful loser. However the women apparently blocked the door and instead of letting it go keeps continuing it and raising her voice. If it were 2 Thais going at it people would barely pay attention. It's an insignificant arguement between two people. It must happen 100s / 1000s times a day in Bangkok between people.
I don't think 2 Thais would go at it over this. It would be very different
Yeh for this in particular it would be an unlikely scenario. For the average 2 Thais having an argument in public though I really can't imagine anyone really caring this much. Let alone it becoming national news.
But your claiming the women were rude for blocking the entrance requires you taking his word over theirs. One of the women said the train is full. In that case, you just gently get in and find a space. I"m sure they did not have their hands spanning the width of the doors - literally preventing him from getting on the train. On crowded trains, you're not going to get on without bumping into someone a little, and that's normal. This guy is a jerk, plain and simple. He is the only one that we actually hear speaking rudely, yet we're supposed to take his word over theirs? The comments about language, and lying about saying "get the f out of the way" not being rude. Please, it's rude in any country, including the US. And I'm a man from the US. Stop making excuses and blaming others for his horrible behavior.
@@ayejay8862 I don't understand your logic. Have a nice day
@@kuntrasha Oh you don't? You don't understand there is absolutely no evidence that she blocked the door? You can't observe this guy's pathetic behavior and make a judge of character? What other simple realities are you completely incapable of perceiving?

Apparently you love to say it. In fact you've found a way to criticize Thai people in a video where a foreigner is berating Thai people in a completely unjustified manner.
