The American education system has always been severely flawed. The bar is set way too low & we reward incompetent people passing grades & diplomas. This was taught in elementary school. Some people even sooner than that.

If you think about it, Tukay has a point. How do you multiply a whole positive number and it doesn't multiply?
@@tyreed.pettis8528 multiplying one group of one item (1x1) will still result in both one group of something & one item in totality. For example, one wallet with one dollar is still one wallet total & one dollar total (1x1=1). Seven wallets with zero dollars will always be zero dollars (7x0=0). You cannot multiply nothing & end up with something. If you only have one of something, then there is nothing to multiply it with. That’s the easiest way I can explain it.

Multiplication is simply timing a number however many times (whatever that number is.)
For example: 10 x 10 = 100. How? If you had 10 sets, of 10’s and you were to count them up you would have a total of what? 100 (10’s.)
If you times a negative number however many times, you will get that negative number that many times. For example: -1 x 5 = -5? How? Because you have a negative number THAT many times(x)

There's no such thin in reality as a negative number. There is always something. The idea of a negative number is a recent, last few centuries, accounting and theoretical invention. Division is a different thing from "negative".

Multiplication at its core is based on groups!! The multiplication formula read aloud is:
The Multiplicand x The Multiplier = The Product.
The Multiplicand is the total number of objects in a group. The Multiplier is the number of equal groups. The Product is the result of multiplication of the Multiplier and the Multiplicand. Therefore,
Multiplicand = 5 objects in a group
Multiplier = 8 equal groups
Product = 8 equal groups of 5 objects per group, which is 40
Multiplicand: 1 object in a group
Multiplier: 1 equal group
Product: 1 equal group of 1 object per group, which is 1
Multiplicand: 0 objects in a group
Multiplier: 1 equal group
Product: 1 equal group of 0 objects per group, which is 0.
The other caveat with multiplication is that the objects in the groups have to have the same identity (yes, numbers have identities). I can’t multiply 8 equal groups of 5 cars per group, and get 40 cars if one of the objects in one of the groups is a plane and not a car.

I think we are so uneducated now that we look for simplicity in ALL complex things just so we feel less afraid of the unknown and feel more in control. The truth is that some things are just beyond our personal ability to comprehend. Some things can be broken down simply but others cannot. Math is a tool/language that allows us to describe and model things that we can percieve in our reality and some that we can only theorize. The working technology that you interact with everyday would absolutely not be possible if negative integer were not used. BUT if I am wrong start building bridges and skyscrapers in the real world based around the theory that 1x1=2, (give me a heads up also so I can avoid)
If you spend $5 every weekday over a 4 week period, then your bank account decreased by 5 over the course of 20 days. There are several methods to manually reach the sum total of what was spent. One of those ways is to multiple -5 by 20 which will equal -100 representing the amount your account decreased over that time period. You can also add or subtract to reach the same conclusion.
