    Great to see the shack stash growing - that "man cave" upstairs must be filling up nicely! I was in a similar position to you a few years ago, and bought a load of gear that I'm now slowly whittling down to the "keepers". It's often difficult to let stuff go, even if I've already decided it must - I usually make one last demo (which I post on here) before I part with the gear, and that usually makes me even more reluctant to part with it 🙂

    Hey Woody, it's great to see you having a good time with a splurge. I'm keen to hear your take on the SE-02 vs the Behringer Model D. I'm on my second SE-02. Through a Roland contact I had one of the first in the UK. After a while I sold it and instantly regretted it, so ended up getting an another. It has a massive analog sound. I know the Model D launched around the same time but I was never really tempted by that one. Bizarrely, the small size of the SE-02 was one of the major attractions for me, and the ability to store presets and stay in tune. It just sits there in my rack and does its thing, with no complaining. Anyhow, keep up the good work.

    You mention that Roland SE02 is the only analog Roland makes these days, but it actually isn't 😃 The kinda cheap JD-Xi which is still sold, while being mostly digital, actually has one monophonic analog part. Also it's big brother the JD-Xa (which I think is discontinued, although some stores still seem to have them in stock) has a 4-voice analog engine under the hood, which I think can be used either as one 4-voice synth part, or 4 monophonic ones ☺

    Well done for getting rid of the minulogue bass. The microfreak however is something I would never entertain due to the awful capacitive keyboard, I know you can use a master keyboard with it but it’s just not for me. The SE02 however has been on my radar for a while. The Behringer I have had for a few years and it’s great. I own 11 Behringer synths at the moment (model d, vp330, kobol expander, pro1, pro800, cat, crave, ms1, solina, vs mini and jt4000) and find them all to be high quality and great sounding.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  5 месяцев назад +1

      excellent insights thank you, good to read. the saving grace of the MF is the sequencer, the keyboard is good enough for programming that, is my plan.

    • @kentaccordionist
      @kentaccordionist 5 месяцев назад

      @@WoodyPianoShack they did make the mini freak which has a normal keyboard and better specs, although when I say normal keyboard it’s mini keys, but as a user of a dx100, and also Arturia keysteps, I can use mini keys. Doug Woods at the soundtest room did a great review of it. Another thing I dislike about the microfreak is it’s paraphonic and not polyphonic which is ok for string machines but in my opinion not good enough for normal synths. Anyway I look forward to seeing how you get on with it.

    Obviously, you're in the business of making RUclips clips, so it may make sense to get lots of items to review. But, if it was my money, I'd get one proper big workstation, like a used Kronos. This could replace everything that you bought and more. Add your Model D and maybe a Pro-800 or Deepmind 12 and you have analog covered as well. That's how I spent my own money.

      that is a very good choice too, and i've had that approach in the past. will be interesting to compare the pros and cons of a more modular setup.

      Yes you can, but when it comes to electronic music it's so much more fun to use many small synths and drum machines, with their own character and interface. 😃
      I myself do both things - I have a Nord Stage 3 compact and a Kurzweil PC4, a Yamaha CP88 (and some other older keyboard). For live use, this is the best way to go, but when jamming at home, it's so much more fun to play with smaller synths as well. I have a Roland D-05, with hardware editor in the same format, a Roland SE02, two Korg Volca drum machines, an Arturia drum machine, a Behringer Neutron and a Arturia Beatstep Pro (I use among other things to sequence the Neutron), the really odd Zoom ARQ AR-48, and probably something mor I've forgot about...
      You can always soundwise replace a lot of stuff with a workstation or a computer full of VST's, but it will never give you the sama playing experience.

      @@t-man78 Ok, if that works for you rhan great. But I get enormously frustrated when working wih short keyboards and limited polyphony. The more I do try it, the more I think that I need a professional instrument and not a toy. Even the physical experience of working with light, plasticky items like the Roland Boutiques annoys me and reminds me of how cheap the hardware that I'm trying to make music with is.
      Different strokes, but I'll go with capable professional gear every time.

      @@t-man78 Congrats on the PC4 by the way. People overlook Kurzweil, wich is a shame, because nothing else sounds like it. I recently upgraded from a PC3K8 to a K2700, which I love. And I still have a K2600rs

      Thanks, but actually the Kurzweil is my least favorite synth of the ones I have... it's so damn complicated to work with, in every way...
      When using it I tend to spend too much time programming and too little time playing. You can do many amazing things with a Kurzweil, and they sound great in many areas, especially orchestral stuff. V.A.S.T based Kurzweils certainly is not for everyone - it probably takes years and years to fully grasp and understand the V.A.S.T synth engine, so - it's perfect for sound designers, and those who need to do really complex things live, but for the average keyboard player I would not recommend a Kurzweil.
      It is really cool that they're still backwards compatible all the way back to the K2000 (which was released in 1991, right..?), but I would say that also is the problem - lots the programming feels very much like synths did in the late 90's... so no, not my cup of tea. I will probably replace it with a Yamaha MODX8+ within a year or so.
