  • And now for the correct video (filmed today)... sorry to those few of you who watched the video I put up earlier (it has been deleted), which was shot a few months ago when I was sick and it was not done well. I am not sure what the model # of this of this unit is, or when it was made exactly, but the record player was made in England and the rest of the unit was made in the USA. The video probably does not do justice to how great this record player sounds on undamaged records (that Sinatra box set turned out to be great).
    P.S. Yes I know the area around my desk is a mess, I am working on it.

    Thanks for making and posting this video. 👍👍I have the same model (1SC236R) but with a brown finish. Magnavox purchased Collaro in 1960, but you could find Collaro record players in many brands of phonographs, portable and console types, even some with the Collaro name on the phonograph or the complete system. In the heyday of record players/changers a large percentage of them were made in England. A lot of English workers lost their jobs with the decline in sales of record players. Very unlikely we will see record changers made again, so these things should be preserved and enjoyed for generations to come. Imagine what kids will think hundreds of years from now seeing and hearing this Magnavox. I hope you still have it.

      I do still have it yes. I have a few other portable record players, but this one is very easy to setup and works great. You are right that record changers seem to have disappeared from the market.

    Matt, your call, of course, but, heck, I'd keep that one. You know so much about radios, I forget sometimes that you are, relatively speaking, a young 'un. There was no '45 needle, per say, it's perfectly safe and accepted to play both 33 1/3 and 45 with the diamond cartridge. A scratched up Glenn Miller LP is better than no Glenn Miller at all, I say :-)

    • @50sTransistorRadios

      Interesting, that means that the 45 RPM record I played in the video is just junk... I am surprised someone tolerated listening to records that were so shot. It's good to know I can play my better 45s on this set.

      The correct model number is S600. That changer was made from 1962, till 1965. Then they made some minor changes, mainly the tone arm, and the model was in the 800 series. When Magnavox made that set,headphones were not invented yet. Headphones came out 1969-70.

    I remember when Reader's Digest marketed those "collections of the greats" - if memory serves, they were recorded from the "vault stored originals". The sound quality was said to be excellent, and many thanks for not letting Lawrence go for a spin!
    Ahh, what the hell, "that's a wunnerful record player", Matt, and a-one, and a-two, and a-three...... (You'd have to have been forced to listen to Lawrence on Saturday nights to understand that one. I remember my grandmother's and great-aunt's reactions to the dance numbers on the show, and my being forced to learn the Waltz in-between Dodge commercials. At least Jackie Gleason came on afterwards)

      I am listening to one the records in the Reader's Digest box set (which is very nicely packaged) right now, and while the sound quality is definitely high, I would rather be listening to the original recordings, not instrumental covers.

    Those Magnavox record changers are nice. I have Tube amplified Magnavox Console stereo that uses the same turntable deck. It's too bad some of those album covers have the price sticker across the performer's face.

      Magnavox did not make the record changer. The record changer is from England and was made by Collaro.

  • @Madness832
    @Madness832 9 лет назад

    I'm not a huge fan of record changers, but I even I have to admit that those Micromatics are pretty cool. In the way that the tonearm moves up & touches the edge of the record to determine its size. And also, have you ever seen the John Goodman movie, "Matinee?" If not, there's a scene in there where a couple of kids are listening to a Lenny Bruce record on a unit that looks very similar to yours (the film takes place during the Cuban Missile Crisis).

    • @50sTransistorRadios
      @50sTransistorRadios  9 лет назад +1

      I am not really a record collector either, but I do have a few transistorized record players to go with my transistor radios. I haven't seen that movie, but this model seems to have been fairly popular in it's day, so it makes sense that they would choose it.
