I’m so happy to see another camera company putting out a monochrome camera. I wish more companies would. I hopefully Fujifilm puts one out at some point.
Currently I work with the Leica Monochrom (typ 246). I love it. I really like the different approach towards photography when I’m working with a Monochrom camera. You really have to look different at your subjects. The IQ “even” at 24MP is stunning. That Pentax made this Monochrom camera is good new for photographers: because we now have another option for a b&w camera.
I used to shoot Pentax cameras back in the mid to late 80s. They were good cameras then and their lenses were every bit as good as any lens around, but they never really marketed themselves very well. I'm glad to see them coming out with this camera. I have a lot of respect for Pentax, although I shoot Canon now. I would never spend the unnecessary money on a Leica, which to me is a rich amateur's camera. A Leica body and one lens will set you back around $20,000 or more. Does that make sense? Hell no! Not to me as a professional photographer. Plus, their support is not great from everything I read and know. Do I want to spend that kind of money and send camera after camera back to Germany to get fixed or replaced? No. And I challenge anyone to show me the difference that a Leica image has that is so much better than an image from a non-Leica. If you have normal vision and were not born with a 50x microscope for an eye--can't be done, unless you shoot the non-Leica image with the worst lens in your arsenal. Kudos Pentax, I'm glad to see your innovative camera, I hope it sells super well.
BW PHOTOGRAPHY means imaging in greyscale in a colorful world, which is not easy. Awesome! An excellent job has been done thanks for sharing have a nice day.
I've seen all of the K-3 III M YT videos and yours is by far the best. You are so good with the people on the street and great discussion about camera gear with the older gentleman. Lastly, great tips and advice to photographers who may be be questioning the point of a monochrome only camera. Too many are influenced by spec sheets or shilling and they are losing out on the magic and satisfaction of the craft of photography itself. Cheers Niels!
The best review of all, Leica M11 monochrom (all serious fondling, like i was 12 again) and the Pentax K... Monochrome. Pentax gave you a very short time! The Leica came with Lemonade! I love my Pentax, still using them! Portrets was mos baaie lekker! Bravo!
That was somewhere in Amsterdam? It's pretty damn close to English - good way to learn it! You touch on the essential of community enthusiasm I miss so much from University where I was #1 lens for a couple of years. You can refine your technique a bit - plain people need a prop - something to add interest and texture. It can be "a practical" like a window, sign, foliage, kid, pet, etc. Or you can hand them a prop - a flower - almost anything. A comic, a film magazine - movie posters or works of art - you'd be surprised what you can create - starting with a story for them to be in. This camera - or maybe the Leica - thrills me with the prospect of using it for Video story telling. It's like a return home that you haven't seen in so long.
I ordered a Pentax K-3 iii monochrome today. I’m watching a lot of videos from professional photographers like yourself and am enjoying all of the different styles. I’m a skilled amateur. Your portraits are beautiful. One thing jumped out at me after the last portrait you took. Behind the bearded guy with the bicycle were two rows of bicycles. I could spend hours photographing them: the spokes, the wheels, the seats, the handlebars…. I love how two photographers can be in the same place and see totally different things! You made a great video. Thank you for making it.
Thanks for the review. You have a great style with your photographic subjects. I like the idea of having one of these cameras for sure. Will be interesting to see how the dynamic range and noise levels stack up against a regular K-3 III
great to see the kind, friendly and relaxed way to approach to people, very natural, good vibes very interesting camera, i do own a K3II and K-1, i love with the K-1
This is too cool really! I would love Fuji to also make a b&w camera, maybe the X-E or X-Pro series! ... but maybe I should also give Pentax another try, the last digital one I had was the K10D from around 2007 😅
IMO Fuji became the company I thought Pentax were going to become. Pentax seem to be heading for niche products like this camera and also the film camera they are goign to make. I Have a K3iii and just bought a fuji X-H2S. They are somewhat comparable IMO, but the Fuji has all the advantages of mirrorless with very little disadvantage based on my week of use so far. The K3iii in both colour and monochrome are great cameras... i'm just feeling like Pentax is neglecting a lot of other areas like fast rpimes, that fuji has by the truckload now. If Pentax went to a company like viltrox and came up with a deal to do k-mount versions of their lenses that would be amazing and help fill a gap.
Cool, Pentax! My very first serious camera was a Pentax K-1000, back in the film days. I mainly shot diapositives for slides, but occasionally also used black& white negatives. I like the streetportraits, you have a way with people. I think this camera is for die-hard (street, art) photographers only. 👍
It’s great that Pentax if beating the big three in coming out with a monochrome camera. For me I wish it was full frame. Also if they can clean up how they name their lens. It’s like an alphabet on the lens body.
As a Pentax K-S2 user, it's obvious I can't afford a camera more expensive than mid entry/upper mid entry Pentax bodies. That being said, I hope this monochrome camera delivers for those that want such a camera. I'd love to see some photos taken with this same camera with a color version that has been converted to b&w in camera or in photoshop/Gimp compared to the monochrome pics taken from this camera.
Looking forward to getting my hands on this camera. I have a q2m, and I love that camera. Does this one also have high iso capabilities like the Leica monochrom?
I don’t know how they compare. Never shot a Leica M. But the value for money you get in this camera truly is amazing! High ISO is good in the regular KIII, even better in the KIIIm.
I'm definitely interested. I really wish they'd do a GR mono (and Fujifilm should have done mono X100 variation, too). I'd love to see some high ISO examples like above 12800 to see dynamic range and grain feel.

Most of cameras can take B/W pictures if you turn the settings. Why not make k1 version for animal/sports photography? Something they do not offer yet.
"Leica killer ?" Well, I think Leica have their own killer for the M11 monochrom - the £8300 price tag. That puts it £1000 more than a Hasselblad X2D 100C. I'm finding it hard to believe the M11-M can outrun the 'blad in the image quality stakes.
Cool, except it's in pentax K mount, so you can't adapt anything to it like a mirrorless... so kinda useless for most people even if the concept is cool. Pentax needs to give up the ridiculous "SLRs are the future" nonsense, and I'd LOVE to buy a monochrome mirrorless from them. So that I can use my canon lenses, minolta lenses, etc.
"Emotional impact" etc. is a silly reason, when you can just turn a normal camera's photo black and white. ONLY the technical sharpness, low light ability, etc. matter here. "Dedication to the craft" rings the most hollow of all when you posted a video about it IN COLOR... didn't even have enough dedication to black and white to go one video without color, so I don't believe you on that one... I do think the sharpness and speed matter, and may be a good enough reason, but tell it like it is. Better yet would be if there was some way to make a Bayer filter that turned itself on and off (like an LCD screen pumping tone into a pixel and emptying it again, but the Bayer filter? I dunno if possible)
APSC is not worth it for iso gains you'd need full frame. On the Q2m 25000 looks like the 6400. I thought GR mono would be the one but APSC would have no benefit to the mono sensor here.
Ermm just put fast quality glass on any good DSLR and you got the same result when you covert raw to B/W. I recall the original ground breaking Nikon D1 had a physical B/W only setting on the camera, but of course it still had the Colour mosaic filter. I'm afraid that this is just the Pentax marketing team in full swing. If I shoot on a D850 with excellent glass and covert/compare the same shot with the K3III, nobody will be remotely able to tell the difference. Thats said, if the K3, inspires you to go out and shoot in B/W, then by all means, go for it.
Every image all the highlights are blown out. Not much of a dynamic range or poor shooting. How Much much of the views came here because you said the word Leica. Wonder if your video is good enough to generate views based on your information. Is there anything new said here that hasn’t been covered.
It’s an obvious comparison since Leica has most of the monochrome market. And my video got about the same views as other k3 monochrome reviews so if it was ‘just to get likes’ that would have failed 🤣 You should watch my video about envy and hate as well, you might get something out of it 🙏
I’m so happy to see another camera company putting out a monochrome camera. I wish more companies would. I hopefully Fujifilm puts one out at some point.

I'm not that impressed with the specs. It's nice to see a mono...but not this one. I'd modify my camera before I purchased this. Still nice to see.
Leica killer? Really.
And my video got about the same views as other k3 monochrome reviews so if it was ‘just to get likes’ that would have failed 🤣 You should watch my video about envy and hate as well, you might get something out of it 🙏
B&W dedicated APSC sensor? You're excited? What a waste of money... Sorry Niels
"it will last forever"....yet another cheap commercial that wants to sell itself as a review.
Thanks nerd 😂
