Lots of potential reasons for this, depending on the award and how it's displayed on the cover! Some scenarios: 1) the award being referenced is referring to the author, who has won it for another book 2) If a book has won an award early after its publication, that may be added to the cover for the next print run 3) Certain awards consider books before they reach publication, and the jury is reading advanced copies.
