    5 years late but I just got this keyboard and wanted to say thank you! Being an acousting piano player, keyboards are difficult for me to figure out and this one was a little intimidating until I saw your video. Now it all makes sense, and, yes, it is rather simply laid out. thank you.

    Excellent review! I own the instrument and you showed me a few things I did know. The best thing about the keyboard is that you don’t have to dive into different menus to make a change. Most of it is on top of the keyboard which is great in a live situation. Splitting the keyboard then assigning a key range is great! I have a patch with piano on the lower two thirds of the keyboard and horns on the top third. The horns are tuned to the middle octaves. Great for 50’s rock and jazz tunes! Great board!

    probably the best overall review I have seen on the RD 2000. Curious - this came out in 2017 (and I'm writing this in August 2023)... is Roland coming out with a newer unit? Seems like an old model at this point.

    Probably the best stage piano to date. I have the RD-800 and it does everything I need it to. The action is decent, not Grand Feel or Avant Grand but then it is a Stage Piano! It may take a few knocks on gigs and gigs pay my my bills!

    I always get a laugh when people critique the piano sound vs.. the 800, vs the Nx... given all those pianos are on the 2000.. but the action and functionality is much improved is where you need to keep the focus. I'll be using pianoteq and omnisphere through this bad boy, and still play around with all the Roland sounds for mixing around. Really.. it's like the best stage instrument out there for full software hardware integration. Yes Roland could invest in better piano designers but there are a million piano voices now on the market. But nothing as good as this instrument for playing them on... all things considered.. 8 zones? High rez midi.. second best keyaction to Kawai grand feels, but actually better for all around sounds, and way lighter for transport. Quit complaining people!

      Greg Wilson well said. Ive had the RD800, kurz pc3x, yamaha s90xs, motif xs8, and my rd2000 has the slickest integration with external midi, and I run MainStage with Omnisphere, Keyscape, Komplete 12, Applied Acoustics lounge lizzard, Ravescroft, Synthogy Ivory, Arturia V6 etc, and if get bored with soft synths, I can always tap into a Roland Integra midule, Yamaha Motix xs rack, and Muse Receptor. The RD2000 is a master cintroller and advanced KB. Only thing I would like is it being a little lighter, and today tried a new Yanaha Modx8, CP88, Kurz Forte, and even the new Komplete Kontrol 88 mk2. The rd2000 still shines. The only upgrade for my home studio might be a Kawai VPC1 but pricey with no sounds but great action. Second choice if money no object might be a Nird Stage 3, but I think rd2000 has an easier interface for live and external softsynth and module integration, including the audio over usb which is handy to integrate a laptop with mainstage.

But tell you the truth, I bought also the FP90x, which was practically destroyed during the shipping and I shipped it back today for a full refund. I wanted to try out which I like better. After months of tweaking a wealth of parameters trying to get a natural sounding piano I give up. This would be a great instrument to play on stage for a loud rock show where you have to be heard, but it sounds like plastic and steel rather than wood. The Rhodes is terrific, the drawbar organ is not convenient enough to really play. Good action, but only 3 stars out of 5, Roland, for the main event - PIANO

      I have the EXACT same problem/issue with the RD2000's predecessor, the RD-800. My understanding is that the two boards have similar Acoustic Piano voices. My RD-800 really sounds like crap even through good monitors. Like you, for months (actually over a year) I have tried to tweak every eq and other setting with hardly any improvement. I have reset the board to factory specs---shouldn't it sound very good at the defaults? But no, it sounds like a hundred dollar Casio. I am frustrated beyond measure and don't know if I will ever figure it out. I've asked many "experts" resulting in shoulder shrugs. If you ever figure it out will you let me know--and I will do the same. By the way, I agree the action is great as is the build quality fit and finish. It just sounds like poop.

      I just don't get your criticisms on this keyboard, you must be really really critical, you must be a pain in the ass to be around? It sounds wonderful to me with no apologies. What I have noticed about overly critical people is that they are self Self-aggrandizing anal propagandist of their own bullshit to make themselves feel superior in their observations that somehow no one else could perceive.....but it is all bullshit on your part.

      And I say more, XP and JV line pianos do not sound like an acoustic piano, but they sound better and have more weight (presence) than the last RDs (800 and 2000). Too bad, because the RD2000 has a very nice house. I still have not found a replacement for my JV-90.

    Does anyone know a set of good monitors or speakers to produce a real sounding piano sound? I've had this piano for a few years now, I love the action, love the way it sounds through headphones, but when I plug into a home theatre system or my KRK Rokit 5 monitors, it sounds warm and tinny and fake... It sounds like I'm listening to a recording of somebody playing the piano which superficially is okay at first, but when you're actually playing it just doesn't sound right and doesn't feel like you're really playing a piano. So I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with other amplifiers, monitors, or sound systems that sound properly realistic with this keyboard. For the record, I have a set of Sony MDR-7506 headphones which are pretty affordable (at least at the time when I bought them around $85, but it looks like with inflation now closer to $100) and I am very happy with the way my piano sounds through those.

    Please help. Should I buy Korg Kronos or a Roland RD2000. I’d be using the keyboard for live gigs as well as some studio work and song/film score composition. Spending that amount of money I want to make the right choice (I realise it’s subjective, I just would like your opinion. Thank you) PS: Ease of use is also a factor, plus, if you think there is a keyboard better than one of these 2 please share. Thanks again

    • @MarkKiambo
      @MarkKiambo 6 лет назад +2

      It depends on what the Keyboard is being used for mostly. If you will be gigging more than studio.. Take the RD2000. If you want to use it more in the studio (especially for sound synthesis, sampling, recording), then the Kronos is a better choice (and thus pay the extra cash for it). My only problem with the Kronos (and thus discourage it for gigs) is the touch-screen.. It is quite difficult to operate it in live gigs unless you had time to pre-program before the gig. The RD2000 in this case is far much easier.

    • @chentiangemalc
      @chentiangemalc 6 лет назад +1

      I have Kronos 2 61 key but will probably get the Roland RD2000 as a 2nd keyboard, as my ancient full sized keyboard I've been using to control the Kronos, Korg N1 finally bit the dust. My major problem with Korg Kronos is very slow boot time, very complex to configure (but amazing configurability). For live the Kronos is easy to pre-program set lists, and this feature is really well done, however if you haven't pre-programmed it, it can require a lot of .fiddling to get setup right. I like using the Kronos sequencer to quickly lay down some multitrack ideas without touching a computer.

    • @Armz316
      @Armz316 6 лет назад

      Go for Korg Kronos 2. Thanks.

    • @edwardc7462
      @edwardc7462 5 лет назад +1

      Nanakojo Adu The kronos is brilliant for creating with its sequencer and can’t be beaten in the studio for live use it has very good controls enabling you too adjust sounds while playing and with set lists you can put the sounds you want into lists and call them up with one touch, so the kronos is an all rounder the only drawback is you have to go through complex menus to set things up , The rd2000 Being a stage piano does not have a sequencer therefore limited in the studio but live it has great versatility as the presets are easily called up and can be put together to create different sounds and tones whilst playing and it also weighs les than the kronos and costs less than the Kronos.

I know the piano is still under warranty, but can't seem to find who I need to contact, I've tried going through Roland's website, but can't find what I'm looking for. I was hoping that because your based in the UK you maybe able to point me in the right direction. I believe the nord grand does have the kawai key action wich is the best on the market. But that comes with a hefty price. Almost double what this keyboard cost. Also the key action of this roland is their flagship so not too far behind about key action. The roland does have premium escapement action just like an acoustic piano.

      @@jennifersarantos9562 if you’re concerned about the keybed and action, I’d advice you try the Yamaha CP88. If you want the most features, go for a Nord Stage. If you want less features and just down for a red piano, go for the Nord Grand. With Roland it’s always been a lot of very usable sounds for a gigging setting for a better price than the Nords. In my honest opinion that’s not necessarily the BEST sounds, but who am I? Also interesting to throw in: Kord Grandstage and Korg SV2. Or Yamaha YC and Hammond SK Pro, if you’re interested in organ sounds.

If you are using it at home or in a studio, then you will require a good set of Studio Monitors which are designed for near field. If you are planning on using it to perform live, then you will need either keyboard amplifier, or PA system. Obviously the larger the speaker, the better the sound quality without having to have it at full volume. Pop into our Eastbourne store (BN21 3JN) or give us a call for more info (01323 639335).

      Thanks for the reply, I dont plan to use it on any performances, just at home for practicing and learning new classic pieces. The only problem is that I used to live here in UK with my Aunt, but now I live in Australia. Ive been here for 2 years. I will be returning to UK in 2019. So, can you give me a suggestion about some good studio monitors?

    Personally, I think the Kurzweil digital stage pianos sound even better than a RD2000.

    UNETHICAL!!! I have owned several Roland keys throughout my career. RD500. RD600, several of RD700 series, and I currently owe 2 RD 2000s; several Fantoms, a Jupiter X, several VKs and a VR. I specifically leave one RD2000 in south america so I dont have to carry it back and forth to the US. Before Christmas, I've paid for the German Concert Expansion, and I was very pleased with it! The problem, in my case, is that you cannot upgrade your RD 2000 that had already been upgraded with the German EXP unless you pay for another 200 dollars upgrade that includes the same German Piano EXP but not the Upright EXP. With that, Roland, abandons old faithfull customers like me, by devalueing their own products in an enethical way! Not cool!!!

    I was ready ro plunk down $2600 for the RD2000 but I lucked out at Guitar Center because they actually had one on display for me to try out... No Way... I own a 18 year old P90 Yamaha with the graded hammer effect keybed and its WAY better than the Roland's bouncy, fake wood grain keys. That display saved me the agrivation of having to return one.

    Great video like always. The design and philosophy of Roland is very well thought, but the piano sounds are not good enough. It cannot compare with Kawai MP7/11SE, Nord or the new Yamaha CP88. It just sounds cheap and thin.

    it is better than montage 8 or korg Kronos

      It depends on what you are looking for. This is a stage piano.. made for use by gigging musicians, and therefore much cheaper than the Montage or Kronos. The Montage/Kronos, while they have features to aid a gigging musician on stage, are much more powerful in sound synthesis and studio work; and thus are priced much higher. Purchasing a Montage/Kronos just to use their on-board sounds is wasting the extra money - you'd rather stick with the RD2000. However, the RD2000 does not have a sequencer, so if this is a feature you need, then the RD2000 is not your instrument.

      Mark Kiambo glad this doesn't have a sequencer so it's going to be a Korg Kronos 2 88 keys for me then.

    I would, not recommend the RD2000 digital piano to anyone. the piano and organ sounds are very fake.

      Nope. The RD-800 pianos are all in the RD-2000.
