I rescued 4 large stag horn balls from a tear down at a construction site. They are now 7 ft., 6 ft., 6 ft, and 5 ft. in radius, and almost thrive on benign neglect. I spray them in the fall after the very dry santa an a winds dry them out, (the winds that cause all the fires in California.) That’s it! They’re hanging under trees, so they get both shade and sun. Gorgeous and so easy!
I inherited the one that my parents had my entire life. My mother got it when I was about 7 or 8 years old. That plant (which we call Big Boy) is about 4 feet in diameter with just the root ball and probably 6 ft with the leaves protruding out. My great aunt pulled it off her chain link fence in Miami Springs and brought it to Texas with her, and when she decided to move back to Florida she gave it to Mom. That was almost 60 years ago. We love Big Boy and we’ve never seen one as big as he is. ❤
First off... GORGEOUS! Second... thank you so much for sharing!❤ I'm doing a bit of research before i bring a staghorm into our plant family. I saw my first staghorn a few months ago at a nursery and was INSTANTLY in love.🥰
I have three and they are about 30 years old.Two are that size and one is about twice that size.I can not think about moving them.I just had to replace the cable and hang them with chain.Yes they love banana peels for some nutrients they get out of them. They are like a giant sponge and take gallons of water when they get this big.I do have to cover them with blankets when it gets cold like frost.I made a rack with 4 by 4s kind of like a swing set and they hang where a swing would go.For that matter a old swing set would work too.Just put a eye for it to clip on and off.
I wish I had watched this 25 minutes ago before I wrapped mine in sheet moss and tied it! I’ll have to get another one to try in a wire basket! What a gorgeous plant you have there!
Love It...I finally came across one and I’m searching for tips ! I also have all types of plants....I’m A Plant Hoarder💚I have a 13’Umbrella Plant in my living room,I too have high ceilings.Drives my hub nuts that I have plants everywhere😆Thank you for sharing !
I use fish tank water on mine it was almost dead got it on clearance at Lowe's was just one leaf and now she's needing a new pot after 3 months watering every other week lightly.your stag horn is gorgeous!
Hello from Florida. Your Stag is an absolutely beauty. I love how the sun hits her just right. I can not wait for mine to get so big However mine is fairly new.
Beautiful plant. I just bought one and mounted it on a cedar board last week. The other one I bought is still in a pot until I decide what to do with it. Thank you for sharing your amazing fern!
Your staghorn is gorgeous. Thank you for the video. I care for mine by throwing banana peels into it about 6 times a year. Other than that, here in Florida it is humid and only gets rain. My husband made a stainless steel ball 48" in diameter for my staghorn fern to hang on a very large avocado tree. He owned a welding shop at the time. 8 years later we moved and it was too large and too heavy to move so we left it for the new owner. Today I wish I had it back as my stag horn is about 2 feet in diameter, not including the leaves but it does hang under a large oak tree. I have a few brown spots as well. The frame you welded is a great design. Thanks for the closeup of that. My husband is contemplating building a new frame. Good to know you were putting one basket inside a larger one. I think we'll use that idea.
Wow... I know everyone thinks yours is big... but it’s maybe 1/3 the size of my moms. Hers is so big that the center mass is about 6 feet around without the leaves. The hurricane knocked her maple down where it was hanging and let me tell you... it took 6 very strong guys to drag it... yep I said drag... there was no way to lift it. It is just too big. Then we had to hoist chain into an oak tree and using a pulley system and all 6 people we got it hung again. And believe it or not... we have my grandmothers original staghorn that we took my moms as a baby from it’s about 78 yrs old now. I’m supposed to inherit this plant .... Problem with these guys is they do get SO big and you really need to be able to hang them and well I have nowhere to put it.
Great story thanks for sharing. My neighbours have a very large 40 year old one their mum gave one of them, these are very special plants that appear to 'bring people together in conversation & sharing". I love them. About to mount my first large one that came out of a very old big Grass Tree in Australia up in the mountains that a wind blew down.
It's 2 years later and maybe you did but why not propagate to others an keep only the best parts in the family? You'll need a proper handsaw though, lol. Also a clear vision how to do it. Fantastic, giant Staghorn. Good luck!
Interesting video on your Stag horn and what little you need to do to care for it! Your shadow looks so comfortable snoozing there enjoying the sunshine 💕💕
I work at a garden centre and we had good sized ones of these in a while back and no one bought them, they were reduced down to pennies to clear but I just don’t have the room 😭 I agree, beautiful plants...thanks for sharing!
rick, your stag is magnificent. it’s no wonder... it probably senses how much you care for it. i adopted an elkhorn early this year, and then a staghorn which grew enough in the first 6 weeks that i could mount it on a board. and now he’s spreading out. the elk horn too, growing upright in soil. they have their own purposeful characters which i truly enjoy! love all your posts... i have 11 beautiful orchids which are doing so well... you inspired me to do the calmag feedings... what happy plants! cheers....
At the end when you said any plant, i think the time was at 4 min and 50 sec.it keeps you wanting to care for somethin ect. I had never thought of it that way, you are a very wise man, and thank you, i have 2 baby ones, they are awesome, and so is your dog at the window taking a break..take care..
Your beautiful dog 🐕 loves your calming voice. I am learning how to talk soft like you, so my plants can be pretty like yours. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Rick, I loved your dialogue on your staghorn fern. I’m hooked on caring for mine. Now, as Winter approaches, I’m trying to find the right spot in our living room that gives it the right light. I found that in the summer /autumn months the window sills were too bright. I agree with your comment in that it is good to care for things other than self🙏 Thank you!
What a magnificent plant! My grandma had one for years and years and it got to be so huge. I just bought one but I may be in over my head because I live in an apartment... haha I hope I can hang it somehow with something sturdy. This was a great video and your dog is adorable!
We bought a staghorn in our first year of marriage, 1978, not knowing much about it. It is now huge, and I am not sure what to do with it. The hanging basket seems like a good choice, so wish me luck!
I love this video thank you for all the pro tips. I got one with big leaves in a 4 inch pot with soil at my local nursery for $3.50. I'm planning on mounting it on something with sphagnum moss when it's pretty acclimated in my room. If you have other tips on how to give this precious staghorn fern the optimal care please swing it my way!
I place mine in wire baskets with a coco liner, I added some bark and potting soil mixed together......it grows over the baskets pretty quick.........mine has 6-7 baskets inside it....lots of sun and water when growing...
He or she needs a name... I still chuckle as I have had people help me move rocks...my specimen collection...but nothing this big...Amazing yet scary it is SO HUGE....awesome and massive...
Oh my, what a majestic fellow you've got there! Mine is about a meter wide and i feel like a proud fern mom, can't wait till it starts eating up baskets and breaking the ceiling :D
Spots could be Cercospora fungus. Common spots on Orchid leaves and most garden trees. I have seen Staghorns in the Wattagans forests Australia so big in tree crown possible size of small car. Extremely heavy. You don't want to hang around under these. That is the only reason I never wanted to grow Staghorne/Elkhornes. Great plant you have there.
Dont know if this is a silly question but how can i make it grow more leaves and becomes big eventually? Mine stopped growing for a year now! It has only one that has a brown bottom leaf
Amazing! You advice putting three young ones in a hanging basket… what positioning would you do for initial placement. Just on the top or along the side so they are hanging?
What part of the country do you live in. Been watching a bunch of videos on stag horns most are in humid areas. I am in the desert and worry about only watering once a month with the dry very hot weather. What a beautiful plant.
I have been on the fence about getting one. Because as I get old it will be getting big. Still I think am going to get one anyway. If it gets to be to much I can always sell it.
Hey I have just bought one from the store. I’ve put it right next to a east facing window. It’s in plastic pot. Any tips on what I should be doing? Beginner here
....lots of light....not direct.....let it dry ...then soak it......then let it dry....and soak it......air flow help as as well....then stand back...they get big fast....
Had a friend in Key West that had one of these hanging in his garden outside. Once a year he would throw a bunch of bananas up on top to use for fertilizer. It was seriously gigantic.

Thank you for sharing. I have a staghorn that I got from an area nursery back in the spring and it’s not looking the healthiest. It’s in a pot of dirt. I do have a metal basket with a coco liner like you have in the window. I wonder if it would do better like that.
