Eve plumb had said in interviews that the sliding doors onto the patio didn’t have glass in them so as not to reflect the camera lights . At the start of s3 ep18, the big bet, Bobby slides the door closed quickly and the curtain swings thru , outside of the door frame . I was terribly excited to just witness this ...;)

I love this so much! I am binge watching my autographed series from barry williams I got for mothers day and I wanted to see the layout of the house. I did a search and found you! Thank You! I have wanted to recreate this home in the sims.
I was very obsessed with their house as a child. The furniture was the same as all my neighbors in the early 70s, but the architectural sense was beyond anything I would encounter in my little old California tract home environment. I wanted to be on that show so badly but I was way too young. Finally got my chance 30 years later--I was an extra in "Growing Up Brady."
What a fun story! I'm working on Part 2 of Bewitched right now, where we'll go upstairs and to the backyard. Then it's onto the original Parent Trap ranch house that I started awhile back. That was my show growing up in the '70s for me. It will never go out of style. My kids now look at it and my grandchildren look at it. What an all-time favorite, classic

I thank you for all your computer recreations of this house and all the other iconic sitcom houses. It takes a great deal of research and you uncovered details I took for granted.
When I was in HS Architectural Drafting class in the mid-80s I drew the blueprints of the Brady House from memory as a project. I remember the attic room conundrum and it was obvious the exterior did not work with the interior. Years later, it’s so cool to see it modeled and to see how my assessments were spot on with yours.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Nice job Marina! This is something several of us may have had the idea cross our minds to do, yet let it go as a fleeting thought. You actually did it! I like how you compared the interior and exterior to create the house. Very cool stuff!
Growing up in the generation that watched the Brady Bunch it makes me so sad that kids from 1980 forward didn't have this stuff to watch as it was made. It was reruns. So many great shows were made in the 60's and 70's (a lot of trash too!) that I feel so blessed to have been able to watch (we even had a color TV!). Kids today are being fed so much trash. Thanks for the walk through memory lane.

Boy The Den was so amazing. So much action took place in there. Greg getting Mike to sign his Homework Paper when he flunked a Math Test because he was in love with his teacher, Jan getting encouraged about living in Marcia's Shadow and how hard it was sometimes, Bobby talking Man To Man about Kissing Girls, Peter getting advice about working at The Bike Shop, Mike staying up all night to redo a Architectural Plan that Greg Lost, and having Alice remind him about getting Greg a Second Chance. Also Peter confessing he was listening to Private Conversations. Also in Year One Mike had a Typewriter and he talked about getting it fixed like Alice never got hers fixed.
This was so fun! I thought I was the only one obsessed with houses. I loved the Brady Bunch home - it was so spacious and modern, but with a touch of whimsy. And because it was the setting for this "perfect family" that was so the source of so much merriment. Thanks for this!

Growing up as a city kid in the 1970s, I watched syndicated reruns of the brady bunch every day in the afternoons. It was easily my number one favorite tv show. I was dirt poor and we lived in a crummy, run down, cockroach infested 2 family apartment house. I envied the bradys house. How I truly wished I could live in such a house! They had wall to wall carpeting. We didn't have any carpeting at all. They had a fireplace. We didn't. They had a family room, a den, and a laundry room. We didnt. They had an upstairs for their bedrooms which provided better privacy for the bedroom area. They had a backyard with a swing set in which to play in at their leisure whenever they liked. I never had access to the tiny backyard behind the apartment buildings I lived in because I didn't live on the first floor and/or the landlord forbid me from going back there. If I wanted to play on swings, slides, or a see saw, I had to go to a public park which was a far walking distance from my place and i had to cross over at least a couple of large, busy highways to get there as well. Since I saw every single episode countless times over already, many was the time that instead of paying attention to what the brady characters were doing and saying, I'd be looking past them, over their shoulders or around them, admiring their surroundings, their house and furnishings. Don't get me wrong. I had no illusions. I was well aware that the brady house wasn't a real home. Just a fake set inside a sound stage. But still, how I aspired to have such a home, or anything like it, in the suburbs to call my own!
"Mannix" fan here. The BB house interior set was prominently displayed in 2 episodes of "Mannix": "The Ragged Edge" and "Who Is Sylvia?" It was very interesting to see what the set designers tweaked (and what they left *completely* the same).

I would love to see you do the Golden Girls home. I can remember even as a young girl watching with my grandma, it would always bug me how obvious the outside and interior layout don’t match. I was always trying to make it all work in my head, since at the time (as a child) I didn’t realize they used sets and the exterior was just a shot of an actual home.
Ashley - When and If Marina does the GG House she will be doing a magic act! That set is crazy and It ALWAYS drove me nuts. Set aside that the Exterior can't and would never ever match the interior! Because The Lyni (patio) would be on the front lawn. The Hallway to the Bedrooms is at an angle. Putting all the bedrooms in strange places. Dorothy's Bedroom would actually be in that weird space behind the living room Blanches Room would take up most of Dorothys and Roses Room Where the heck is Sofias Room? Where the Heck is the Bathrooom, All of those rooms are over sized, They have living room sets in thier bedrooms. That Bathroom is bigger than the ones in Mc Mansions. I swear the kitchen is reused from Maude... Having a very very odd shape. What is that space behind the living room? It has a fireplace and seating but never was anyone over. It kinda looks like an indoor pavilion. What drives me crazy the most is the fact that they come and go to the garage through what should be a pantry. But if we go with the other side of the wall this is where the magical Sofia's bedroom and the Bathroom might be. The garage would not be in the middle of the house! My only explaination is that this house might be like the Tardis in Doctor Who....."it's Bigger on the inside" Crazy space dimension effects going on here.
One of my all time favorite shows when I was growing up!!! I wasn't as observant as a kid as I am now and Im blown away by the area beside the stairs...I never ever noticed that!!!! And if there was a bathroom back there....how cool!!!!

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I am very much looking forward to the Partridge Family home! I actually created that house (or at least my impression of what I THINK that house might look like) in a video game called the Sims. Besides the obvious limitations of the game, I thought it looked pretty cool. Will be interesting to see how yours compares to what I came up with. PS: I am so glad that I randomly came across this gem of a channel. I have a feeling I am going to be spending a lot of time here looking around. Thanks so much for bringing this content to us.
@@NJP76 Thank you! So, when you made it for SIMS, did you watch the show, pause it, rewind, etc to figure out the layout, or was it mostly from memory?
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Warning: Long comment to follow. A little of both actually. I purchased most of the series DVDs when they came out. So I was able to rewatch the original shows. Before the DVD's came out, I always tried to draw it out from memory. Some ideas were way off-base, but some were surprisingly close. Sadly, all of those old drawings have been lost over the years. Those DVD's are in storage currently, so anything I come up with today will be mostly from memory. That said, I must admit that I do occasionally sneak in a view of Partridge Family videos on YT. Problem with that is that I usually end up binge watching PF videos, LOL. When the Sims game came out, I thought it would be really cool to recreate that house in game. The original Sims game was really cool in that you could create a home and "live" in it vicariously. Cool as it was, the game had a lot of limitations as to actual home design. Through the years, there have been several new versions of the game released. Now with Sims 4, the home designing aspects have made huge leaps over the original game. There are still limitations, but I can usually get pretty close to what I am visualizing. Other iconic houses I have recreated in Sims games include: The Shady Rest Hotel; Jed Clampett's old cabin; Archie Bunker's house; The Douglas house/farm (Green Acres), among a few others. Fun times!

No need to be rich. The bewitched house appears about average sized and the floor plan is on line somewhere. The pull out frigidaire stove would be hard to find, but I've seen them on eBay. Getting it restored would be tricky but with enough $ anything can be done. The interesting thing about copyright law is that before 1990 houses couldn't be copyrighted, only the blueprints could. And since it was never actually a house just a soundstage I think you would be legal. I wonder if it's been done yet. Someone actually duplicated the UP house.

I always assumed that hallway under the stairs led back to Alice's living quarters and/or a laundry room. I do remember seeing Alice come out of there once or twice.
@@JarOfRats Yep, and I now question whether it was just a hallway leading to a bathroom. Since I've seen Alice come out of there, I question why she would use that bathroom when she has her own private one off her bedroom.
@@seattlesix6 That's true. Let's compromise: It was a hallway leading to Alice's area, with a bathroom in the hallway. After all, when you think of it, there SHOULD be a bathroom there. There were no other bathrooms on that floor, and it would be convenient to have at least a powder room for guests to use, rather than having to go upstairs to use the kids' bathroom.

You're awesome! How many of us over the years including the cast I would imagine, often thought how their home would actually look like if it was a real home. So probably not a lot of people know this next one. I'm a fan of the TV series Mannix that starred Mike Conners and on the series Robert Reed played a detective. A few of the episodes used the Brady Bunch home for various scenes in those episodes. I was shocked the first time I saw this as I had no idea this set was ever used for another show. I haven't checked the dates but I have wondered if this set was being used at the same time the Brady Bunch was being filmed and if so, how odd it must have been for Robert Reed to play two different characters in the same house.

The Brady's had a super cool house. I think the stairs are what really set it apart. I also think what sets this video series apart from 99% of others regardless of subject is the narrative demeanor and voice that hooks you like a fish and before you know it, you're mounted on the wall.

Great job on this! I knew from the time I saw this show, at least by the time I was in college by the 1980s, that the indoor sets didn't match the outdoor appearance of the house. Sets for tv shows rarely match houses where they're set. BEWITCHED came pretty close, but even it had some inconsistencies between house & set. I never thought of there being a wall where the Brady tv set was in the living room, but there had to be a wall somewhere. In "The Slumber Caper", which you mentioned during this video, Greg, Peter & Bobby, dressed as ghosts to scare the girls at their slumber party, walk through the kitchen and then enter the living room from behind the stairs, so there's definitely a hallway back there connecting to the kitchen. Now when I see that couch in Mike's den, I remember it as the place where Jan was sitting when she delivered probably her most famous line in the entire series: "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!" in the episode "Her Sister's Shadow". When you were asking about the order in which the Brady kids sat at the dining room table, I figured it was sort of a trick question, since they never seemed to sit in the same place episode to episode. I also never thought of a wall being behind the table, since that's where the sliding glass door to the backyard would be, but there was that hutch/china cabinet at times.

What a pleasant surprise when this popped up today. Growing up in the late 60s and 70s I always wished to tour these tv homes. I’m glad you addressed the exterior differences. Several shows have similar issues and even as a kid it would bother me. Don’t get me started on the never seen front room on The Munsters!
Guess which home I'm doing next? The Munsters. And this weekend I got to tour it and even went inside took pictures out the window - guess which home is across the road from it at Universal Studios? Leave it to Beaver. Quite a contrast. And, since you mentioned the exterior differences, I think you might like this post from my website where I show what the Brady home would look like on the outside, if it matched what was going on inside as we were shown on TV. It's called "House of Lies", but it's tongue-in-cheek. I love the Brady home. www.mockingbirdlane.design/post/the-brady-home-a-house-of-lies

I think the saving grace and main element that enabled the Brady house renovation to become reality were those double front doors! The placement and replication of the front doors from the real house onto the set made it all come into play very nicely. The soundstage set was allegedly already built before the Carson home (as it was known as in 1969) was chosen by Sherwood Schwartz to portray the exterior of the Brady's home. Therefore, modifications had to be implemented on both the set and the Carson house to bring the two separate entities into somewhat compatible alignment. The double front doors and entryway were added to the front of the set, then a false window was added to the upper A frame section of the house to give it the illusion of being a two story, of which we all know was pretty much useless since the staircase of the set is nowhere near that section of the house. A patch of material to mimic the wood siding was also installed over the window to the right of the double front doors since no corresponding window appeared on the Brady set. Now, for the big IFS! IF the set designers would have built a small staircase on the right side of the entryway indicating that it led to the master bedroom on the upper level like in the real house, and IF the master bedroom had never been located up the big staircase on the second story adjacent to the kids' bedrooms, we would have NEVER been struggling for these past five decades trying to determine how that set floorplan fit in the interior of that house located at 11222 Dilling Street in Studio City! Since we never saw the back of the real house, we could have easily assumed that there was a two story wing back there all along. The mystery would have never been a mystery, and the renovation to recreate the Brady interior in the real house would have been much more comprehensible.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Like everyone else who has studied the Brady residence, I struggled for years trying to accept a feasible explanation as to why the upper level A frame section was never a functional part of the Brady home. We all knew it was there on the real house but its interior was never seen as it did not have an inside entrance from the rest of the Brady's set. It does, however, have an external private entrance on the side of the house. You can see the steps leading up to it from the driveway in one of the original establishing shots if you look really close. So, in my head, I imagined that Mike Brady, being first and foremost a family man, yet also being a trained architect by profession, designed his house to accomodate his family, and then, with forethought of a possibly growing family should he and the new Mrs. Brady have additional children of their own, built the house with an extra spare section to possibly be used as extra living space in the future. Also, the attic section of the A frame was where I imagined Greg's bedroom to be all along, even though it was always kind of fuzzy as to how he entered that attic through the door in the main hallway of the rear upstairs wing. As for the never seen interior of that upper level A frame, you could use your imagination as to how it was laid out, including being used as a master bedroom complete with terrace and private entrance from the driveway. The A frame also has living space BELOW it. Should the Bradys ever decide to use their built-in extra living space, Mike designed the house with MODULARITY to accommodate entrances from the main house. The wall in the foyer could be taken down with a door and small staircase added to access the upper level and another staircase beside it to access the lower level, just as they appeared in the real house before it was remodeled. Plan B would have relocated the entry door of those sections to the dining room, as it was done in the recent HGTV renovation. Mr. Brady, being the savvy architectural wizard that he was, designed his house for a multitude of possible re-uses in the future, all being capably reconstructed without changing the overall look of the exterior facade. Another idea that Mr. Brady also possibly had in mind for the future, and most likely the far future, was retaining the A frame section as a separate self contained unit to rent out as a separate residence (and remember-with its own private outside entrance) to a single person or a couple, maybe even to one of their own children. This concept would provide Mr. and Mrs. Brady with extra income in their retirement! So, since we never saw that section of the house and the Bradys never lived in it, I have deduced all along that Mike Brady built his house as a DUPLEX that could either remain a duplex or be integrated into extra living space for the rest of the house depending on the circumstances of any given era!

I don't know if you're aware, but this set was also used at least once in the series "Mannix". Robert Reed also had a recurring role on that series and the two overlapped. In that series the downstairs was used as a bar, but the iconic staircase was there which gave the bar a strange layout. I wonder if Robert Reed had anything to do with that set eventually becoming the "Brady House" since he also worked on Mannix? Just a bit of trivia for you!

The hallway behind the stairs also led to Alices bedroom and laundry room. You can see this from the episode where the Brady’s are going to sell the house and the kids dress up as ghosts. They use the hallway and pass Alice’s bedroom. I think most people realized that the inside of the house did not match the outside.
I just watched 2 episodes yesterday where there was a clear shot of that hallway and there is no door on the left. But, as you pointed out there are times in the episodes where there HAD to be one there. I guess there was a magical disappearing door sometimes. Your way makes more sense. In a real house, I'm sure there would be a door there.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane In The Brady Bunch Movie, Alice came creeping out of that hallway wearing lingerie at night, as if she had just exited her bedroom. The kids were up and about near the staircase and she quickly turned around and scooted back down the hallway.
The ghost episode shows the kids creeping by Alice’s bedroom and coming out through the kitchen. So the hallway behind the stairs has to lead to Alices’s bedroom the laundry room and then the kitchen.
I love those stairs and that planter box. They should bring that back in homes. It seems like people tried interesting new things in interiors in this era.

Excellent video. I always thought the hallway behind the stairs led to Alice's room and bathroom. After a long day of taking care of the household, she would want a private room & bath away from the busy parts of the home. Thank you for sharing your talent.
To me the most mysterious aspect of the Brady house was Alice's room off of the kitchen. In some episodes you can see a laundry basket hanging on the wall in there but in another episode they show Alice in there getting ready for bed. I think it was in the Dear Libby episode.

I love every television show and movie that you talk about and I also love the homes. I never realized how they did all of this beautiful cinematography until you explained it. The houses were almost like another character in themselves.
@@robbibroadhead678 Love that movie and, of course the set design. Sometimes I have trouble following the plot of movies because the set design is so amazing that my focus is on taking it all in.
Ok, finally explained. While growing up, watching the Brady bunch, I have always tried to mentally picture the layout of the house, and getting perplexed as to how the rooms were around the house was laid out and connected. Now, I know that , it was impossible with the design of the outside of the house to match the inside of the house. The house would of been longer front to back , and skinnier left to right, which would of been the opposite of a house being long left to right. I believe in my childhood, thar after watching for years realized the discrepancies and that it looked like things did not match up. Great video, thank you, and have a good day. All questions about the geometry of the interior to the exterior answered, which is an empty set, no answer would of been correct.
The actor who played Sam would later go on to play Archie Bunker's buddy on All In the Family and Archie Bunker's Place. IIRC, prior to The Brady Bunch, he appeared on McHale's Navy.
@@kevinnelson66 Every time I see "Sam" on the Brady Bunch, I can't help but "see" Barney Hefner, LOL. I seem to remember him (this actor) doing several cameo appearances as different characters in the 70's and even into the 80's. But to me, he will always be Barney Hefner.

I can't believe Mrs. Brady would leave that whole part of the wall empty! That wall could have had a couple of small pictures or possibly some Brady family portraits, pictures of the kids, a starburst clock, a vintage banjo barometer (popular in many 60's TV living rooms), another large picture or even a small curio shelf with a plant or a vase to get rid of the empty space. Not mentioned in this video is that the real house in North Hollywood is a single-story ranch. Yet on the show, it's two stories on the inside, plus an attic big enough to turn into a third story. In the exterior shots, they put a fake window on the left-hand side that's not there on the real house (unless they added one during the recent model) to make the house look bigger than it really is. I think they also occasionally parked a toy car in front to make the house look bigger.

Probably my favorite TV home of all time. Who doesn't love that floating set of stairs? If I had the money to build my dream house, it would be this one. But I wouldn't put it where the real house is. I think I'd want to step out through the front door and look down a hillside at one of those stereotypical California landscapes, basically the view E.T. saw just before he got left behind. For that matter, I'd want the redwood forests near Elliott's house to be behind the backyard. Elliott lived in a nice neighborhood, but had a forgettable house.
Sounds ideal! Hopefully you saw parts 2 and 3, where we tour the rest of the house and backyard. You can see those and all of the other TV and movie home tours I've made here: ruclips.net/user/MarinaCoavideos?view_as=subscriber
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I intend to, just haven't had time yet. One thing: you were wondering whether the living room, kitchen and family room were sunken. No, they're not. If you recall, there are two steps outside leading up to the front door, so the truth is the entryway is elevated two steps above ground level while the stair landing is three steps up then three back down to the den. Aside from those two features, everything else is ground level.

Eve plumb had said in interviews that the sliding doors onto the patio didn’t have glass in them so as not to reflect the camera lights .

What a walk down memory lane, wonderful and done without blasting music, thank you so very much for sharing this video with us .
Hahaha! "blasting music." I wanted to be able to use the Brady Bunch music soooo bad, but knew the rights to that were not going to happen.

I recently saw an episode of Mannix that included the Brady Bunch home. It show most of the main floor and the back yard with the 3 doorwalls.
Thanks for sharing that. I hope you enjoyed this tour of the home.
"Mannix" fan here. The BB house interior set was prominently displayed in 2 episodes of "Mannix": "The Ragged Edge" and "Who Is Sylvia?" It was very interesting to see what the set designers tweaked (and what they left *completely* the same).
YEP ive seen photos. pretty cool

I used to do that all the time too 😊
GG isn't currently on my list. I have a long list, but maybe sometime in the future.
Dorothy's Bedroom would actually be in that weird space behind the living room
Blanches Room would take up most of Dorothys and Roses Room
Where the heck is Sofias Room?
Where the Heck is the Bathrooom,
All of those rooms are over sized, They have living room sets in thier bedrooms.
I didn't notice it as a kid either.

Fun times!
I love the sound of the footprints!
Oh good. I gotta admit I had fun adding those. It seemed Brady like. Their music track on the show had some funky stuff going on sometimes.

I was invited to a Christmas pageant at Dixie Canyon one year. When I walked into the auditorium, who-o-o-ah -- dé jà vu! But what was it? I had certainly never been there before. Its amazing how you can recreate these buildings. It really feels to scale and get the sense of being in it.👍
Watching the show, I never even noticed all of the brick and stone. Seeing all of the different views, it's easier to appreciate just how lovely this interior was. Greg's "groovy" room (aka Mike's den) was just like some of our college freshman dorm rooms!
It is such a cool home. And it held up well. I could move in today.

I always thought they were connected, too... and looped back to the kitchen.
@@JarOfRats Yep, and I now question whether it was just a hallway leading to a bathroom. Since I've seen Alice come out of there, I question why she would use that bathroom when she has her own private one off her bedroom.
@@centuryrox She could've been using or cleaning it ...

I knew it was used on Mannix but never thought about Robert playing 2 characters in the same set. Funny.

Wow! Well thought out. That all makes great sense. 🧡

This is TRUE! However, most of the episodes with Alice's room showed the laundry room outside her bedroom door.
@@retrounderground1 Yep. Definitely some inconsistencies.
There was some fabulous design going on back then, especially in movie and TV homes.

Yes, that layout back there changed quite a bit, didn't it?
I would have liked to of have seen Alice' room.

Great job on this. The only change I would make would be the hall behind the stairs. I would have continued the hall opposite the bathroom leading to Alice's living quarters. That would give her a direct route from her bedroom or laundry room to the front door should Sam the butcher come calling.
Someone else suggested that. It's a good idea

I love every television show and movie that you talk about and I also love the homes. I never realized how they did all of this beautiful cinematography until you explained it. The houses were almost like another character in themselves.
What a good way to explain it- the homes were characters unto themselves. 🥰

Wow this really brought me back to my younger days. Just a classic house and will never go ouit of style.
Yes. Love those stairs and Mike's den in particular.
Remember: Mom always says, "Don't play ball in the house."
Right. Impossible combination. Glad you got your questions answered.
Sam the butcher, a family show with a character that sounds like a mob Hitman
The actor who played Sam would later go on to play Archie Bunker's buddy on All In the Family and Archie Bunker's Place. IIRC, prior to The Brady Bunch, he appeared on McHale's Navy.
@@kevinnelson66 Every time I see "Sam" on the Brady Bunch, I can't help but "see" Barney Hefner, LOL.
I seem to remember him (this actor) doing several cameo appearances as different characters in the 70's and even into the 80's. But to me, he will always be Barney Hefner.
That actor also voiced Magilla Gorilla. Allan Melvin.

You are absolutely amazing and a joy!!!!
Next to the Bewitched house, the Brady house was one of my favorites. And of course the I Dream of Jeannie house.
You did a beautiful, amazing, and totally great job on this. The only thing I would change is that empty wall to the left of the TV. Also, unlike most real homes from the 60's and 70's, I'm happy that the Brady house doesn't have ashtrays sitting all over the place. Thank you again for a really enjoyable video!

I think they also occasionally parked a toy car in front to make the house look bigger.
you and your work is amazing.
