Can You Play Blues on a Metal Guitar?! | What Would SRV Do?

- There are many different types of guitars on the market! There are electric guitars, acoustic, classical, arch top, etc. With in those types are sub genres and specialty instruments ad nauseam. If you are into a particular style of music then you can be guaranteed that there is a guitar made and marketed to that specific style. This is a great thing! This specialization means that guitar scale lengths, hardware, tremolo, body style and pickups can be made to suit a style of music. But, do these strengths become weaknesses when the instrument is asked to do something it was not specifically made and marketed to do? Imagine if the Ibanez JEM, the signature model of Steve Vai had been the preferred guitar of Stevie Ray Vaughn, instead of a Stratocaster. Would it change our perspective or would it even work?! Let's find out!

4:12 for the playing (smh)
Flatpickers Rule!
The pickups sounded nice, kind of a white stripes crunch to it, but I wouldn’t prefer the play style of it, guitar sounded a little weak on its own.
Really enjoyed his playing, but the guitar haas no 'heart' and blues must have heart.
🤮
Anyone who says you can’t play blues on this... totally missing what makes the blues the blues. It’s not the guitar that makes the blues, it’s the musician.
Also have never heard Steve vai play. The man can play every style. Of course the Jem can play the blues
I like to play blues on a Les Paul, an Ibanez S, a GS Mini, a ukulele, an old Simon & Patrick, a flute, or whatever instrument I can use. They each have their own sound. They are all fun in their own way. What makes blues fun is that you can play it anywhere with anyone even if you've never played together before.
Can people stop saying that? “It’s not the guitar......”
@@gutenbird it’s true though
@@lzasyr to an extent it is the guitar.
@@redram5150 yeah but most of the time it’s true
Honestly you can play any style of music on any guitar. It comes down to two things: the player and the tone (which comes from a combination of the effects, amp settings used and the speaker in the amp or cab). Granted, some styles sound better on certain on other guitars, but honestly I think if you're a blues and all you've got is say an 8 string kiesel, I think you could manage.
Can’t forget the tone of the pickups contributing to the sound.
Everyone whining here about blues being impossible on humbuckers......what about BB King, Albert King, and ANY blues guitarist using a 335 for blues? SRV is not the only blues guitarist on the planet. I prefer blues on humbuckers, single coils do nothing for me.
Yea even flying v’s were used by them
@@usta028 and SGs and Les Pauls
There is a big difference between low output humbuckers and high output humbuckers / active pickups. The sound of Gibson's Classic 57' and the sound of EMG's are tremendously different for exemple, especialy on the dynamics of the sound, the response from pick attack, output volume as well, etc.
That being said, you can blues the shit out of any guitar with any pickups configurations and any amp. The sound comes from the player, not the gear anyway. BUT will the tone be delicious ? I doubt
They were using PAFs humbucker, not some mega output humbucker
@@jannatinkarlen8702 : yes and no, lots of rock/shred/metal players use Duncan JB and Jazz humbuckers. Those are also used for blues (and jazz). Especially the JB has quite some output. I'm not talking about the "full shred" or "nazgul". Those might be a bit much :)
You can do ANYTHING on an ibanez.
The real test is if you can shred on a telecaster!
I think the karate kid got you covered
Why, can you explain?
@@feridaliyev1963 watch crossroads lol
Richie Kotzen does it!
Go put a John 5 video on and you tell me
My first guitar was a Martin Stinger Strat, black with a white pick guard cus all I wanted was to sound like Eric Clapton. I quickly found out that I hated the shape of its neck, and pretty much any Strat by any brand I tried. What I fell in love with was a Wizard II on the Ibanez RG series. What I bought was an RG470 with a George Lynch Screaming Demon humbucker at the bridge. I can assure you that yes, a guitar typically associated with metal can work with blues. I spent many hours playing SRV, Hendrix, Cream, and Robin Trower among others on that guitar
You should have tried different pickup positions especially 2 & 4.
Yeah.. I wanted to hear 2. It has a more Strat like tone IMO
I didn't like it at all. It didn't have that deep, dark, guttural, soul wrenching sound.
I play blues, rockabilly, metal, rock, and jazz on a Jackson dinky.
Of course you can
I know anf I still wanna see it happen😝
One of the reasons I bought a jem was the wide variety of music that can be played and sound great with a jem. And that's something that can't be done with all guitars
Don't forget the Telecaster
telecaster looks ugly and old 🤣@@joshuadelsaraza4782
To be fair the jem/jem jr isnt a metal guitar lol. I have one, its just a rock guitar built for soloing
He's played the blues well On it
If somebody told me it was a Strat with a Fuzz pedal and the volume knob rolled a bit off, hell, I l’d believe it.
why not even close
Needs less distortion. Too fuzzy on the lower ends. Other than that, nailed it.
Awesome playing, but I prefer cleaner neck sounds. This one sounded really good on the single notes in the higher registers, but got it got a little fuzzy for me when playing the muti note double stops and whatnot. Then again, anything with humbuckers probably will. I suspect those in that guitar were a little hotter than avg though.
He CAN play the blues on a can opener if he tried really hard..no doubt about that. But..there is a shredder type of "sound" to it that just took it away from the blues. To me anyway. I'm sure if you swapped out the pickups you could make that axe do anything..but not with those two hum buckers.
I look forward to the next one!! Thanks!
There are plenty blues guitarists that use humbuckers,
You say that like it doesn't have a single coil
4th and second pos split the humbuckers anyway lol
awful demo
I can play everything but it sounds shitty
You come home from whatever hell, grab a string cheese you can bang out blues
That was awesome, but would like to hear the Ibanez compared to a 335 on the same setup. My guess is the 335 sounds even better.
Not my preferred blues sound. I think the sound you were getting here would have been more akin to a Hendrix tone.
Should have tried other positions, but... I get the point. Lol
It is virtually all about marketing. Page used a Tele for Led Zep 1 , Blackmore and Hendrix used Strats, Sonic Youth Jazzmasters - the list is endless. Maybe less these days as pro musicians are either given or paid to play a company’s guitars and that will likely be based on the market segment they are looking to exploit.
True albert king even plays flying V’s, so will the guys that are whining here that humbuckers or whatever don’t sound right for blues argue that albert king, bb king etc DON’T sound blues? XD
I got an Ibanez superstrat HSH mics and I think that you can play whatever you want on it. Great video !!
You can play any kind of music on any guitar.
Sure, but it won't necessary sound very good...
Hi I really like your Blues music run in this guitar too, always remember SRV playing its style of Blues in Fender st. But anyway it is also good one. Wish you "Merry Christmas " from faraway island in the Indian ocean.
I have both the Jem Jr and many Strats. The bottom line is, the Jem Jr can go through the motions for any genre, but for specifically blues its missing that quintessential single coil position 4 classic QUACK!
Clearly you can pláy the blues on a metal guitar. It just won't sóund like you're playing the blues on a strat.
Well Cooper can make any guitar a blues guitar …. The the est of us lol I don’t think the tone of these sound like the blues …. The guitars are great !!! But not a blues AX imho
you can easily play metal and blues equally well with classic PAF humbuckers, but you can't really play blues with high output ceramic pickups. Well you can, but there is something missing
Love all the colors this cool axe comes in, and they didn't leave out us lefties 😊
Dude lol Ibanez is not mexican/spanish but a Japanese company. If you really want to be picky with the pronunciation of origin it would be Aibanīzu.
Heck of a fucking player, I think it's more in the player than the guitar but this guitar doesn't sound so good on the lower register and blues really depends on those mellow and creamy lower notes.
That tone did not do Coopers playing justice. Incredible.
Great playing but that guitar was definitely not designed for playing blues
Pickups would change the whole sound quite a lot - it only matters what guitar you enjoy playing
blues on shredding guitars with low action hurts my hands give me a strat with high action anyday where I can grab them strings and bend frig out of them
No not my idea of a good blues sound.
Did not like this for blues at all. Like you two however.
Of course you can play blues on it. You can play blues on anything.
Awesome playing brother !
cool video. But i m disappointed i thought at one point he couldnt stand and start to shred anyway :(
His Style based on a strat or tele
No duck sounds on hammer ONS 😥
It was ok. Metal (with vocals)on ukulele would be more impressive.
i play blues on ibanez jem XD
i can do it but it feels flat
good playing blues you cool on shred ibanez
SRV could play the blues on a shovel if he wanted to
It's all about the amp to be honest
Can u play metal with telecaster?
Sound reminds me of Robbie Kreiger from the Doors
Metal on a hollow body
😆
Red fang plays stoner metal on fenders and one of the guitarists uses an hollow body tele
Cooper's playing was stellar. There is no doubt you could play any style on a Jem. The Infinity pups in this Jem are not producing a nice Blues tone. Could've done with something a bit 'warmer'. They sounded a bit too 'broken up' as well. Maybe they're simply too high output? It's difficult to know if Amp EQ could have fixed this. It would be interesting to hear the same test with a Jem7V rather than this Jr. The Dimarzio Evo's are quite a lot more 'twanky' and potentially a better fit for Blues.
That’s what I was thinking. It’s too hot and compressed sounding. Seems like it would be hard to achieve that dynamic, creamy, warm tone
Answers that question.
Good
IM from Mississippi where blues is a common style, I also play Ibanez primarily but was wondering what pickup position you were using? It has a 5 way and you can bluesier tones in the 3,4 and 5 position. And back off the volume knob just a touch. But as in earlier comments if you play the Blues it really Dosent matter what you play it on. Keep up the good work guys
This is way more of an amp question than guitar question but even than yes you can play Blues on a "metal amp"... case in point Joe Bonamassa uses an 1987 Silver Jubilee Marshall 2555 and a JCM 800... soooo i think the answer is... If you can play the Blues and to you personally its more than just music? Than yes your Zach Wild Epiphone full on active pickups freggin Kerry King signature JCM 800... yes you can play the blues... Hell I play Blues and I have an Ibanez Tone Blaster TBX150R solid state amp, made in China.... Not gonna lie the amp has fantastic tone for metal... but my main amp is a Ceriatone Marshall JTM45 head with 2 1955 made in England KT66 "windowed" smoked glass brown bottom tubes, and I used the Ibanez TBX150R as a cabinet... because the 2 Ibanez speakers housed within were made in Japan...
Stevie Ray Vai
Ofcouse you can but it will be difficult to play like srv or Hendrix style of muting and aggressive chucking with such flat radius and low action.
As the saying goes…it doesn’t matter what you play it on, it matters what you play on it. You can play some low down, greasy, soulful blues on a shredder guitar even tho it doesn’t look the part, such as in this video. If this was on a recording, no one would know that the guitar used for it was a hot pink, Ibanez JEM made for metal. So I say go for it, break the rules, and use a heavy metal guitar for the blues.
I tell people all the time musical instruments for the most part have no genre. Some are better at certain genres but nothing is exclusive
Well... You can play blues on the Vai as Cooper showed us but didn't have the distinc sound of a single coil we recognize immediately and love , coil split mod and you're good then. Single coil in the neck is optimum. I mostly prefer HSS Strat, P90's or Traditional Tele. I do have 3 HSH, 2 are Strats. No c.split but sounds good.1 is a metal guitar and the neck H B is not. that good for blues. May swap that out.
Steve Vai and satriani have a lot of blues in their style so yes.. I play blues on a rg3550 and rg770
It'd be nice to see the same guy playing a Fender and the Ibanez. The Fender would set the expectation...
Based on my experience changing style, different guitar demands to be played differently.
The moment i stepped away from shredding, my shreddy guitar barely feels right to play anymore.
That's why i traded my musicman JP for a les paul standard.
I have an Ibanez and it's the only electric I've ever had, it sounds perfect for the blues because it's an electric guitar. The humbuckers affect the sound a bit for the blues but it really doesn't matter. Getting a strat soon
Sounds better then expected. Do miss a tiny bit of articulation of lower wound pickups. You can also tell these pickups are kinda already driving the amp. But like I said. Sounded pretty sweet. Good player 👌
It didn't sound quite right for the blues. The tone was brittle sounding.
I don't like tone Ibanez to play blues..
I would like to hear Coopers opinion?
I have a Jackson dinky and blues sounds so good on it
It really doesn't sound that great for blues. Lead guitar in Testament by Alex Skolnick in the late 80's and 90's did sound great using the Ibanez RG550. 80's, 90's Metal.
It doesn't great cause of the setup. Those puppies got some high pickups and isn't probably playing in the middle.
Of course we can. However a guitar like that on SRV's hands would probably be out of tune ( even with nut lock on ) once he would beguin to really pull the strings with bendings. I have a friend who is a blues guitarrist and I saw him pull all the strings when bending so that the top E string joined the bottom E string, on a Floyd equiped guitar, and the temolo went beserk and the guitar went out of tune, pretty quickly.
These don’t go out of tune with strings that are new and stretched lol. Can also block trem off.
Do a jazz master for blues
Good video, thanks
Happy Holidays Chris and Cooper and everyone at Alamo Music . Love your videos. Explicit info and great playing 🎸
Nice like me
Can you make a video of budget acoustic guitar list in 2019
Can it do funk and jazz tho
thats an entry-level Jem, that will sound shit regardless of genre! should've tried the proper one :)
4:11
It’s a guitar. To me that means it plays guitar music. I’d love to see and hear it play flamenco.
I dont think an electric can use flamenco techniques 👀
I thought blues sounds great on that Gem!
No twang -- no blues)
That handle is for throwing it into trash.
But he plays good. HXmas from LES
😂😂
