You had me at “I know it sounds really boring.” Ha ha. This is the second time this week I’ve heard the title. I do enjoy books about academia. Your review made me write this title down to check out when I am off this goofy read what you own challenge. Thank you! Great non-spoilers review. 👏🏻👏🏻 - MJ
I don't know how I feel about the fact that you loved it, I've wanted to read it for a little while now so it'll go on the priority list for next... hopefully it's one we agree on 🤞
One of my all time favourite books. Quietly, sublimely, devastating. Can I recommend Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates as well. This book is probably my favourite book. A devastating take on the American suburban dream written in the 1950s I think.
Damnit! I saw loads of copies of this in the bookshop I went in on the way home from work, literally 20minutes before I got the notification for this video. I was tempted by it, but as I was only there to drop off old books as a donation to the shop to support them (2ns hand and new shop) and to get Christmas presents I avoided buying books for me.
Somehow, this book had never come across my radar until this video. I just finished reading it and agree it was fantastic - one of my all-time favorites. Thanks for the recommendation and video!
I graduated from the University of Denver the year after Williams retired. I also had friends in the department who had high respect for Williams. I had a favorite quote from Stoner, but had never read the book until decades later. It was effective and affecting in a way I can't quite describe. Stoner is a sort of existential "hero" or maybe better described as an existential survivor of living. It reminded me of MIddlemarch where Eliot says: ". . . the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.” This to me exemplifies William Stoner, and by extension all of our lives, no matter how conventionally profound or ambitious or historic. A great book for discussion, debate, and reflection.,
I don't know how to put it, but obviously your sphere is living under a rock. 😜 But I am very happy you loved a book by one of my favourite authors. 😘 I've read all four of his books.
I’ve always meant to read this but kind of thought it would be a bit boring so I was pretty surprised how much you liked it! Another one on my radar, too much fomo! 😂
This has been on my shelf for so long!! So many people have told me it’s amazing. You’ve given me the push to get it done. Thanks for the review :) x
Same! I have it on my Kindle where books go to be forgotten. I really must read it.
Woohoo!! Do it!! 🤩
This was my favourite book of the year when I read it :)
I can see why - such an awesome read!
I absolutely love this book. All-time favourite.

I completely agree.
It’s so cool that you were at Denver at the same time as Williams! Have you read any of his other books???
Added it to my TBR! Thanks for the rec!
Woohoo! You’re very welcome. I hope you love it as much as I did 😄
This is one I picked up from the charity shop a little while ago and has just sat on my shelf since then. Sounds like I need to pick it up
