When I hear recordings of Kollo of this quality I am reminded why I loved him so much when I began my love for Wagner in the mid 80s. It looks like the early 70s were his heyday. Given that this is a live recording I can now be certain that Kollo's contemporaneous excellent recording of Tannhauser under Solti is not due to engineering tricks. While he is not exactly a heldentenor he was an exciting singer to listen to even when his instrument declined. Unfortunately, he lost much of his voice by the time he recorded Tristan in 1982. I enjoyed that Kleiber recording for years until I started listening to better performances.
His Solti recording is great, as is this performance. There's also a video of him in the role, conducted by Zubin Mehta I think. At that point he lost control of his voice and the wobble is intolerable.
