Do you guys distinguish between music that is loud and music that is just in the background and you don't notice it unless you listen hard? Also, what about the rare breed of restaurant that has a live piano player? Personally I can't stand to be blasted out by music unless I am playing it myself, but I enjoy walking into a store and then hearing a song I like that I haven't heard in a while, and I can barely hear it, but then it is stuck in my head all day. I am nearly totally blind, and for me, music is one of the forms of beauty, just like seeing flowers or something else might be for someone who can see. Someone with vision would probably appreciate it if they were driving and they passed a deer on the road or something. It's the same for me if I hear a good song when I walk into a store. Usually I flippin' hate shopping, but hearing music in the background makes it a bit more enjoyable.

If you are a professional musician, like Julian Lloyd Webber (i was an opera singer) your ears are trained to follow music very acutely. This is necessary for your profession but the drawback is that it is impossible to switch off. If background muzak, which is not meant to be listened to for its own sake, is playing, even if it is not loud, a trained ear picks up on it and cannot block it out. When not performing or rehearsing or choosing to listen to other performers, your head needs a rest. These days people seem frightened of simply enjoying ambient sound. Many documentaries on TV, which would be fine with just a spoken commentary, are ruined by intrusive and often wholly unsuitable added music. I think we all enjoy a good song, but I'd be much happier without muzak.
