The cast gels brilliantly, and there's genuine warmth there between them. The lads were affectionate towards old Rigsby and vice versa, although it was disguised with mockery. That's why I like this show. Some shows are sexist, or narcissistic and vacuous, or hateful, or all of those things. But Rising Damp had heart.
just a quick note to thank you for uploading these. They are fantastic to watch whilst I wait for the dvd's to arrive. I still find it heartbreaking to know that just a few years later Richard Beckinsale died, and so young too. But how fantastic that we have his work that still makes us laugh, smile and brings such warmth. Again, thank you for uploading and sharing :)
I honestly can't think of another actor other than Rossiter that could have played Rigsby. His flawless delivery and timing couldn't have been equaled by anyone then and certainly not now. Sadly, almost all of our finest comedy writers and actors seem to have gone now.
comedy at its best...the reflection at the window line was also used a few years later in the fishing trip episode of only fools and horses..think the episode was called friday the 14th..john sullivan must have been a rising damp fan too..
I can't think of many British Sitcoms that were funnier than Rising Damp. If it had been a BBC show, it would've been on as often as Fawlty Towers and OFAH have been on over the years and it would be a lot bigger and a lot more loved than it is.

One of the best comedies ever, easily up there with the Steptoe and son and Fawlty towers series's.
Better
