Thank you for this video! But I've discovered that you don't need to remove their protective husk. They'll sprout just fine if you put into the soil with the husk. The husk might even extend the shelf life of the seeds.
Yes, they do sprout with the husk on. It's more natural to have it on, because that's the way nature would do it. I've never seen any for sale with the husks though.
Hi thank you for this video. I chopped the tops of the carrots off and grew in water then planted in soil and compost. 12 weeks i have so many large flowers and soon i will have thousands of seeds. This was part of lockdown.🙏
Great video in good timing for me to look at saving my one huge Nantes carrot SEED from last year! I Lived in Central Oregon for 14 yrs 88-02 and was always fascinated with the acres and acres of carrot seed grown in Culver Oregon and watching friends harvest with a combine machine!
I started looking around for videos to help with growing my own produce for home cooking and reading through the comments I feel I've found a very helpful guide. Thank you!
10.05.2021 - worked like a charm. The sieves, that is... It's very dark out here in the Piney Woods of Texas but in the morning, I will give it a try with a light wind or box fan. Thank you for the video.
Such a BRILLIANT How to video and this was so interesting to watch how you harvest carrot seeds :-) I am learning so much from watching your vids Jim :-) thanks a million for sharing and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happy growing from right across the Emerald Isle and have a FANTASTIC Friday ahead XXXXX
honored to follow your channel Monsieur, i was actually wondering how to get seeds from carrots since no carrots grow from planting the cuttings of a carrot
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! After I make sure they are completely dry, I store mine in plastic envelopes. Or you can use paper envelopes you want. They should be viable for 5 or 6 years.
True. You would need a bunch. I was surprised at how many seeds I got from one carrot. I have a sandwich bag that is about 1/4 full of seeds.....and there are still seed heads that aren't ready to pick yet.
That's some pretty serious heat there. I don't really treat hot peppers any differently than I treat my sweet peppers. I usually ad a good amount of homemade compost when I plant, then I might fertilize once later on if I think it needs it. I always top all of my peppers a couple of times then they are small. That's about it.
@@MidwestGardener yes sir about 2.3 million Scoville units. At present time. The hottest pepper on the planet. Unless the proove pepper X to be real. I use a leaf horse and chicken mix compost. Did really well on my Tia dragons and jalapeno last year. I want to do some graphs this year.
Sure, you don't have to do it this way. A lot of the seeds in the seed heads stick together, and this process also takes care of that. But you can plant them just the way they are and they should come up.
Rose, I would say that in collecting seeds, you may not get the same type of carrot if you have hybrid varieties, as the new carrots are likely to grow with characteristics of one of the parent varieties. When you buy seeds you know what you're getting. But... surprise varieties might be more interesting!
@@LiaraJane Thanks. I answered my own question this year. The seeds I saved had a much better germination rate than the ones I had purchased from a seed company.
Hi.. how would I go about saving seeds from carrots..i live in Canada and we get really freezing temperatures in winter..do I have to grow the plant in a pot..and over winter indoors? Thanks so much
Some types produce flowers and go to see the first year. I've had purple dragon carrots do that several times. Another way to help them survive the winter in the ground it to mulch them heavily.
If those are first year carrots that are bolting, you definitely don't want to save seed from those. Unless you want to select for carrots that bolt in the first year.
Thank you -- I need this information now that self-sufficiency is becoming very necessary!
You're welcome! Great point. Glad I could help!

@@MidwestGardener Yes same here, never seen them with husk on. Also, I like how the husk have tiny hairs, probably helps stick to the ground.
@@ramz1455 Probably so.
Thank you Sir. This year is the first that I'm harvesting carrot seeds and your video is the best one I've found. Saving and subscribing!

Excellent video very well done, sir!
Thank you very much! Glad you liked it!
Since last year, I learned to leave a few carrots to flower in spring. The bees love the carrot flowers and of course, tons of seed!
Good point! The bees love the flowers, and sometimes butterflies too.

Glad it worked for you, Stefanie! The nice thing about carrots is that letting only a few go to seed usually producing quite a few seeds.
Hello Jim, a really comprehensive look at saving carrot seed, thankyou my friend.

Great information Jim. Seed saving is a good thing. Best wishes Bob.
These are heirlooms, so they should be like the one that produced the seeds.
That's great. Have a great day. Looks like it is a good thing we are not in Florida right now.

That for sure. I have cousins down there, so I'm sure they are having a rough day.

@@off-gridhillbillystyle3735 Sounds like you are doing pretty well already. Won't be long and we can get this season started.
If there is only one seed per pod, why not leave them in the pod. It would make it easier to plant with less thinning would it not?

What variety of carrots are these? Mine never flower 🙁
I think they were Purple Dragon. Have you tried overwintering them. Most carrots won't flower until the second year.
@@MidwestGardener Thank you! And no I haven't, but I will now. :)

Nice techniques and ounces of free seed. Do you save seeds from any other veg? I'm thinking beets...
I saved tomato seeds, lettuce, and a few radishes. I'm thinking that I might try beets next year.
This guide is perfect! Do the seeds you save have better germination than store bought seeds?
Thanks Rose! I've never really compared them to store bought ones, but I never really noticed a difference.

How long it takes to produce flowers
Probably about two or three months. Usually in the second year.
What would happen if you plant them without removing the hulls on them?
I haven't done that, but I'm assuming that they would probably still come up fine. I haven't tested it though.
