Here's how to not have to wait two years. Plant carrot tops in the ground after you used them in a dish. The top is already mature, so it'll re-root, flower, and produce seed that same year.
When you save your own seed, the germination rates are fantastic which makes you wonder how old the seed is that you buy in the shops. It's great to save your own seed when you can.
I saved carrot seeds during the early summer this year and then planted them in August. They germinated almost a week quicker than my store brought seed. It was a long process especially cleaning them but you get so much more seed.
One of my carrots is starting to go to seed. I do want to seed save as best I can this year. I've also got spinach going to seed. Thanks for the great tips! 😊🥕
Great tutorial man. Seed saving is something I def had intentions on looking into and now I know my source. I bet saving those Rainbow Carrots were hard to do with as cool looking as they sound. Thanks again, appreciate it.
Finally! I made it through my first season of 2 years waiting for my carrots to go to seed. They kind of look like my Dill plants that I already collected a few days ago. Your carrot seeds kind of look like dill seeds with spike thingys. Okay, got it. Right now I'm still in flowering umbel stage. There are little teenie tiny wasp pair that's been admiring them lately.
This is timely. A few of my carrots and all my parsley bolted in year one. We had a warm then cold stretch in the spring and I think it tricked them into thinking its year two. I have my seed heads ready to go.
I don't remember what variety of carrot I planted from your catalog but it flowered year one, zone 9a. I'm waiting for the drying process to see what I get
This guy is my growing GURU as I prepare to embark on my maiden voyage, into Allotment Growing !!! Although first, I will have to wait three weeks, and then clear the offered Plot of two years worth of growth and weeds, due to the previous Tennent doing nothing with the plot for that long lol, so it will probably be spring time before I can fully start gardening properly... But Hey-Ho and away I go =D (HAHA and just as I was typing this, I have been offered the viewing of another Allotment Plot on another site...so maybe I might be planting this year after all !!! ... fingers crossed =DDD)
I love the container idea, I was thinking I want to keep growing my carrots for seed but I also want to grow my winter greens, and I was thinking how can I grow these and save space
I planted carrots this year in spring and they are going to seed and it looks like I will get seeds sometime in the next month. And this is the first year that I have successfully plant and harvest carrots.
And I simply let the carrots grow to see what they would do. And there was a point where I couldn't weed them do to life and when I got in there to weed they had started to produce flowers. In the next months several of the carrots that I hadn't harvested yet where blooming. The flowers brought so many pollinators and they are beautiful.
I planted your rainbow blend along with several other kinds of carrots and i have several different varieties and colors in bloom and i am super excited to see what the seeds grow in to next year. I was hoping to save seeds from several different plants this year. I planed on leaving the carrots in tell the end of the season and maybe replanting them next spring to get seeds. However it looks like I will be planting the seeds of this last year next year. Maybe carrots aren't biannuals, maybe they just need to be planted in spring and then left all year? What an incredible world God made.
Thank you for this video. I had a carrot grow this year on its own and go to flower so I let it to see what it would do. and now it is time for me to harvest the seed. cant wait to plant to see if they will grow. Again thank you.
Thanks you for your knowledge on saving carrots seeds. I live in N.C. and I plant carrots in the fall. You can't find seeds.Walmarts had seeds in the summer but in August all seeds are sent back to the co. So its impossible to find carrot seeds for the fall. The same with onion seeds.
great video. After saving dried seeds. you say the plant wants to reproduce. Any idea what would happen if you planted the remaining damp seed heads? You are a sage, totally enjoy your videos. Maybe a play on words?
OK, we eat our carrots and take the tops and replant them around our fruit trees and buildings, so they are out of the way. The tops grow and go to seed and you still get to eat the carrot and don't have to wait two whole years for the flower. Make sure your carrot spent some time in the fridge so it thinks a winter has past. Don't start in water and move to dirt, just lay the top down on your dirt and sprinkle some mulch over it and water. Carrots hate, hate, hate, being moved and tend to lose all their tops everytime. We started our tops this spring, also a bunch of rainbows. We used organic rainbows and the cheap regular non organic orange ones. Even with no green on them, it grows back. Only needs 1/2 inch of actual carrot to be a root. Have dozens of flowers that are seeded now, in late summer. Just a few months, start to finish. Here to see how to save these seeds. Thanks Luke! We watch so many of your videos. You've taught us a lot
That was another awesome and super useful video! Ty so much i have 1 seed head that still is a flower and well I'm waiting! But I'm so glad you showed/told me exactly what I need to do next! Thanks again!
I have a random carrot growing in my flower bed. it's only been there since this year for sure but it has a flower. will those seeds be viable? ( it's a for sure carrot and not the queen anne lace)
We planted them and they were so pretty! I can't wait till next year when I grow them. It is always interesting what you get when you don't protect them from cross pollinating with the carrots just next to them.
I didn't know they were biannual. I typically plant twice as much, so I can harvest a fresh batch in the spring (Northern Ontario here). One time I decided to let a few continue to grow and they began to rott? So idk what happened, but it wasn't going to flower.
Awesome, can you do a video someday on how to store seeds properly over the winter for next spring? What best method works for you and what kind of container or bag to use? Love this video, i was questioning on how harvest seeds from carrots and never done it before. THank you!
So I got carrot seeds months ago and my mom swiped them and planted them without thinking about rows or how many seeds go in each hole (pretty much threw the seed down willy nilly). Long story short, one was quite bigger than the others so i let him grow longer to see how big it could get. Now, I have the most insanely huge carrot growing in my planter and it's just started to flower in the past week. Isn't that pretty fast to have them flower already? It is a super carrot. So do I leave the flowers on until they start drying up, right? Otherwise I would have to dry them out in a box like u said with more bugs attracted to that.
This is new to me,, I came across this and watched it. Can you do beets the same? I bought carrot seed today and they have a red like covering over them, is that normal and why do they have that on them?
How do you store in the winter in Michigan l grow in containers ,put in a place that doesn't freeze ,would you continue to water or do they go dormant .
I am currently living in the high Andes of Ecuador and have planted "White Carrots" (Zanhorrias Blancas in Ecuador and "Arracocha" in Brazil and other parts of South America). This is a native root that is native to the Andes and is related to carrots, celery, and parsnips.j I will be planting Chantenay red cored 2 and Berlicum 2, both from seed, right across the path from the Blancas. I am excited to discover what I will get if they cross pollinate. I envision something looking like a "50-50" Ice Cream bar; Orange on the outside and white on the inside. This will be fun.
I have planted tops of carrots into the soil and they started to grow green staff on top. Can the carrots regrow from tops? Full carrot will be grown from the tops or just seeds would be able to be harvested? if plant seeds how fast can grow a carrot?
@MIgardener For some reason my first year carrots flowered, but carrot seed moths planted their caterpillars! When I finally figured out what was wrong I'd lost many umbras! I picked out all the brats that I could find. Is there anything else I can do?
can you tell me the best way to grow carrots? plus i am trying to make the compost but its wet and not breaking well, please can you suggest me. thanks
i have quit a few heirloom carrots and want to grow some next year for seeds. do i have to plant away from each other? will they cross pollinate if planted together?
Will a carrot produce a flower every year, but seeds every 2? I left a carrot in the ground this summer because it grew flowers and I was hoping to get seeds. Or won't it have seeds this year?
Way back in my beginner gardeneing days, I accidentally planted summer carrots in the winter, and as soon as summer hit, they went to seed... don't know if it'll work again, though!
Did you say that i can plant a store bought carrot in the ground and it will grow seeds next spring. Or does the carrot have to be garden fresh carrot.
the thing I like about pulling them and then replanting, is you can pick the biggest, prettiest, pest free-est, and crack free carrot you have. better breeding. thanks for the video. 😊
Can I trick carrot into flowering earlier by simulating season passage as can be done with many bulb plants by putting them in a fridge for a couple months twice?
Mother nature always sets extra seeds , she is abundant and divine :-) I love coldoranges, best snack in the world. But only organic ones.... the nonorganic ones contain up to 32 pesticides and are among the 'dirty dozen' of fruits polluted. But get organic, then best snack I know... nothing comes even close They get better when cooled in refridgerator box And it's perfect for late night snack, or morning snack
Your videos are great. Thank you. I read someplace carrots are in the same family as cabbage? Is that true and is there a way to keep them from cross pollinating? Thank you
No, it's not true. Carrots are related to celery, celery root (celeriac), fennel, parsnips, and lots of herbs used for their foliage and/or seeds, including angelica, anise, caraway, coriander, cumin, chervil, cilantro, dill, lovage, and parsley. All of their leaves are light and feathery, esp dill, coriander(cilantro). Cabbage is a brassica related to brocolli , cauliflower, bok choi, Chard, Spinach(?), Brussels sprouts, rocket etc. Big leafy greens
never knew that about carrots...love learning about gardening. Does the expiration date on seed packets mean what that say or do they last a little longer like canned goods?
You don't want the one that bloom the first year's seeds because the resulting plants will be more likely to bolt the first year too, and that means they're not making carrots, they're making flower stalks. Even better is to either dig all your carrots, taste a little bit from the bottom tip and save out the ones that taste the best, replant them in the spring and let only those go to seed so you'll get sweet, good tasting carrots, or leave them all in the ground so the kind that can last through the winter are the ones that make seeds (if you want to store your winter carrots in the ground). You can take up to 1/3 of the root to taste and the rest will still grow new roots and the flower stalk and make seeds. Professional carrot seed growers (the good ones) taste every carrot and keep them in storage through winter and replant in the spring.
I thought they will flower on the second year, but our Carnival Blend that we grew on 4/17/2016 has already flowered (flowers look like cauliflowers). Are these good? hmm... We are in zone 10b.
@@MIgardener I have a TON of queen Anne's lace growing on my property...I was worried about that too but my carrots never seeded...just rotted in the soil 🤷🏻♀️ I've been trying for two years. The last one I dug up after the foliage died looked like a little dried orange web. That's all that was left.
Year 1: Purchase carrot seeds, grow carrots, harvest & eat carrots, but leave 4-5 carrots in ground/repot. Year 2: Purchase carrot seeds, grow carrots, harvest & eat carrots, but leave 4-5 carrots in ground/repot Also watch for Year 1 carrots to return; let them flower and go to seed -- harvest seeds from Year 1 carrots. Year 3: Plant carrot seeds harvested in Year 2, grow carrots, harvest & eat carrots, but leave 4-5 carrots in ground/repot. Also watch for Year 2 carrots to return; let them flower and go to seed -- harvest seeds from Year 2 carrots. We save our carrot seeds much the same way here on the homestead... Thanks for sharing !!!
Good to know! It is definitely easy to do and a very big money saver.
It is... Takes a lot of patience though... We are working on how to home pelletize seed... I think it would come in handy with carrot seeds as well...

Couldn't disagree with that!
How much do you need to water the replanted carrot root in a container and when you harvest the seed-how do you store it?
Can you start a store bought organic carrot? I've tried for two years to overwinter my carrot and they keep rotting...

Soooo, how did you sort the bugs out? Is it okay to freeze the carrot seed to kill any bugs and keep them good.
Can we use carrot tops instead?
In my country it might get down to -20 celsium in winter season, would carrots survive low temperature and provide flowers in the second year?
Yes i think so. COuld insulate them with a mulch of leaves or straw , woodchips etc.
Can you plant carrot seeds in a container for saving seeds the following year and is September too late for doing so?
Your videos are great. Thank you. I read someplace carrots are in the same family as cabbage? Is that true and is there a way to keep them from cross pollinating? Thank you
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it! :D Hopefully you will enjoy the tons of content we have coming out!
I would like to know what is the best way to deal with the carrot fly and it's larva?
never knew that about carrots...love learning about gardening. Does the expiration date on seed packets mean what that say or do they last a little longer like canned goods?
they last just a little bit longer but not a whole ton.
If I grow multiple heirloom carrot varieties will they cross pollinate with each other?
Carrots are related to a couple of wildflowers. How do you isolate your blooming carrots to keep them from cross pollinating?
looking for the same answer :)
Nice video!
If I buy a carrot in the supermarket and plant it, will I get seeds the next year?
could i buy a carrot from the store and grow that to have seeds the same year?
How did you get rid of the bugs?
I plan on harvesting seeds next year but I don't want to bring bugs into my house after the seeds are harvested.
I have grown my carrot seeds at the beginning of this September when do I get the seeds please?
Do white carrots go to seed faster? Mine flowered within 4 months of flower
What if I get flowers first year? Are they viable seeds?
Can you keep the carrots outside in the winter for the second growing year? Or should you take them inside ?
Same question I have. I live in wisconsin
What about cross polinisation, hybridation ?
Awesome information. Thank you!!
So glad it was helpful!
I thought they will flower on the second year, but our Carnival Blend that we grew on 4/17/2016 has already flowered (flowers look like cauliflowers). Are these good? hmm... We are in zone 10b.
Sometimes stress can cause them to bolt, but most will wait 2 years.
Could you replant the damp seed head that's left over?
Anyone know what the little bugs are and if they hurt the seeds?
fantastic video, thank you
if you will lay them up somewhere warm to dry out is another way to save those high dollar seeds
Have you done a growing guide on Okra??
throw seeds on ground and watch them grow. well at least that's how easy it is to grow on my side of the world lol.
Can you leave it in the ground during the winter
on my left as I watch you. the brown pot. look like 3-4 plants what is that?
UGH! I see all the little bugs. I was just about to bring it into my house to dry. Good thing I watched this first!
Hey Luke, will this "Rambo" seed blend be in the MIgardener.com store for folks to purchase?
Thanks
Luke, how do you eliminate the little bugs in the pan once you have your seeds ???
I just sift the seed through a fine mesh that holds the seeds but all the small bugs and other things fall through.
Thank You
After sifting, could add food grade diatamacious earth to kill any new bugs. LOL
They'll walk away eventually, they don't want to be there, in the open. Leave em somewhere to escape to and ur sorted
Could I replant store bought carrots that still have their stem and leaves?
How do you get rid of the bugs from the carrot seeds?
I saved some this year in a similar way, but was worried about cross pollination with similar looking "weeds"
I have heard of that happening, but it honestly very unlikely.
@@MIgardener I have a TON of queen Anne's lace growing on my property...I was worried about that too but my carrots never seeded...just rotted in the soil 🤷🏻♀️ I've been trying for two years. The last one I dug up after the foliage died looked like a little dried orange web. That's all that was left.
so if you plant carrots, and leave them for 2 years they seed. Then pull and plant new? or leave them and in another 2 years have more seeds?
Year 1: Purchase carrot seeds, grow carrots, harvest & eat carrots, but leave 4-5 carrots in ground/repot.
