For a person like me who is allergic to paint thinners oil sticks can be a game changer. All the time you are learning and experimenting with a new medium you are teaching as as well. Amazing content 👍🏼
Similar are used in graffiti they are called solid paint sticks and are used for sketching on a wall or for rougher surfaces that would destroy a normal marker
Now that Jazza's done a rough sketch, next time do a refined oil painting like those fancy regal portraits. Maybe just a small one so that he doesn't go crazy.

In a way yes but for the most part no they are way more runny and loose it almost feels like using lipstick that doesn't break apart easily when it touches paper
I'm in an art history class this semester so watching you use oil paints reminded of some of the amazing masterpieces I've been learning about. Honestly these two "sketches" that you have created look like works that would be in textbooks or museums some day.
I was thinking this exactly!! Just thinking how jazza's 'style' and paint stick strokes would be interpreted and described had me really wanting a 70 year long collab:-)
When Jazza says he’d go insane if he did a refine oil painting....I used to do them and with working on them 4 hours a week they took year years and not nearly as good whoops
I never could get the hang of oils. Or acrylics even. The way the colours mixed just never wanted to work with me no matter my amount of practice, it didn’t improve my issues with the paints. I ended up being at decent water based mediums and wouldn’t trade my skills with them for the world, though I must admit oil paint makes me feel a bit defeated haha
I really love how you explore art and make it so accessible to everyone. It is really awesome and encourages those of us who suck but enjoy art to just explore what we like and have fun.
When your canvas gets too loose, you can actually paint the back of it with (preferably white and liquid acrylic) paint, normally it's tightening the canvas again. At least it worked for me every time :)
I gotta remember this! Im getting back to oils after three decades (or more), last used them as a kid with granpa, acrylics were unknown back then. Thank you so much, I might have a chance now! Or its less taunting at least :)

This was really cool! I love how the oil paint portrait overall looked softer whereas the oil sticks portrait looked a bit stronger, sharper maybe. I don't know exactly how to describe art but it felt harsher somehow. It was really interesting to see
@@foxnamedandrea1511 I think the background of the sticks looks much harsher than the paints. Perhaps it's just the colours, but it looks sort of grainier and less muddy.

I really love how the oil stick painting turned out. I like the textures and brush strokes that go with the paint but there is just something about the stick painting that captures my attention more.

@@oosmosmoo quick question, how much prior to starting the painting should you damp the back with water? And approx how damp? Been painting for a while but only recently started using canvas so I'm still unaware of these little tricks 😅
@@Kreyatura I always dampen it before starting the painting, then let it dry. You can also dampen it throughout the process too. Not sure about oils though. Once you are finished use a spray bottle and spray down the loose areas and it should tighten up! Hope that helps.
As a noob in the art world (most of my drawing have come from a standard 2hb pencil on loose leaf paper) I have more recentlyn because of your videos Jazzan been broadening my horizons. I have been using different mediums and learning more and more about the best ways to achieve what I see in my mind to translate to my drawings. Thank you. I wish I had followed you when you were doing your pro artists pack but c'est la vie. Thank you for the inspiration!

I cringe when I saw “Oil sticks” they are the Bane of my existence! All joking aside, I became jaded with them because I was told by my visual art specific high school to buy it, and we were never taught how to use those stupid things (We were told to specifically to buy the Shiva oil sticks I remember), so we wasted money on sticks we weren’t even going to use or learn to use and they were a nightmare to use when I was a high school student. Part of it was due to the dried oil on top to keep it from fully drying out and it *was not explained this was the case*. So I’m going to be honest that I kinda wished you were given these back then so I could have at least learn what they did so I could use them more effectively back then lol.
at the end my dad came in the room and i paused the video when they were side-by-side and he asked "who is that, is that van gogh?" so your wife isn't the only one, jazza 😂

My dad has these oil stick marker sort of things. When I asked him what are these he said they were used to write on machines & now I’m surprised to see that they are made for oil painting 😂
Nice work ! Amazing for a first go with oil sticks. It would be interesting to see where you could take them using them with oil paints, so each could be used for their strength. Oil paints are often all about layering, and people work in them for months. It can take weeks or months for them to dry, depending on how much linseed oil, or other thinner is used, so it’s not a medium to rush.
I have used these sticks before and they lay down the sketchy first layers so easy, then I used them in combination with my palette to mix more colors and apply them to the canvas. This eliminated the stretching of the canvas. If you want the canvas to tighten up you can spray the back with water and let it dry, then the canvas tighten up between coats. I would like to see you work with soft pastels? I have recently started using them and they have been quite a challenge! Let's see how you work with this rather difficult medium!! I suggest a RUclipsr to watch is Alain Picard If you can work in or like his style this is a great accomplishment! So Go Jazza Go!

No. Oil pastels never dry. Once fully dry, paintings done using oil sticks are hard like an oil painting.

When Jazza's "relaxed" oil painting took 1.5 hrs when it would've been a high school project that I need months to do and be not even half as good.

I just paint the back with a thin layer of water. The fibers tighten almost immediately.

Tip I wish I knew: If the canvas has too much give use the stretchers in the back, that’s what they’re for.

I use oil sticks all the time in my art. It is genuinly my favorite medium to use when I create mixed media.
Oil-based media are definitely my favorites. I adore oil paint and oil pastels, and I've been dying to try oil sticks.

Oil pastel use an oil type that doesn't dry ever.
Oil paint sticks made with different oils so dry over time.
