Mr Blomberg is truly a magnificent drummer. Bringing such creative jazzy style of playing drums into black metal is unique. There's a clear musicality in his playing that complements the rhythmic functionality in a very balanced, yet remarkable way.
this dude is just a legend on his own.. i love that he can be so versatile.. i mean... Mayhem, Covenant/Kovenant, Arcturus, Dimmu borgir, Winds... and still being creative, and most importantly he's totaly musical.. not just playing some standards beats like most drummers... there are times i am thinking "how lese this song could be played in terms of drums?" and actualy this guy is never OVER or UNDER playing.. every hit, every move, every single thing he does has actually some meaning and adds something to the song in it's way... unfortunately there are no many videos of him playing, and it's actually delightful watching him playing the drums....

Right? And he doesn't beat the crap out of them either. I noticed that right away when I saw him with Mayhem last year. He's definitely a seasoned pro.

If I had a chance to ask him a question that will be one for him !! What truly happened that night !! Man I remember CBGBs Owner himself coming down and cursing the 💩out on them !! After like 90 minutes of waiting they finally came out. I'll never forget it There's a video flying around at one point MANIAC says We got a special guest tonight !! And I shout at him ATTILA ATTILA COME OUT ! He got Mad and said !! NOOO NO ATTILA TONIGHT !!! LOLOL.. Lots of people started laughing !! And I was really drunk at the time !! I've been listening to Hellhammer drumming in Mayhem and Arcturus, all I can say is that he is one of the best drummers in this world, his drumming is very artistic, also fast. His cymbal work is fantastic and has no comparison in Black Metal (hello kiddy style and all), its delicious listening to him.
this song blew me away when i heard it about 17 years ago. The drums are something else then you find out its a black metal guy. Who says they can't shred.
As much as I don't really like his drumming/Kit tone I think his playing on The sham Mirrors, Grand declaration of war, and absolutely La Masquerade where all surprisingly creative, must have been something in the water for a few years.
Watch his interview on Drum Talk, he explains why, back then him and other members had a lot of inspiration for creating new stuff. Himself in particular had a lot of ideas about playing unorthodox stuff on the drums, plus his notorious jazz versatility. He says that going forward it's becoming more difficult since a lot of stuff has been done already, and you can't just repeat yourself or even improve on it. Coming out with new, groundbreaking material is harder these days.

Barker and Hellhammer the absolute kings of black metal drumming! Any new comer should go listen to Nexus Polaris from Covenant and I Sorte Diaboli from Dimmu Borgir and then you'll know right there and then the caliber of this living legend!

I've been listening to Hellhammer drumming in Mayhem and Arcturus, all I can say is that he is one of the best drummers in this world, his drumming is very artistic, also fast. His cymbal work is fantastic and has no comparison in Black Metal (hello kiddy style and all), its delicious listening to him.
