It looks like you're going to be the go-to guy for multi-tools. Your vids are experience-based, info-packed, and not filled with fluff or hemming and hawing. 👌👍
Craig Mooring Well thank you sir. I appreciate that very much. I’m just a man, so I do have my biases. I do try to limit them though. I try to look at every new tool, regardless of the manufacturer, as objectively as possible. Over the years I felt like reviewers were just pushing products more than giving honest opinions. That is actually why I began reviewing multi tools a little over a year ago. So far, the results have been very positive. I love tools of all kinds and plan on expanding review to eventually try to encompass them all. I appreciate you watching my videos, and most importantly for subscribing.
My girlfriend at the time bought me a wave in 2001. I took it to my first deployment with usmc to Afghanistan in 2004. A Sgt from another platoon "borrowed" it and I never got it back. I harassed him all the way back to the states to replace it and he never did. I have since bought several apparently Gen2. The point is, my original must have been a Gen1. But I don't remember the differences like you are showing...after watching, I could swear I was carrying a Gen2 in fall of 2001...but I'm 40 now so memory isn't what it used to be. GREAT video btw. Earned a a subscriber.
That's a great story, thank you for sharing it. Funny how those Leatherman multi tools grow legs. Thank you for watching, and especially for your subscription.
Just picked up a 1999 original wave off Ebay for 60 bucks! Brand new condition with the sheath! I have quite the collection and am glad to have one again. My 1st one disappeared on me. I have a leatherman mini tool on the way as well. Finally! Thanks for the video!
Finally found this video after being confused by others. Too many were doing comparisons that included after market mods. Your video is straight to the point, and well informed. Thank you.
I remember as a kid using my dad's to do things and many times braking nails trying to get out the tools. Was great to see the nail pulls added when I got my own thanks for the video.
gave my 1st gen to my dad, it had a half knife that i used as a pry bar to open my daughter's door haha... i have gen2 as well... then jumped to Surge and Super tool 300 as well as the core... awesome
Thanks! I am trying to rebuild mine. I lost the bit for the screw driver and the smaller one used on fine screws when I was serving. I can’t say enough of the times this tool got me and my squad out of a jam. Thank you for your informative video.
Very interesting, especially highlighting that safety issue with the original one, having a gap where the blade could sneak out into plier handle space and possibly knick your fingers. How the WAVE's design has evolved. Great video 👍
I found my 1st gen Leatherman Wave, with the case, at the Goodwill outlet store in a bin. Not bent, no broken blades, etc. Since everything at that outlet store sells by the pound, I think I paid about $1 for it.
just to note one other small difference between the 2nd and 3rd generation is the scissors change again if you look at the size of the leaver it's smaller on the 3rd generation making dig into your thumb more when cutting!, just a little thing to note
Great info - Thanks for taking the time and for the thorough comparison. I carried the first gen for 8+ years in the service. When it broke, I bought the new Wave, and subsequent Rebar, Charge, ST300, etc. Still want the old original wave, so I'm sending it off next week to see if they'll fix it up.
Foget Abouteh It fell off an aircraft maintenance stand about 12 feet to the concrete. The serrated blade broke. They replaced the blade, cleaned and touched up all the worn parts and sent it back in 7 days. Top notch customer care. Never a doubt from Leatherman.
I see that a lot of improvements have been made since I bought the original in 1998; but at Costco, this thing cost around $80. I have no idea what the newest one costs, but the original has served me very well and continues to do so. I can't see replacing it at those prices. What do you think?
Thanks again, Ben. When I bought my Wave 10+ years ago, I thought it was the latest and greatest. I was right about it being the greatest .As to the "latest" part, I was off by 12 years.
I appreciate this. An original Wave has been my EDC for 20 years. I was debating going to a Wave+ or Surge but with the review don't see a solid reason for my use. I may get the Surge and bits to augment the tool kit on my motorcycle - it's my daily driver and I use it for trips and vacations. It has an OEM tool kit that I wonder if it was someone's idea of a joke. I'm a former dairy farm kid who got all of the field work so appreciate the meaning of "field repair tools.") I'm not going Surge for EDC because I think I'd be unhappy with the extra weight on my belt.
I know quite a few people that will keep the Surge in the glovebox as a car tool. It can be quite heavy to carry for most people. The only thing I don’t like about the original Wave is that the inner tools don’t lock in place. I carried one for many years, and got plenty of use out of it though. Great multi tool that I think has just gotten better over the years.
I won't disagree with the criticism. Mine happened to be just the right tension/friction that the inner tools weren't too hard to open (though by no means easy) and this seemed to help keep the lack of positive lock from being a problem in my use. I've definitely seen others that were more or less stiff and got into being difficult to use on one or the other side.
Really detailed review, you should be working for Leatherman. Thanks for video , I have wondered about the differences in Waves . I have owned and enjoyed my original for years and Leatherman fixed it for free Once. After the video, I am happy to have the original , I do not like parts that can be detached and lost. Leatherman is a true stand up company.
I just purchased a 1st gen wave from a hawkshop for 60 Canadian. The blade was broken and the pliers were wobbly. Its has 2 years of warrentee left. I sent it into Leatherman and they are hooking me up with a new blade and new plier head.
Very detailed look at all 3 models, you did a really good job of this. I too, need to find a 1st Generation Wave for my collection. The thing i like most about the 1st Gen, compared to the other 2 Gens, are that all the tools are on it. By that i mean, it doesn't have/require any Bit Kits and/or Bit Extender. Its all there. So its a simple tool that you grab n' go. Even though the Wave+ is my favorite of the 3, i do like the simplicity of the Gen 1. I am in search of a good Leatherman multitool to get my Wife as her first. Something simple, that she doesn't need to remember to keep track of any accessories. Its between the Gen 1 Wave, or the Rebar. I like the ease of access that the Wave has to offer, but im leaning more towards the Rebar, because of the fact that all the tools lock, and i want that safety feature for her. Both would be great options though of course. Long comment lol.
Thanks, I appreciate the compliment. Honestly, I think if you want to get your wife a multi tool, the Rebar is an excellent choice. I get what you're saying about not having to keep up with extra accessories. Looking for a tool that is grab and go, and I think the Rebar fits that bill. It depends on what she likes. I actually think the Wingman is an excellent choice for light carry. It has a fairly capable tool set, it's light weight, and it's spring loaded. That feature makes it a great choice for light tasks. In my case, I bought my wife a Wave a couple of years ago for her birthday. A couple of months ago I leant her my Surge for something we were doing around the house. She looked at me and asked my why I didn't get her that one instead. Long story short, I had to buy another Surge. So I guess it depends on the woman. In a couple of years my daughters will be teenagers and I want them to have a multi tool that they will actually use. I am leaning towards the Wingman for them because of the scissors and spring action pliers. I wish they would put a standard blade in it though, I don't care for that half serrated blade. Best of luck on your decision, and thanks again for watching.
@@txtoolcrib The Wingman is actually a very good idea. The spring-loaded pliers and scissors are something she will definitely like! Plus, she has real small hands, so the spring-loaded option is probably a a big deal for her. Thanks for that! And thats a funny story about your wife. Something similar happened with my wife and my Wave, she likes to use the diamond file on her nails all the time haha, but she ends up giving it back.
Despite the narrower main blades of the original version, when a deer accident on a mountain highway led to a big portion of the front quarter and bumper being pulled under the tire when moving, I remembered the Wave saw attachment it took only minuites to remove the damaged body piece to continue the trip - something I couldn't pull off by hand. So, while I appreciate seeing the improvements in newer versions, I was glad that the first version - which I keep in the car for such emergencies - was fully capable of doing the job I needed. Those tools are stiff as heck to open up, though.
My father gave me my first blade/multitool ever, it's was the first gen, he found it's as a kid while he and his dad were hiking, he used it for a long time and then gave it too me, I hope someday to give it to my child. If I ever have one
The screws or exterior blades are slightly angled to reduce blockiness . I hardly can notice tbh but it’s there . I can tell from the shadow line . Makes sense too , great design imo .
Many thanks for this video. I have a few leathermen tools and have today broken the main blade on what I now know to be is a gen 1 Wave. Do you know any shop in the US that would be prepared to post a replacement to the UK? I cant find this in the uk and have spent a fair bit of time on google trying to do so. Thanks in advance Mark
I'm still a user and big fan of the Gen 1. I prefer the more substantial screwdrivers instead of the smaller interchangeable versions. Although I do wish the ruler markings were on the Gen 1 handle. Great rundown video!
greetings from norway excellent comparison. might i add the fact that the gen1 pliers when open are held in that position by a spring in the frame and not ''friction' like the new gen's just a minor detail. ps make more videos plz:D
Mark Stene I wasn’t aware of that. Thank you for pointing that out. Now I’m going to have to investigate that further. Greetings from Texas, USA. It’s fascinating to me how people from all over the world connect with each other this day and age. I appreciate that you took the time to watch my video and for commenting. I do plan to devote more time, as work allows, to making more videos.
Always love these "evolution of" videos but seeing Leatherman somehow fitting those Victorinox profile scissors inside the first generation Wave is unbelievable.
I have the original Wave, and always thought I was missing out because of the 2nd and 3rd generations features. After seeing your side by side discussion, I think I am happy with keeping it now. I like my Charge TTI and carry it daily, but keep my wave in my range bag and don't require the bit changer function anyway. Great videos. thank you for your hard work and excellent videos!
I rarely use the scissors on my Wave. Ive got a teeny pair on my mini swiss army knife and a full-sized foldup pair of Fiskars in my backpack. Looks like its time to upgrade from my Original!
I have two of them with the big scissors. I do like third generation, but because of the scissors I would not buy it even though the pliers are better (replaceable cutters). Thank you for such a good review.
I modded a Wave plus to be a Wave A+. Mods include a 154 cm blade, cut hook serrated blade, tweezers, and clip mounted for left side carry, a slightly rounded saw back( for better ergos), and two PB washers on the blades. removing the lanyard loop made the clip swappable, much better PE blade ergos. The pieces de resistance is the *Tim Leatherman signed* serrated blade 7/13/13.
Very informative. Good job!👍...With the new magnetic FREE line of multi-tools (P2 & P4) coming out in April, I'm wondering if Leatherman will continue making or upgrading the Wave or just leave it the way it is and concentrate in the new models🙄
Rien que la vérité Thank you. That’s a good question. My thinking is that they are going to leave the Wave as is for a few years while they concentrate on the new Free architecture. Time will tell. I just got the new Free tools ordered this evening and will be going over their capabilities and testing them out soon.
@@txtoolcrib Looking forward to the review of your Free series👍... For me (P4): Pros - new 'architecture' - all outside opening tools - easy access tools - less handle splay - fiddle factor! Cons - size and shape of interior tools - cost
I bought the wave in 1999 and still carry it when needed to this day in 2021. When I really need to do work I take my Surge. Camping…the Wave all the way.
Looking at the top my first gen Wave I do see 2 straight grooves on each leg where the fingers of some springy things go, instead of the rounded ends in de video. A kind of brake I think but no locking action of the blades as in the newer generations. So it seems a first-and-a-half generation. When I compare the finish of the Wave it is waaaay beyond the finish of my latest Charge+ which is only different from the newer Waves in the 154CM metal of the main blade and the cutting hook in the serrated blade. The latter looks like the lot is sand-blasted with the pliers crudely brushed where the Wave is entirely smoothly brushed or satinized with bead-blasted parts. Not sure which one I like better but the Wave makes a very satisfying spring assisted snap when closing which the Charge doesn't show so far.
I like the smaller scissors in the gen 2. Old ones were still too small for any real jobs but the new, small, is better in getting tiny snipping tasks. IMHO
13:26 My experience plays out differently. I have three different Leatherman Waves of the gen 2 variety that I keep in different places and two/thirds of them have the finer teeth. I switch back and forth on which I prefer.
Great review, I still love my original wave, the only reason I went to a skeletool was because the original wave didn't have a pocket clip :( Just purchased the Free P2 and it is amazing!
Chris Davis Thank you. I remember when the first Wave came out. There was nothing like it, not even from Leatherman’s other multi tools. It was my favorite EDC item for many, many years.
You forgot the plier rests that is supposed to keep the end of the pliers from catching on the inside tools. On Gen 1there are none as they are not neccessary . Early Gen2 had the flap type which once the tool loosened up through frequent use, tended to slam harder against the flap. Metal fatigue occurs and the flap occasionally breaks causing the end of the plier to catch on the inside tools. Later Gen2 and Gen3 such as the ones in your vid have sturdier square rests that can withstand slamming once the tool loosens up. It will be interesting to see the innovative engineering on the Leatherman Frees when they come out!
I'm glad you brought up the loss of plier real estate, you seem to be the only reviewer who (like me) cares about that! One thing you didn't cover though was the old pliers open wider than the newer ones. I finally caved and bought a new one this week and the first time I tried to use the pliers (to get a screw top off of a really stuck bottle), but the pliers for the Wave+ wouldn't fit around the cap. However, the old Wave's did. It definitely wasn't the proper application for the tool but disappointing nevertheless. Anyways, you have a fantastic channel, I hope your subscriber count grows to match the quality of your videos!
It sounds as though you may have a faulty tool. I would get in touch with Leatherman customer service to see about getting it repaired or exchanged. The pliers will often times be a bit stiff initially, but they will break in fairly nicely over the course of about a year or so of use. It sounds like yours may be a bit harder to open than should be expected.
WOAH! wait a minute! This guy is obviously a Leatherman freak. That appears to be the carbon fiber Skeletool with the S30V blade!....EDIT, 154cm...... Thats the one i want. I could be wrong, but, it is unlikely. I am a Leatherman freak. I have an awesome collection including the Wave tools in all 3 generations, as well as a Crunch, multiple Micras, Surge, Charge ALX (the one with 2 screwdriver slots), Charge TTI, Charge Plus TTI (quite expensive the Charge tools), MUT, I also have the 2 versions of the add on screwdriver adapters, the one for Wave, and for original PST (both new in package, never used). And my crowning jewel, an original PST, Marlboro miles edition, new in original box, never used, with new leather sheath, never used. IO also have a dozen other multi tools and collectible high end knives, But the Leathermans are my favorites. And i always carry one on me.
I tell anyone who asks me about multi tools if you’re not a collector and you’re looking for a tool that can handle just about anything that will come up throughout your day to just buy the Surge. Yes it’s heavier but you’re hip carrying it and really won’t notice the weight. At least I don’t notice it. I collect and use multi tools out of all the brands and all the leather man styles anything leather man will be better but the best out of the best would be the Surge. It is the true king of multi tools
I have the first and second generation but I prefer the first gen, mostly because it is narrower and lighter than gen 2. I don't like the removeable bits because if it can be removed it can be lost. I've had the gen 1 for 22 years and it has never let me down.
Now I use Charge tti+ but before used Wave second generation and I think Wave most comfortable Leatherman off all. P.S Latherman Wave the most selling compact tool in the world.
I got an original today . Do they still sell them ? It’s in mint condition like yours . Somebody moved on and left it at an apartment . I ll bet he had it for many years . I tried to contact him . He left so much behind
The only thing I don't like on the Wave is the scissors. I prefer the Victorinox scissors by far. All other tools are great, especially the can opener. The Leatherman can opener is better than its competitor Victorinox.
I love Victorinox scissors too and think they are the best, but at my first generation Wave scissors are good too. Not like Vic., but still good. And I am very very picky about scissors
I have the original wave, the original Swisstool and the Swisstool X on the wave the scissors are fantastic! Just as good as Victorinox and has a better spring mechanism. I’ve used the original wave everyday for 21yrs and has never let me down ever!! due to its lack of an awl I carry a Farmer for backup but for me Tim Leatherman got it so right with the first wave I looked no further.. perfect!
Try the used market, sometimes pawn shops have a good price on new or newer tools. I bought a black oxide NIB Rebar for 50.00, MSRP is 70.00. it was tight at first some oil and breaking in made it a little looser.
I have the original one I got it from trading some kid who’s step dad owned it who left a bag of Cheetos for it and it still looks like new this was back in 2013 and I’ve been using it for my edc ever since
@@txtoolcrib they're pretty good at listening to their customers, but my voice alone isn't loud enough. I think their RnD is pretty tied up in this new magnet Free thing to bother with us old hats that love the 20yr old stuff...
noway05 guinness we haven’t reached old yet have we? Lol. Just yesterday I was ranting on about something and my wife looks at me and says (in her old man voice) “Get off my lawn!”. She think she’s funny sometimes.
Am I the only one who finds the first gen Wave a little flimsy when folded? Fine when open and using the pliers. I much prefer the Charge that feels more sturdy.
Well, when it comes to multi tools, it is a matter of opinion as to which is better. Personally, I believe the later generations are a bit better because they offer inside locking tools and the bit exchanger. Original Wave was a great multi tool though, no doubt.

Absolutely, you're very welcome. I really like the Wingman a lot. I think it is probably my favorite light duty MT.
A secondary use for the OG Wave tool, a car door lock pick. The long medium flat driver.
Great video! :D
Thank you sir.
I have owned all three , you taught me a lot !
Well that is good to know.
Thank you very much. I got many, many years use out of the first generation.
First gen is so much skinnier - fits in my tight pants so much better!
Nice review 👍
PapaWheelie Thanks
greetings from norway
excellent comparison. might i add the fact that the gen1 pliers when open are held in that position by a spring in the frame
and not ''friction' like the new gen's just a minor detail.
ps make more videos plz:D
Thank you sir, that is very much appreciated.
You're welcome. Thank you for watching.
I love this.
Gen 1 for me. I like the glossy finish of the stainless steel on the older versions, plus "USA" is engraved on the pliers.
It’s a good looking multi tool.
Thanx!
are the inner tools of the original wave interchangeable with those of the new wave? thanks
The lock spring also has a closed pliers post. OG Wave the pliers slid on the tools when closing.
Very observant.
Newest mod Free P4 wire cutters, using black screws.
The best mod is to replace the serrated blade with a scalpel
For me (P4):
Pros
- new 'architecture'
- all outside opening tools
- easy access tools
- less handle splay
- fiddle factor!
Cons
- size and shape of interior tools
- cost
I think I like the second generation Wave the best.
Still rocking my og wave I bought in 1998. Wanting to upgrade .thinking rebar.
Maybe you could try to see if you can mod the 2nd Gen Wave so that you replace those scissors with that of the 1st Gen Wave scissors?
I need a clip for this thing . Defintely getting a clip . I ve had a cheapo walmart one and it’s wasn’t horrible but this so much better built imo .
Great review, I still love my original wave, the only reason I went to a skeletool was because the original wave didn't have a pocket clip :(
Just purchased the Free P2 and it is amazing!
Chris Davis Thank you. I remember when the first Wave came out. There was nothing like it, not even from Leatherman’s other multi tools. It was my favorite EDC item for many, many years.
Is thre somebody tried to make clip on original wave ??
Craig Mosolowski That is a very good eye, I did forget to mention the plier rests. Thank you for pointing that out.
I have a 1st Gen Wave, any idea if I can swap out the pliers from a Gen 3?
TIA
Good stuff. Leatherman Free upcoming?
Michael Escay FREE video is uploading as I type this.
@@txtoolcrib awesome. Watching it now
The Gen three has an added crimper like in the surge.
Did I forget to mention it in this video? My bad. I miss things sometimes.
Still rocking my gen 1 wave. Broke the tip off the smallest flathead but other than that it's in great shape.
I have a lot of fond memories of that first gen.
@@txtoolcrib I use these scissors quite a bit. Never realized the newer ones were so teeny!
They definitely leave a little bit to be desired don’t they? Lol
Watching reviews after I already order one on Amazon
That first gen wave is missing the jimping thats on my one. Which is how I know with out looking which blade I’m selecting.
owned mine original one for 20 some years :) And Still Like New
I have new Wave about 3 month and pliers is very strong and bad to use quickly. I use lubricant but same thing. What can I do else?
It sounds as though you may have a faulty tool. I would get in touch with Leatherman customer service to see about getting it repaired or exchanged. The pliers will often times be a bit stiff initially, but they will break in fairly nicely over the course of about a year or so of use. It sounds like yours may be a bit harder to open than should be expected.
@@txtoolcrib thanks for atention
Can you mount a pocket clip on the gen 1? If not that’s a deal breaker for me
No, it doesn’t have provisions for a pocket clip.
WOAH! wait a minute!
Quite a collection.
Happen to know if current clip fits first gen waves?
It does not. The clip is designed to work with the tool lock mechanism.
I have the first and second generation but I prefer the first gen, mostly because it is narrower and lighter than gen 2. I don't like the removeable bits because if it can be removed it can be lost. I've had the gen 1 for 22 years and it has never let me down.
The first gen was pretty slim, made for a nice carry.
Now I use Charge tti+
but before used Wave second generation and I think Wave most comfortable Leatherman off all.
P.S Latherman Wave the most selling compact tool in the world.
I just picked up the 1st gen for 60 dollars Canadian with a broken tip on the blade. Ill send it in to get fixed.
I got an original today . Do they still sell them ? It’s in mint condition like yours . Somebody moved on and left it at an apartment . I ll bet he had it for many years . I tried to contact him . He left so much behind
it's very very nice and very strong plier l hope to get it but how?
The only thing I don't like on the Wave is the scissors. I prefer the Victorinox scissors by far. All other tools are great, especially the can opener. The Leatherman can opener is better than its competitor Victorinox.
Tim Summers I tend to agree with that statement. The scissors on the Wave, while capable, are a bit small for my taste.
I’ve used the original wave everyday for 21yrs and has never let me down ever!! due to its lack of an awl I carry a Farmer for backup but for me Tim Leatherman got it so right with the first wave I looked no further.. perfect!
Using a knife as a pointer has to be the most Texas thing I've seen.
Lol, yeah.
I hope to work for the American Leather man it's ah American company and I love it is wonderful industries
I agree, they are pretty cool. A lot of engineering goes into these types of tools as well.
I love my 1st gen Wave, see no reason to trade up to gen 3!
You forgot to mention that the plyer head on first generation was stamped USA
2nd gen for the win
Man, I can't seem to let go of 100 bucks and all you reviewers have multiple tools.
It is an expensive habit.
Try the used market, sometimes pawn shops have a good price on new or newer tools. I bought a black oxide NIB Rebar for 50.00, MSRP is 70.00. it was tight at first some oil and breaking in made it a little looser.
@@txtoolcrib : no such thing as an inexpensive habit... 😂. Great vid! Very informative.
Original wave stil looks better than the new ones no tools to lose
I have the original one I got it from trading some kid who’s step dad owned it who left a bag of Cheetos for it and it still looks like new this was back in 2013 and I’ve been using it for my edc ever since
Lol. Good deal
Thank you for this review. I have been running the gen 2 for about six years. Please feel free to check out my own review on my channel.
Why hasn't Leatherman made a RATCHET bit extension?!!
That would be a great accessory. I would be first in line to buy it.
I always felt it was pretty solid. The first version is a bit on the flimsy side.
For me i think the 2nd generation is better than the 3rd gen. Pliers of 2nd gen is much sturdy than the 3rd
The original wave was better!!
Well, when it comes to multi tools, it is a matter of opinion as to which is better. Personally, I believe the later generations are a bit better because they offer inside locking tools and the bit exchanger. Original Wave was a great multi tool though, no doubt.
Am I the only one who cringes every time someone says "mult-eye" tool rather than simply "mult e" ?
