    I have no hatred for Discovery or anything, but I get annoyed when they get rid of unique characters. Especially when it's right when they get their own episode. I've never seen Lost but heard they did that constantly. Saru is pretty much the only alien/non-human looking character with any development.

    • @zsoltwetterhan1623
      @zsoltwetterhan1623 3 года назад +1

      Well, we get a binary character for a regular cast so...there is your uniqueness...lol

    • @atanvardo5730
      @atanvardo5730 3 года назад +2

      Agreed. I think they failed for keeping Nhan in the background and not allowing her some development. As a Barzan, she was a unique character. Perhaps the only Barzan to serve in the Star Fleet (like Saru was the only Kelpien). Also, the Barzan are an interesting alien race which was not properly explored yet, and Nhan was a perfect chance for this to be done. We already had a fair share of Vulcans and Klingons, but the Barzan remain unexplored. Although she is a background character, she has a fanbase. A small but loyal fanbase. But, even as a background character, she had more dialogue scenes than any other bridge character, except for Saru and Micheal, of course (edit: and the other Captains, too).

      And, to be honest, all in all, I like this spin-off, more than i like the older ones, and even more than the original series. All of them are cool, but I think Discovery has a more dramatic narrative. It has its flaws, too.

      "Season 4" LMAO. There isn't going to be a season 4 bud. The only reason there's a season 2 let alone 3 is because of NetFlix's contract that they couldn't get out of. STD has no substantive audience because they burnt the longtime Trek fans with this abortion of a ST series.

      @@matthewbalsinger3238 ROFL!!! *Now* , with the end of season 3, because the last episode gave an apparent signal that the show may have come to an end, no one needs to be very smart to think that _maybe_ there won't be a season 4... (and not that there _won't_ be a seson 4). But two months ago, when our friend above wrote his comment, nobody in their right mind could say ST:D's wasn't going to have a season 4, and anyone who had predicted this would have taken it out of their ass! Entering its 3rd season *is* a sign of success for a renewed show. Other spin-offs were announced, what indicates that Discovery is successful enough to justify the investiment in the coninuation of the franchise. In general, Discovery is held high in critics, and this is for sure an indicator of success. And its audience hitting 7 million is more than a sign of sucess. And, more than just successful, it looks like Discovery is the world's most popular streaming show: screenrant.com/star-trek-discovery-ratings-most-popular-streaming-show/
      Despite the fact that, for many or maybe most of ST:D's audience, things only started to get really going on season 3, this also happened to The Next Generation, which is one of the most beloved of ST series ever, if not the most.
      Finally, it *does seem* there will be a 4th season: www.cinemablend.com/television/2557031/star-trek-discovery-officially-renewed-for-season-4-and-theres-more-good-news

      @@atanvardo5730 Also: The market when the other Treks existed is COMPLETELY different than the market STD is in. STD must HOLD onto it's limited fan base, it isn't likely to grow because of the requirement to subscribe. Whereas TNG and the other Treks were a syndicated program on freely broadcasted television.
      TOS gained it's popularity WHEN it was in syndication, and TNG GAINED audience and support when it had begun to flesh itself out in season 3.
      There is NO mechanism for either to occur for STD. Hell the fact that CBS-ALL ACCESS has already had to resort to rebranding itself as Paramount+ is evidence ALONE that STD and ST:Picard are terrible shows with barely an audience.
      They were created on artificial numbers made to justify their existence, rather than the numbers generating their existence.
      STD is no TNG, and it never will be. It is not a beloved franchise (by anyone) and will not be remembered 20-years from now...unlike TNG.
      Stop defending bad Trek.

But even if they didn't, this does not change the fact that Rachael (and Sonequa, also) is such a talented actress... Far too talented for her character to have been kept on the background, it must be said, despite that it may have been not very difficult for them to cry for real, as that was Nhan's goodbye scene (although it remains quite open, for me), and Rachael enjoyed very much playing her. She and the other cast members had a very good time together and they even sang a farewell song to her. I can't remember the song, but it was kind of a pun with Nhan's name.

Among all background characters so far, Nhan had the greatest potential, in my opinion (and she is such an eye-candy, let it be said...). And I think this, and the fact that Rachael Ancheril, who plays her, is extremely talented, are the reasons why Nhan was given more dialogue scenes than all other bridge characters except for Michael and the Captains (Saru, Georgiou, Lorca and Pike). Ash Tyler and Airiam were also cut-off from the show shortly after they began to have some development. But at least Airiam is back, in a certain way... Sarah Mitch who played her in the 1st season, is now playing Lieutenant Nilsson. In the 2nd season, Airiam was played by Hannah Cheeseman mainly because, according to behind-the-scenes romours, Sarah had adverse reactions to Airiam's make-up.

    • @atanvardo5730
      @atanvardo5730 3 года назад +1

      I think that, although Michael was certainly not as close friends with Nhan as she is with Saru or Tilly for example, they are supposed to be friends to some extent; not just colleagues who served on the same ship. Specially because they both were bridge officers and, thus, spent a lot of time together (this is not a determinant, but it surely helps friendship relations to be formed). Also, we cannot expect the series to show us each and every interaction the characters certainly have on their daily lives aboard the Discovery when they are not on their duty shift, and even when they are. These daily interactions are understood, as well as any frienship that may result from them (again, specially when we are speaking of two characters who served on the bridge). Even if we don't take this in consideration, I see no problem with the "goodbye to Nhan" scene, as it would be very well representing how Nhan admired and liked Michael and, even if they were not exactly friends, they would miss each other. What I don't like in ST: Discovery is how they don't allow promising characters to develop and after some time they remove those characters from the show. It happend not only to Nhan, but also to Ash Tyler and Airiam. The case of Nhan is even worse, because the actress who plays her (Rachael Ancheril) is extremely talented. Nhan should not have been kept on the background like she was, and utterly removed. She should have stayed and have been allowed some development.
