      I am no fan of what most of McCain’s policies were, but I respect the hell out of him for living and dying as a principled and patriotic man.
      As for his 2008 campaign, his VP pick constantly dragged him down, he did not campaign well when the Great Recession hit, and the Republican Party had to contend with their general unpopularity due to Bush’s horrible approval ratings and the splintering factions within the Republican base. Those were just the internal problems with his campaign. We shouldn’t neglect that he was also having a race against a very strong candidate-Obama.

      @@Kyle_Schaff Obama's campaign used negative attacks against McCain alluding to McCain's decaying appearance. And Obama skillfully combined that with "Hope and Change." A two-pronged approach. Note that Trump used negative attacks against his opponents and combined them with "Make America Great Again," a very similar approach.

      Every campaign uses a mix of positive and negative ads. Dukakis ran ads questioning if a twice elected senator was fit for the office of the Presidency and other ads depicting the Bush campaign as a product. The only difference between the two campaigns use of negative ads is that Bush’s were more effective at influencing a portion of the electorate.

    I was a baby during the campaign and my views are more on the conservative side, but there was a lot more than just the tank ad that sunk Dukakis
    1. The Democrats having trouble finding a frontrunner after Gary Hart got KO'd by the Donna Rice sex scandal and then the plagiarism scandal torpedoed Joe Biden (for all the talk Dukakis made early in the video, his campaign manager was the guy who leaked the video that sparked that scandal)
    2. 5 candidates won at least one contest (Dukakis, Jesse Jackson, Al Gore, Dick Gephardt and Paul Simon); and all of them except Simon won multiple contests.
    3. Jesse Jackson hanging around even after Dukakis locked up the delegates needed for the nomination in the belief that as the runner-up he was entitled to the Vice-Presidential spot.
    4. Dukakis being extremely slow to respond to the Bush campaign ads (maybe some overconfidence had set in following the Dukakis campaign getting the 17 point lead after the convention)
    5. Finally, there was a much bigger defining moment that probably finished Dukakis off for good, and that was his absolutely lackluster answer to CNN's Bernard Shaw during the opening question of the final debate

      I think it might have been to do with the prospect of a third republican term when Reagan’s approval ratings weren’t actually *that* high at the time. Voters usually want change at first, I guess they just quickly realised that the Dukakis kind wasn’t very appealing.
      But I wouldn’t know for sure, I wasn’t alive at the time…

    • @Maestrohbill
      @Maestrohbill Год назад +6

      I was alive and in college so let me try to explain. The Dems had a number of advantages back then that boosted Dukakis.
      1) out of power 8 years
      2) voters at state level far more aligned with the Ds back then
      3) Reagan sliding in polls in 1987 as the fallout from Iran-Contra kept coming forth daily
      And Dukakis had other things helping him:
      1) Bush effectively ended the GOP race on March 8 while Dukakis got free coverage beating Jesse Jackson every Tuesday for 2 months
      2) because the Dem primary voters were as terrified of Jesse getting the nomination guaranteeing they lost, Dukakis didn’t have to show how liberal he actually was at the time
      In late May, Dukakis was actually 20 points ahead so the Bush campaign calculated they’d go on the attack the day Dukakis clinched (June 9 in CA) and cut into his lead. Three weeks of attacks lowered the Dukakis lead to about 9.
      Also - Dukakis went to ground from June 9 until the Convention, making it easier for Bush to nail him every day.
      Then the first intro many folks had to Dukakis was an attack laden DNC led by Ann Richards and Ted Kennedy.
      So the 17-point lead was both a snapshot in time plus an illusion; most folks saying they were for Dukakis didn’t know the first thing about what his vision was, they just wanted a change and many hated Bush.
      By October, Bush had the voters fearing Dukakis more than him.

    • @broadstreet21
      @broadstreet21 Год назад +1

      @@Maestrohbill Well okay. Those first three factors could sway the tide in the Democrats' favor, except that the state level democrats could have had as much to do with the character and personalities of the gubernatorial candidates as well as policy. Reagan did survive a terrible scandal, but by July 1988, when Dukakis posted that big lead, Reagan had long since confessed and solved the crisis.
      Even if voters wanted change, without knowing much about Dukakis' policy, he still lacked the charisma of Bush, never mind Reagan. Unfathomable he could get any attention, never mind a major lead in the poll.
      And as for Bush, those who hated him, did they not vote for him as vice president? And if Reagan had earned forgiveness over the Iran-Contra, had the country rolling on the right path, didn't most voters want a third term for him (in which case, they'd vote Bush)?

      What you say isn’t incorrect from a different time but Bush was called a “wimp” based on his patrician manners. Also, Ollie North and John Poindexter were awaiting trial, so Reagan hadn’t really put Iran-Contra fully in the past. And nobody votes for VP anyway (not enough). But Dukakis leading was largely an illusion because Bush had high negatives and the voters didn’t really know much about Dukakis.

He had literally zero personal magnetism and came across as a repellent jerk. Go back and watch those debates. He regularly cut off mediator questions, rudely argued the basic form of the questions, and condescendingly re-phrased the questions in innocuous form. It was abrasive and revolting to watch. By the 2nd debate when I saw he had not changed I realized he was done. Nobody watching him would want to work for or with him, much less see him running the country.

    Even though I believe in the concept of running a clean campaign in politics, if your opponent throws mud at you, you have to throw mud back and counter your foe's accusations with your own provided they're truthful as well as show what you'll do differently from him or her.
    Dukakis was halfhearted with his counterattacks at best while Bush brutally hammered him with verbal attacks on his bad policies and how weak he'd been throughout his political career. Having then President Regean backing Bush certainly made Dukakis's job much harder but Dukakis let himself get punched in the face again and again in his attempt to be a nice clean candidate.

      The photo itself is nothing to hit home about, it's the fact that someone with an image of a squeaky clean liberal riding on a hyper-masculine machine like a tank while looking like a kid on a Disneyland ride just looks ridiculous To make matters worse, Dukakis consistently voted against aggressive defense policies. Top Gun was popular in the 80's and they could've easily used a stunt double on the tank while it's in motion, then have it come to a stop with Dukakis stepping out with his helmet on his side making a comment about Reagan's sci-fi Star Wars while championing a real, tested weapon.
