This works for Linux mint but I believe that should work also for Ubuntu and Debian.
I had to set my sound profile on start up every boot. Thanks to this I don't have to do that anymore. Thank you so much.

Excellent tutorial. I'm going to sit down with a cup of coffee and follow everything presented. when a have 6-hours to spare. Linux Mint 19.2, trying to configure Xonar STX from 2 channel to 5.1. Currently there's no option. I've killed pulse and reloaded alsa. Tried writing to the conf files, but most of the information I tried is a few years old. Thanks for putting up something current.I even tried deleting pulse, not recommended.
My PC always used my Logitech Gaming Headset as default device.
Thanks to you I was able to resolve this issue, thank you so much!
Happy to help :)
Excellent. I've been struggling to get this working for days. Thank you so much.
My issue was a audio profile issue glad its fixed thanks
Good Information!
My issue with Linux Mint 19.1 is when every time my USB DAC is connected upon reboot my (for example) Built-in Analog Audio switches to USB Audio and NOT a big deal but is weird cause Linux Mint 18.3 does not have that problem.
My Headphones are always plugged in so every time my computer boots I hear my Headphones which my DAC is LLOOUUDD!
for my "Built-in Analog Audio" its my Edifier R1280T connected via 3.5mm to RCA (I recommend)
You guys GOTTA try Pulse Effects, Pulse Effects is a LADSPA Plug-in for Pulse Audio Applications - 10 of 5 Stars: I recommend that for Audio Philes!
thanks for sharing!
Softhints - Data, Coding, Automation: I believe on the PLAYBACK tab there is a dropdown at the bottom/right that will show all devices.

thanks for the video man😊
Thanks!
This damn works- I have sound!
Cool :)
Glad to hear that.
I use Zorin OS, and there is no video showing the problem I'm experiencing, when I see something the audio works normally, but out of nowhere it stops and starts making a high-pitched noise and if it's video or music it stops playing.
I have quite recently installed Linux Mint on my MacBook Air and two weeks later on my 2017 iMac. On the MacBook Air everything works perfectly, however on the iMac there is no sound. I was trying everything until I landed here with the written Edition of this video. With the command pacmd list-cards I have then listed the cards with the following result: With index: O the name is: and the active profile is . Then under index: 1 with the name: I can find active profile: and I can also find sinks alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo/#2: I do not know now, what I have to introduce in the long listing of the command: sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa . I am not that much of an expert, that I dare to fill in
Hey Peter,
I think best will be to add new topic in the forum: forums.linuxmint.com/viewforum.php?f=48
This will help solving the issue - information is shared in much better way and there are more experts there.
I will check it as well and try to help if I can.

I was booting up linux mint from the usb and it worked it use to detect my earphones until one day it didn't now it doesn't wanna do it anymore it appears as unplugged does things really breake this easily in Linux? 🤔 Meanwhile i boot up windows and the headphones still are detected
Edit: I tried booting it up from my old PC and it works great it has to be a compatibility issue with my laptop sound drivers Wich is a lot worse than I thought 😢 bc I don't wanna mess with the terminal
@Softhints - Python, Linux, Pandas
Hello I have a weird Issue with my Linux Mint 21.1 Vera
The Issue is:
When I use my Monitor for sound output, then the pace and pitch is sped up and high pitch, when I switch to my Headphones however everything is normal...
This applies to both Internet Media and regular Software like VLC or Media...
I've also tried to use Pavucontrol, but either I'm overseeing something, or something else is the Issue...
Hey,
Sorry for the late reply. Were you able to solve it?
@@softhints
Yeah I managed to solve it... at first I didn't notice, but the resolution was set too high, because I have a 4K schreen...
I reckon this happened automatically, because I installed Linux Mint completely new on my PC... still had the same Issue...
And later by coincidence I started tampering with the Resolution, due to a Video Game I wanted to play and the content inside the schreen was too small to be readable or recognizable, hence the Reason I started tampering with the Resolution....
changed it to 1920 x 1080 and then the sound changed back to normal too...
@@LivingFireShadow Cool.
Glad to hear this.

@@softhints thank you for sharing. The audio is amazing and the video.
Thank you for this video. I have trouble with my game not playing half of it's sounds and the other half is coming out of my monitor through HDMI. This video gives me hope is actually being able to fix it. Thanks again
Finally i fix it
My problem is
I was using ubuntu since long time but today I install linux mint 20. When I restart my device there is an error showing "Minimal bash like line editing is supported "
.. I think device is still boots from ubuntu
Great video. If only linux developers actually gave a toss we would not need to toll the internet for answers like this. Linux still sux.
Yes - I know people who stop using Linux because of similar problems.
Initially can be really annoying and time consuming but once when you have solution - it's much better - at least for me.
Thanks, great.
My problem is my headphone amp works fine but my speakers won't work. I have Audioengine HD3 and they work fine in windows but not at all in Linux. Thankfully my monitor has speakers so if I'm ever in the mood for some crappy audio I can rely on that.
I was dealing with similar problems on friends PC-s. Did you check internet for similar problems like:
bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=229745
I would investigate the problem. I would go for (if you have possibility of course):
* test on another PC with Linux
* play with Pavu control and check what is activate it
* test with different applications - Clementine, VLC etc
@@softhints thank you for replying. Believe it or not, I just got a notification from RUclips that you replied. I've since been able to use my speakers with Mint. I upgraded to kernel 5 (I think?) and installed pulse audio. Don't know which one fixed it, but it's kinda fixed now. If I'm not playing audio the speakers still go to sleep, at which point I have to power them off and on again to get them to output audio again. I'll read what you linked ASAP.
My mint 20.1 (cinnamon) freezes at startup sometimes and I have to hold the power key on my laptop to force shut it down.
Recent logs says:1 Failed to set mode: Blocked through rfkill (0x12)
:2 Error opening PCM device front:0: No such file or directory
First log's sender is "Bluetoothd"
Second is "Pulseaudio"
I think this problem is related to Audio and Bluetooth at startup, any help is appreciated, I'm a newbie :)

Anyone know where the system sound settings are Mint 20.3 *Xfce??? Ive searched in the obvious places but cant find the settings :)
In -older versions- Cinnamon, you were to search for '' Sound '' but in -20.3- Xfce this doesnt work
For Cinnamon 20.3 searching for sound still works for me.
Alternatively you can start the sound from the quick launcher (panel).
If above is not working what do you see in System Settings / Section Hardware ?
@@softhints Glad you mentioned '' Cinnamon ''.I hadn't even thought about what desktop environment I was using.........Im using Xfce, the lightweight version of Mint. Under hardware, the only things listed are:- Bluetooth, Color Profiles, Display, Keyboard, Mouse/Touchpad, Power Management and Removable drives......Perhaps there are no sound themes in Xfce, since its the lightweight version?!! When i install linux mint 20, my HDMI audio output (LED TV monitor) is ok and working. But when run update manager, it disappear from Audio output and only pc built in output audio is working. I wonder what should i do.. Thanks.
Interesting is it only the update manger who is breaking the HDMI audio?
Are there errors in the logs?
No errors at all. HDMI audio just disappears from audio output options.
File "Cinnamin desktop" in the update manager was the culprit and interfering with hdmi audio output. I didnt install this file and everything is ok now.

I have no sound on my Zenbook UX430UQ on 21.3 Mint Cinnamon, Alsamixer says I have a Realtek ALC295 sound card. I went on the Asus Website and it says I installed the latest BIOS, tried to enter a few lines suggested by forums but the best I can get is a few seconds of audio then a quick drop off and back to no sound. Anyone knows what to do?
Best will be to post a question the in LM forum like:

and providing more details like:

and what is the problem with the sound: speakers, headphones, everything .

Thank you, but, doesn't seem to fix SoundBlaster Audity 5 RX. Big problems. Mint 20.2
What are the big problems?
Were you able to solve them?
@@softhints First problem I came across, was that Mint won't access drives plugged into Sata3 on the motherboard. I have about 5 drives in the computer, and so after rearranging where I had drives plugged in, one drive won't work in Linux, and to go back to Windows, I have to change the Bios settings each time. Second problem, the Audigy 5/RX won't play surround sound analog. My speakers are older surround sound, and so, even though the speakers work in digital, it only plays sound in 2.0, rather than the 7.1 that the Creative card offers. Then Linux doesn't recognise the microphone. Apparently it is possible to get Linux to recoginize either the microphone or speakers, but not both at the same time. Neither of these problems have been satisfactorially resolves, even though I have worked out work arounds. But the sound card issue will prevent streaming. Wish I knew enough to be able to program necessary drivers, or whatever would help the issue, but it is certainly beyond my abilities, and I can't seem to find any solutions online. I'm disappointed in Creative, that they have no support whatsoever for Linux.
I should say, I was extremely impressed that Linux was able to work out my graphics, with an open source driver that someone made for NVidea, and Linux automatically detected my multiple screens. I don't think I even had to rearrange the order of my screens. For some reason it just worked out. However, I had to do a quick job of making the middle screen my primary screen. But Linux made that really easy to do, which was a great experience.
@@Holy_Moley
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
I suggest about the sounds problems to post question here: forums.linuxmint.com/viewforum.php?f=48&sid=6128560686b3e89ab5cffd8eb10e9f3d
or in any other place in the LM forum.
I agree that LM is not perfect and has some issues - so far I can find much more good features than problems.
For problems it can take weeks to fix or find an workaround.
What I like most is the freedom of the customization and the community.
Greetings.

My headphones work but the speakers dont. HELP
I've tried all of these things, but nothing worked. The system detects my I interface/soundcard, but I too, get the "Dummy" card message. Erased partition and went back to win11. 😂
The default sound output was ok until I made a mistake somewhere in my panel settings and tried to restore default to avoid the change. Now after this whenever I open or close any windows, I don't hear the sounds that was coming earlier. Except the window sounds, all other sounds are coming without any failure. Only window sounds, open , minimize & closing sounds are not coming! Can you help me to restore them? I am running Linux mint 19.2 Cinnamon 32-bit on my old laptop running AMD CEMPRON PROCESSOR 32 bit, with a swapfile 4Gb on WD SSD. RAM 704 Mb.
How did you restore the defaults? Can you try with different account and check the results ?
@@softhints I could not restore the default. I tried to restore the default size of the panel settings window so that it fits within my laptop screen. It stretched out on both sides and it practically became inaccessible. Since there's no graphics Card inbuilt, I had to resize panel window manually. Seeing things getting worse I had to right click on the icon in the taskbar & found restore default button on the pop up window. I was trying to make every window fit properly & found that only firefox browser window giving no problem. But the other windows are stretching horizontal beyond normal access! No I haven't tried with a different account as a different user on the same machine. After clicking the restore default button, the sound effect vanished so that no sound output from opening, closing or minimising any windows can be heard. The effect vanished from the browser window even. The sound effect vanished only I can use the machine. The startup sound working fine, videos are playing in vlc player without any issues. Except the window effect sounds, all seems to be fine. The window resize issue persists, I have to manually resize upon opening. I have also increased the swapfile, which was completely absent. Mint usually takes 1Gb RAM. But since I don't have that much of RAM, I had to make a swapfile of 4Gb size & made it permanent. Still after all these I could not restore the sound effect of windows.
@@dipankarpal8054 Hi Dipankar,
I think I found what could be the problem here. Can you please:
1) Open Sounds (Sound Settings)
2) Go to Sounds
3) Enable: Closing Windows, Minimizing Windows, Opening new windows
I think now you should have the sounds
