Snaking its way 47 miles through the verdant Adirondacks, the Boquet is the steepest river in New York State (descending 2,700 feet from its source on Dix Mountain to its mouth in Lake Champlain). While there are various theories about the meaning and origin of the river's appellation (a bouquet of flowers among them), it's likely named after Charles Boquet, who was a guide for missionaries and friend to Native Americans in the mid-17th century. It also saw military action as the site of a battle during the War of 1812, but it is perhaps best known today as a a fishing spot for brown trout, smallmouth bass, and Atlantic Salmon.
