  • When purchasing a new or existing home in Texas, it's crucial to be aware of property tax implications. Many families, like a veteran family in this case, have faced foreclosure due to skyrocketing property taxes. It's essential to understand that property taxes are based on the property's value, including improvements, and not just the land. Additionally, applying for a homestead exemption when buying a primary residence is vital, as it can protect you from substantial property tax increases. Some county appraisal districts may not prioritize helping homeowners navigate these issues, and it's suggested that it should be mandatory for all districts to notify property owners about the importance of obtaining a homestead exemption to prevent people from losing their primary homes.

I just sold the last of 3 homes I have owned in Texas. What county was this, and what kind of sheer land mass did they buy to run up those taxes? My house in a major city cost less than $4k a year with vet exemption. Here's a hot tip to the explorer heroes: If you're the only one doing something dramatic, ask more questions first. Use a real estate agent. Don't try to save money by doing deals behind the regulators' backs. And don't pretend you're in the Wild West - sellers like this one are educated and are hiding more from regulators than you ever will.

Even just a email to the homeowners would be helpful. County officials have to do better.
