One thing I like about Tenkaichi 2’s story over 3 is that 2 goes over a lot of smaller things (for example 3 would go straight from Raditz to Nappa, but 2 would have you play Piccolo’s, Tien’s, Krillin’s, etc training in between). Plus the z items, level system, and flying around thing of course

@@cloudx15x I'd disagree. My personal favourite is Tenkaichi 3 but both games offer better experiences in certain areas.
I've had the chance to talk to a lot of people in the competitive Tenkaichi community and there is a lot of agreement that Tenkaichi 2's combat system offers the same or more depth than Tenkaichi 3's due to various movement options available in T2 that are not present in T3. Also small details such as being able to block left, right up and down in Tenkaichi 2 compared to up and down in Tenkaichi 3 mean both games are pretty level.
Tenkaichi 3 is definitely the much more adopted of the two but both casually and competitively both games are neck and neck.
For a good comparison of the two check out the RUclips channel "jagger1407". He'll make you appreciate both games even more and how genius they really are.

Considering they had been using the same music since the 1st Budokai, it was such a huge breath of fresh air to power up Tenkaichi 2 for the 1st time and not be met by the same music I had gotten used to from the last four games. Tenkaichi 2 is easily my favorite soundtrack from any DBZ game out there.
Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not saying the Budokai games had bad music. Far from it, just kinda got old when we were four games in and were getting one or two new tracks at most. Tenkaichi 1 being the worst offender since it had no new tracks at all.

I bought BT2 a couple of years ago and I can say I'm pretty much satisfied with what I got. For a ps2 game it contains a good gameplay, a lot of characters, quite a few extra modes and a long campaign/story. The majority argues that BT3 is better overall and improves most of BT2 aspects but personally I believe (without having played BT3 or being a game expert) that those improvements are not that much different compared to BT2 to justify that there is a huge gap between those two games

    • @noble2786

@@kwylde1978 BT3 is a much better competitive game because the meta combos in BT2 are extremely simplistic and require little timing where BT3 has a much bigger skill gap with both of those aspects. I'd argue it was a huge improvement from a competitive standpoint.

Story mode was good, movement system spot on and combat deep. God I remember getting into teleport battles with my brother that lasted what felt like a minute and we couldn’t land hits on each other.
If it had one flaw is was the joy stick rotation movement you had to do, god wore through so many pads on the ps2 controllers.
Few times my hands would start bleeding while playing against my bro during a beam struggle. Lol

Every one of these Tenkaichi retrospectives neglects to talk about anything gameplay related, I assume that's because they're meant to be casual retrospectives, which is fine, but it's crazy to me that no one talks about the gameplay of these games.
The reason why T2 feels so much better than the first is *because* of the mechanics, the whole combo system was reworked, dashes were improved with more control, sliding speed was increased, cancels were improved, you can't say "the mechanics aren't the biggest thing, but the feel" because the latter is a direct result of the former
Also, I cannot for the life of me call the Raging Blast part of the Tenkaichi series. Tenkaichi always emphasized movement options to the point where there's a damage increase if you attack the opponent from behind. Positioning always has been essential in those games, Raging Blast completely focussed on combos and offense instead. In RB2, your speed is abhorrent, you literally can't steer your flight while ascending/descending, there is no positioning to be considered here, you either combo or you defend.
(Also Tenkaichi 2s cancels are 10x better than RB2 cancels fight me)

One little thing i like in the BT games well to me BT2 is the one i played a lot is when characters get to their 2nd to the last health bar, their stance changes to looking injured like vegeta clutching on his arm. Its really good at showing a desperate battle vibe especially when you finish a fight with little health left almost no other game does this. Plus getting hit by a special attack also destroys some clothing just adds more to the vibe. And yeah the levels showing up during the pre story battle screen kinda adds some intimidation plus the fact that "unwinnable" battles are actually winnable and unlock special story events just motivates you to push your skills to the limit.

I've already written this comment in another video, but whatever. The Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi series is not a continuation of the Budokai series, but a completely separate one. They don't share the same developers (the "Budokai" games were developed by Dimps and the "Budokai Tenkaichi" games were developed by Spike) and the name "Budokai Tenkaichi" was probably chosen to capitalize on the Budokai fans in the west, since these games are named DBZ Sparking! (Tenkaichi), Sparking! Neo (Tenkaichi 2) and Sparking! Meteor (Tenkaichi 3) in Japan while the Budokai games are simply named Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z 2 and Dragon Ball Z 3 in Japan.

BT3 is one of the most underrated games of all times. It had an immense roster with pretty much every character from DBZ, DB and GT as well as the movies and what ifs/specials. Additionally, the story mode was insanely good, to the point where I'm not sure if we have had a better DB story mode since. I found myself drawing out fights to get the interactive buttons to trigger all of the cutscenes and transitions because of how amazing they were.

I think this is a great video, but your opinions feel shorted because you were making this for the video. I only say this because there's a pretty stark difference between Raging Blast and Budokai Tenkaichi 2, let alone 3.
But it was a fun nostalgic romp to see you talking about this and especially dogging on Ultimate Tenkaichi. Even though I played that game more than any other PS3 DBZ game I own.
I think you should eventually do a return to a retrospective because the jump in combat from BT2 to 3 is actually really expansive and a smidge insane, dare I say. I'm even a bit surprised you didn't mention RB1's perfect actions that encouraged you to mimick the show (which was big for me watching Kai on tv back then too), but you couldn't exactly spend time trying to comb through every tiny detail. Definitely an interesting series and I'm bound to watch more of your channel. Love this kinda stuff.

Honestly I prefer BT3’s story to BT2’s. I feel like BT2’s is a proof of concept that’s kind of pointless-you just fly around, land in places and there’s a tiny area to move around in and one NPC. Just a bunch of unnecessary load screens and set pieces that don’t really add anything. Whereas, BT3 just cuts to the chase and has dynamic dialogue in battles which actually feels really nice.

She really enjoyed going to thrift stores and took us one day and she bought me a PS2 and BT1 (I was sort of barely getting into DBZ). I played it with my cousin constantly, to the point where my grandma had to get us to stop playing so we could do literally anything else lol. After a while I found these other two and I definitely agree that BT2 is my favorite, it just was as good as a DBZ could get imo. Recently I replayed BT1 on my PC and ho boy yeah it's definitely the start of the series lol. It was kinda frustrating at points 🤣.

Tenkaichi Tag Team on the PSP (which can be played in 10x the resolution if using the PPSSPP emulator) is exactly like Budokai Tenkaichi 1-3 but with the added option to fight 4 at once - you'd certainly enjoy it. The only negative is that the graphics are slightly worse where the characters won't move their mouths or eyes anymore - the PS2 was a more advanced system.
But I'd say Tag Team is the same game but with 4 players as an option - it has fewer characters sadly. You can still play 1 VS 1 or 3 vs 1 even.
It has a million cool mods as well.
Unlike the PS3 titles it plays exactly like Tenkaichi 3 but with an RPG-mode like in 2.

The combat and options were just epic. Two people knowing what they were doing was a spectacle. I had one friend who always played Vegeta and me Goku and it was always a real battle. Sometimes I'd win, others I'd lose. That game was my shit. T2 was good, but less so cause fewer friends and not old enough to travel to tourneys alone (community centers, etc across town).
