For comparison I took the Japanese proficiency test several times. You sign up for the test about 3-4 months in advance (which shocks most people - they expect to be able to sign up right before it starts). I also signed up hoping to improve my level just a little bit preparing for the test. Sometimes it worked and I was diligent and sometimes not so much. I can't say life totally got in the way - it was usually my motivation that was up to the task or wasn't. Signing up for online classes helped. There's actual online classes in Japanese you sign up for but from my experience, for Korean, you pretty much have to get a one on one tutor.
"The TOPIK passing community". I want to be part of that lol. Actually unlike Japanese I don't have any plans to take TOPIK. I was SO into Japanese that I was willing to get on an airplane to take the test but not so much for Korean. If I could take it locally then that would be different.
Although I think it's technically doable to improve some in 3-4 months, I think you really need 6+ months and if you're looking to do TOPIK you should plan to study all year for it. You don't have to cram every day though. Just be consistent. The longer you've been studying something the better you know it and that will probably show on the test. It's a bit different if you're Asian though. I've seen Asian students studying Japanese or Korean learn really fast (and I've seen some that did not learn really fast.. ). But for westerners it's definitely an uphill battle and you need to put the time in.

Yes it's a shame there is no more online classes for topik prep! What a loss as well because I think it would work really well. There are a lot of offline such classes in Korea but I dunno why they don't expand it online, esp after the pandemic it's not a hard thing to do anymore.
I totally agree, slow and steady is must better in exam prep than fast and furious. Also less stressful. I haven't decided yet if I would pass the topik again but if I do I would make sure that I would be able to prep for it nicely rather than rushed and stressed.
I found that the TOPIK forces one to learn A LOT of things that are very useless to know in actual daily life, like a lot of it is too textbook like and niche. DId you have the same feeling about the Japanese exam?
