Sylvie is a dynamic ballerina with a wide range of motion, but in this Raymonda variation, she beautifully controls the "stillness" with her strong core control, making this solo dignified and impressive.
Nobody can reach Sylvie's level in Raymonda act 3. She is the best one in this variation to me.

I was very very lucky to be able to see this on stage in London in 1990 when I was very young. I will carry it forever with me. I will never forget the silence in the whole auditorium. She had such a charisma that nobody even dared to make any little noise. What is also very meaningful is that from the way she did this variation you could already see how she would dance all the rest and above all the modern stuff. This variation belongs to her. Fullstop.
I wish I had seen Sylvie Guillem in the role of Nikiya with Laurent Hilaire as Solor in Nureyev's 1992 choreography of La Bayadère. My favourite ballet. I have a DVD of this ballet but with Isabelle Guérin. A 2002 recording with the marvellous costumes from Franca Squarciapino and the sumptuous decor by Ezio Frigerio to evoke India created for Rudolf Nureyev. Totally stunning.

I am too young to have known Sylvie when she was performing, so I'm unbelievably grateful videos like this exist. Like Chopin, Matisse, or Austen, Sylvie's art is plucked out of time and will live in the present forever.

Exactement. Une parfaite maîtrise de son art et de son corp. Le résultat est pure beauté. SG est entrée dans les annales de la danse classique.
B Zinck encore faudrait il avait vu in live GUillem depuis " mouvement -rythme - étude " de Maurice Béjart jusqu'à sa " Giselle ' au Théâtre du Châtelet cad de ses débuts jusqu'à la quarantaine avant sôn " Bolero " androgyne pour youtubers non avisés qui nont jamais entendu parler de Duska Sifnios , la je suis daccord 100-100 avec vous ou F Sicard : La Bayadere opéra de Paris 94 on en a entendu parler qd même faut le reconnaitre .
B Zinck non pas incomparable à la fin de sa carrière sa Giselle entre autres que j'ai vue au Théâtre du Chatelet-Paris a été loin de faire l'unanimité je ne suis pas le seul par contre je le répète toute sa carrière que j'ai pu voir avant sa trentaine est phénoménale géniale ; il faut remarquer que sur toutes les vidéos Y Tube c'est une Guillem jeune évidemment il y a son Bolero , les éclairages sont aussi très judicieux il faut le dire mais bien loin de la sensualité de Duska Sifnios ou Claude Bessy * Palais des sports de Paris 1970 ou Théâtre de la Gaite 1972 .
Une grande chance de pouvoir encore revoir Sylvie Guillem, toute jeune ici, elle est si parfaite et aussi tellement originale. Sacrée Sylvie !

Superb! She gets it and doesn’t let this variation deteriorate into a recitation. Like the Dying Swan, this is not about pyrotechnics. It’s about make grueling repetition and basics look sexy and the details of the port de bras must sparkle. I saw a comparison video with several famous dancers who are known for their excellence. One of them missed the point completely. And all the others fell apart at the passé part. It just became a recitation. Even Guillem! It is tricky.

I remember ordering Sylvie Guillem - Portrait of An Artist on VHS many years ago from the long defunct Ballet Shop in New York. Played that tape until it was completely worn out
I still have it! Got it at the Ballet Shop near Lincoln Center. Mesmerizing still to this day.
