I have often heard "experts" say, "Anyone could end up in a cult." I do not believe this! If you are capable of critical thinking and have personal boundaries, it's virtually impossible. Cults attract people who are feeling lost in life or have no sense of purpose and do NOT want to think for themselves. Recruiters know what to look for.

These killer cults are certainly intriguing to learn more in detail. Seems like they all have a long history attached to them.
Those of us who were keeping track of them 30-40 years ago were told we were scare mongers. Nice to see some recognition that it was perversion and crime, not just "satanic panic".
There is a good book about the Tokyo gas attack from the victims perspective called, Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche by Haruki Murakami. To this day you will rarely find a trashcan in Japan due to the horror that fiend and its followers committed. The cult still exists and has 2 off shoots today.

What's really scary is that these are cults. Organized religions have done far worse. The fact that these are cults rather than mainstream religious organizations speaks volumes for how far we've come as a species.

@@dcastleb69 Not really, agnostic is essentially the safest bet in terms of being correct. It doesn't reflect a lack of any higher power, it just recognizes that it's pretty much impossible to know with any meaningful level of certainty if there is or not. I've met some atheists over the years who were just as religious about it as the more devout followers of organized religions.

Reminds me so much of the Crusaders and other people who tried to use God to justify their heinous actions.
Ant Hill Kids should of been on this list. It is probably one of the most disturbing cults I've read about.
I will give extra points of research for Watchmojo saying that Jonestown drank cyanide-infused Flavor Aid, not Kool-aid, that is correct, the misconception happened because Kool-aid was such a synonymous name with drink flavoring some witnesses to the event claimed that the victim drank Kool-aid because the brand has basically become a stand-in for drink flavoring, it's one of the darker moments of brand recognition in history.
but "don't drink the flavourade" just doesn't sound right... 😉

the band Skynd did a song about Jonestown and kept flavor aid in their lyrics, it is a great song about that horrific event, named Jim Jones and it has one of the catchiest hooks to my knowledge

Aum Shinrikyo, Branch Davidians, the Manson Family, and the People's Temple are cults I'm familiar with.
I knew about Rod Ferrell because I heard of his Vampire Name Visago from a list of Real-Life Vampires

there are a few good docs on peoples temple (I recommend the 2 hour plus one) whee they talk to survivors, and use real audio, and film footage over the years
The book "The Road to Jonestown" is very detailed and thorough. I even think that it suffered a bit from not leaving enough out. It's so long that the important events sometimes get muddled down with boring details, causing an overload of information.

I’m from Eustis FL. and I still live in Eustis. The vampire clan I was told about when I was 10 back in 2009. I thought it was crazy and so far as far as Ik that’s the biggest murder case in our town I maybe wrong. I also had a family member who was married to this guy who murdered a couple he was their caretaker and he got rid of the bodies in a pile of hay. Crazy things I hear about my family been involved in lol

Accept and Manowar both wrote fantastic songs about jonestown, Accept's track (Koolaid) is told from the perspective of one of the survivors who escaped from the compound during the massacre while Manowar's track [Guyana (Cult Of The Damned)] is told from the perspective of jim jones as he watches the mass murder happening and reflects on the other horrors he committed against his own followers.

I get that if everyone has a gun it's unsafe because the access but there are people who enter your home with crowbars and bludgeon you to death. Maybe it's not probable and one in a million but I can see the argument.

When something that someone or a group of people devote their entire life to. Even giving their own life or taking another for does not come to pass. Does anybody else wonder what the remaining followers do with themselves after? The one thing about cults is their belief is generally driven in the realm of the living. As opposed to religion when generally their devotion is to an idea beyond life and earning a place among the heavens.
Nowadays when someone says something you don’t believe or is new….. you just google 😅 no wonder less formal cults nowadays!
What is the more funny thing, imho is that an of branch of the Rosicrucians (Solar Temple) linked itself with Crowley (OTO - Ordo Templi Orientis). As basically the first group derived from the cult of Rome, and Crowly calling himself a mystic (more like the biggest frauster that ever lived) referred to himself as The Beast. I can in honesty say, do NOT read anything he ever wrote as you might need a stronger stomach as you have.
