I remember going to a parent teacher conference meeting with my mom and dad and bringing my GBA with Shrek, “I’m sitting at a table, a few of my friends were there came over and said
“Steve, what games did you got?”
“Oh! I didn’t bring a game guys, I just got Shrek on game boy advance video, you guys wanna watch?”
All of us SQUISHED together to watch Shrek on this tiny GBA SP screen, our parents looking so confused
and just like that, you’re the cool kid in the group

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I was a sophomore in high school and had this same memory!! We all squished together to watch the SpongeBob "Pickles" episode 😅
So weird, I did the same thing in 2nd grade except it was with the original Pokemon show. I felt like a rich kid showing them how I could watch a single episode, meanwhile it had felt like I could watch TV entirely alone, lol. Same scenario. Parent teacher and waiting outside at a table and chairs with another pair of parents and childeren waiting for their turn. Thank you for unlockin a memory, Steve!

It makes me think about those “fold lock” plastic bags that really just don’t have an actual way to close.
The Playdate is a great and underrated video game console
Fun fact: The GBA Video bundle of Shark Tale + Shrek is the only GBA cartridge that has a 64MB memory. The maximum for games is 32MB, and there's only a handful of them.
The fact that they managed to fit two entire movies in just 64 megabytes is quite impress actually

i like how a lot of the videonow promo material has the characters in black and white as if they wanted to get kids to forget that spongebob is yellow
Scott still doesn't know he's yellow
That’s funny to think about, since one of the Spongebob episodes on that disc was Fry Cook Games, where SpongeBob and Patrick keep calling each other ‘yellow’ and ‘pink’ throughout it. Wonder if any kid was confused watching it through that system.
Thats actually because the video now had to implement color in later models so... i guess it was their way to go "SEE? WE CAN DO TV TOO"

Are you telling me that scotty doesn't know?
Tbh having these as a kid really made you feel like “this is the future.” Having a portable screen to watch cartoons meant a lot back in the early 00s for us. Remember always wanting the VideoNow but we could never afford it but still using GBA Video a lot.

When you described how you thought at 5:38 ... yeah I was that type of kid too. Music just takes you away.
It's scary how well he put it into words. I'm literally the same way, still to this day
Reminds me of the portable music players from the 90s like the HitClip, which was a tiny device that played a heavily compressed MP3 stored on individual cartridges you were supposed to wear like charms. We made due with what we had at the time!
And not even the whole song! The word "clip" was literal!
Oh yeah I remember those! I had the 'boom box' one with the 'clip' that played FM radio on it. Good times! 😂
And to the 5 people who were asking yes, gba video works on the ds consoles with the gba slot, BUT doesnt work on a gameboy player because piracy issues or something
Well that and the video would look absolutely awful when blown up on a much bigger screen.
@@MysteryMiiYes, but it was the piracy concern that prevented it working on GBA player. I mean, I'm sure everyone would have loved to have a tiny video recorded to vhs to play over and over 😂😂
Hey all, Scott's hands here!

Am I the only one who hears it as "Hey Y'all"? Lmao

I remember when I had an orthodontist that worked especially with children and had a Gameboy Advance for kids to play on. When he gave it to me, it had a video cartridge inside with Fairly Odd parents and stuff! It was nice!
I never had any of these but MAAAAN the fact that 2000s kids nostalgia is a thing now haunts me 💀😭
Same and as a 2000s kid myself yup
I remember I had a Videonow as a kid but it actually came in Color. Never knew the black and white ones existed.
As a kid, Gba video was the most revolutionary thing to witness back then, they definitely got me occupies whenever on a plane trip.
So, despite being the age at the time, I never had GBA Video. Really, the only time I engaged with it was when I had a friend over, and she had a SpongeBob GBAV cartridge on hand. Instead, my parents got a portable DVD player, and that was how I got to watch film and TV on the go. Ended up watching a lot of golden era Simpsons through that.
Same, I had a portable dvd player with simpsons season 2,3,5...and a couple more i dont remember.
I was too young to watch GBAV, my sister had a GBA, but I don’t know if she had any GBAVs.
I mostly watched movies and shows on my old IPad/Ipod touch, and…On my PSP, my dad downloaded 3 movies on it for me to watch as a kid. And those movies were…Megamind, serves up, and Wall.E. Yeah, I was born in 2000, I was too little to enjoy GBAV, sadly. It looks cool tho
There was also a third competitor in this handheld video war...JuiceBox.
It was truly a war with no winner.
Yes, I also watched Phelous' reviews of these things.
@zmbdog and JuiceBox was the number 1 loser.
My neighbor and I would make forts and we'd use a GBA SP with a few of those cartridges as a makeshift "TV". I miss that.
Life was never as good as it was watching Spongebob and Patrick blow bubbles at their bubblestand in what felt like 10p with a barely audible speaker through the GBA on a road trip at 5 years old.
It’s so cool to see some of the wild stuff they tried back in the day. This stuff would never fly anymore. Everything truly felt like a random experiment just to see what sticks.
Notice that most of them were made before iphone was introduced. iphone really killed those experimental dedicated media devices
Videonow had an upgraded model the following year with color and a significant resolution boost, would be interesting to compare that to GBA Video.
Still worse than the GBA, Due to the dic skipping and stuttering
Hard to believe but there are kids watching this born after this era, watching this like they’re hearing about the old days, same way I used to watch AVGN talk about the NES.
The Shrek/Sharktales 2 pack was an experiment from god
You know what has held up surprisingly well the psp video releases.
“You know kids will watch the same thing over and over again”
*me watching Scott’s Stash discography 3x over*
When I was a kid I had a few GBA video carts. I had a Fairly Odd Parents one, a Pokemon one where Ash battled the Hoenn trainer during the Johto Legaue, and Shrek 2 (which came with headphones for the GBA SP). Still crazy that they had a whole movie on a cart.
One of my cousins used to have a GBA video cart that was the Spongebob carts. It was the one with Ripped Pants, Bubblestand and Jellyfishing to name a few. I would play that cart a lot, to the point where i for got to give it back to him at one point.
These days however, i have amased a sizeable VideoNow collection! I won one in an eBay auction 3 years ago, and it came with a good amount of PVDs. Now i have way more than what came with it, including some international imports, because get this, the VideoNow is region free! I sometimes watch some of the stuff i have for it, but considering that it is the VideoNow color... it's more for novelty these days. And media preservation.
Damn Scott is working hard! He posted a Scott's Stash video 2 days ago and there's another one already!
Yeah; I think this one was originally locked behind one of the trading cards from Pixel Empire, so Scott already had this one at the ready for a while.
@@ryanschwartz4959Nope, it's specified in the description of videos when the video was from a card
He probably records multiple Scott's Stash videos on the same day. Like recording the video on the SNES Classic directly after NES Classic, for example, just makes sense. Editing might take a little longer, though. But I still think these videos are roughly scheduled and not necessarily releasing on the day they are finished.
6:19 FAMILY GAME NIGHT 3!
I love that game!
The funniest anectdote is that GBA video actually did influence something positive, as the research put into making them was eventually used to create "ACT: IMAGINE"... any DS fan will know that red and white logo by heart since its the compression technology that made FMVs on DS feasable with actual decent Voice acting!
Nintendo actually acquired them in 2011. Now they're more commonly known as NERD (Nintendo European Research & Development)
I had a relative get me a Pokémon episode for one of those GameBoy advance video cartridges because they thought it was a game. I hadn’t been interested in the Pokémon anime for years at that point but I still rewatched that episode dozens of times. Oh the joys of limited entertainment options…
Y’know seeing this now may not seem much, but for it’s time GBA Video was kinda a big deal. It was crazy seeing TV shows on a Game Boy Advance, something that didn’t seem possible. But they did it and it was really cool!
You didn't even show how fucked the Shrek & Shark Tale 2in1 was, they compressed it even more to make both fit
I remember getting my first GBA video in kindergarten and it was the spongebob vol.2. My little mind was absolutely blown away. I can literally remember every detail from where I was and everything. So, Thanks for the nostalgia!
I got nothing to say, so I'll just quote this iconic comment from Pan-Pizza's Gameboy Advance Video review:
*RadioactiveSkulls:* I remember in grade 3 someone in my school had a game boy video Shrek cartridge and about 30 kids all huddled around the gameboy would watch it.
On a tiny ass screen.
30 kids.
my parents took the Challenge Route
tiny CRT with a built in VCR that can plug into the car's cigarette lighter/power outlet, paired with /only/ toy story 2 on VHS
Oh man we had one of those too, those things were awesome back in the day! It had a bunch of heavy-duty straps to secure it between the front seats so it didn't crush your bones if the car got rear-ended.
scott is such a machine uploading do much
10:13 For some reason, seeing the upside-down Jimmy Neutron face in black and white from the disk inside the player is giving me freaky "trapped" vibes.
Dankpods reviewing the videonow: “can you believe no one bought this?”
No one: “hey there. Name’s Scott “
"average person buys 3 VideoNows a year" factoid actualy just statistical error. average person buys 0 VideoNows per year. Scott Georg Woz, who lives in Ohio & buys over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
The Gameboy Advance Video stuff had an 'Official Seal of Quality' on the box and cartridge sticker... I could see someone mistaking it for a game back then, and I could see someone mistaking it for a repro now. I can't even find a complete season of Tuff Puppy... wouldn't mind walking around with one episode in the chamber, lol.
Moral of the story, the Gameboy Advance Video provided the entire cinematic cutscene for its videogame counterpart. They had a first season episode for Yu-Gi-Oh and not Beyblade? Sad Emio Kyle face :(
this definitely feels nostalgic i completely forgot about these
My first time watching the episode band geeks was through video now, and let me tell you it made it all the more hilarious seeing all the unexpected stuff in the episode at a lower frame rate, audio quality and black and white, it truly felt like watching a lost episode
I watched DankPods cover the VideoNow and now Scott
Now we need Ashens to make a video on it and we got the trifecta here
Techmoan did a video on it too.
just in time . just got my first ds lite ready for to bring back memories with GBA
I had the Videonow Color and the one that allowed you to play DVD style games on it, the Videonow XP
I love GBA Video and PSP UMD Videos. I just love watching things in the most awkward way possible. There’s just a charm to both of them. I only ever had one GBA Video when I was younger (a Cartoon Network one) but I used to watch it all the time. I also had a Videonow and I think I had a SpongeBob one and Fairly OddParents one but I didn’t watch it as much.
I know all about long car trips to visit family. We lived in northern MI while most family was south MI. So lots of 1-3 hour long trips over the course of 14 years. I don't miss them. I can barely tolerate being in a car for more than 5 minutes let alone an hour. At least back then we had portable DVD players, CD players, Ipod Shuffle, GBA, DS, PSP, and more to keep ourselves occupied as kids. It was the most time I ever used my handhelds.
I’m 37. Way back in the summer of 2004 before my senior year of high school, I spent about a month and a half in Europe as a mini semester as a foreign exchange student with a group from my high school. I took a portable DVD player that ate up batteries like a damn hobbit, and my game boy advance and a ton of the video cartridges. It came in clutch. This video was pure nostalgia for me.
All bets were off though when I got my PSP since it could play UMDs and man did I have a ton of those damn little discs
5:32 oh my god, I used to do that as a kid too, I still do it to this day! Lol
I actually have experience with both of these formats. Got three GBA Video carts of SpongeBob, Fairly OddParents and Pokémon, while my sister’s kids used to have the original VideoNow player.
The choice for many kids at the time was rather obvious. Would you rather buy a portable video player with a tiny black & white screen that required its own proprietary discs, or full color video cartridges for a gaming handheld that you probably already own?
It's pretty crazy to look back at how media like this has evolved since the early 2000s. I didn't have any of the GBA Videos but I remember taking my portable DVD player on road trips or using the built in player in my grandparents' minivan.
I had the color version growing up. My sister will never let me forget when we went around a bunch of stores to find one only for me to realize that no stotes around me sold VideoNow discs, so i wasn't able to get more for awhile.
I used to want the game boy advance video cartridges so bad still kinda do
I heard GBA Video was amazing back in the day!
I'm not from USA, so I love see this kind of video and imagine what was like to be a child in this time in America, a play a lot of videogames in my time, but things like handheld games and acessorys and stuff where pretty rare in Brazil on my time, love to imagine this kind of thing, the only time I have seen a portable DVD display where in cars
Boy does this bring me back, great video 👍
I don't care how _dorky_ or _dumb_ people think that we; those who were children during this time; were at this time. Back then, technology like this really made you feel like you were interacting with *the future*
I would even argue that we were more innovative back then, everything that we enjoy about modern television was built of the errors and successes of media like this
*a wild psp video disc approaches*
PSP was so ahead of it's time
Omg I had both. Had an Amanda show on my pink videonow, and had a fairy odd parents, sonic x, yugioh and courage the cowardly dog videos on my red sp. So many summer memories
Holy shit, I did not expect this to be a topic but my carsick inner child appreciated this throwback so much
Scott as a kid would listen music from his favourite media and wonder on his own, what his own show would look like with this music. I would say how relatable this is to my childhood but I still do it as an adult so...
...yep
I remember getting a video now soon after it came out for xmas as a kid. Absolutely loved the thing
I remember these, though I never had either myself. I remember being very excited when I upgraded from a basic MP3 player to one WITH A SCREEN
The only person I've seen give a "this was perfectly servicable" response to the GBA video. Any other time, they go "yeah I was a kid around this time and even I realized GBA video wasnt worth my money" but I could see why you'd be fine with it if you were like, completely scrap for options
I didn't have it back then, but my job at the time flew me around to some industry stuff as a young(compared to now anyway) lad. and yes the gba one isn't bad, the videonow b&w is pretty bad. I did a bunch of video encoding, player and stuff around this 2004 timeframe and for a mobile it's not bad, it's better than typical mms messages were at the time or on-demand mms messages.. now THOSE were a real actual waste of money. we'd tinker with stuff too, you can encode similar to the gba video quality for smartphones from the same time in realplayer format. it wasn't until shortly after that phones got beefier built in helper chips and such to help with encoding and playing proper video formats.
For those wondering, the music is an instrumental version of "Next Stop Hollywood" by Nick Nolan.
I owned a GBA SP as a kid, I never heard of these cartridges until now.
I find the concept of these super interesting and the execution is honestly not half bad for early 2000’s standards. I would have absolutely loved these as a kid.
GBA Video, because I already had a GBA SP system and didn’t need to buy another device! My cousin lended me the videos of SpongeBob and Kim Possible episodes, he was a big Nickelodeon and Disney channel fan that he owned several cartoon packs! VideoNow was obsolete when it came out, that should’ve came out when Game Boy was still monochrome and even VideoNow was made obsolete by UMD and even Apple’s iPod with video playback!
My brother and I had the same VideoNow (except blue and silver). I rewatched Band Geeks and Dying for Pie so many times that I basically memorized the entire episode. Still have them and recently bought the same sealed version from eBay. Good times…
YES. Video now is one of the earliest products I remember really wanting as a kid. I was on ebay two days ago looking at them. Theyre cheap, and many have lots of shows to go with them. I ended up getting a handful of gameboy video cartridges back then instead.
Reminds me of when I had nothing but a flip phone with a grainy camera but Internet video wasn't much of a thing on phones yet. I had a wait at the airport the next day, so I recorded clips of Squidbillies off hotel TV the night before. Watching them on that two inch screen at low res was still better than nothing.
I was fighting the urge to press A to skip cutscenes when I first saw SpongeBob running on GBA video.
The Video Now was part of a market that seems to no longer exist. “Kids and teens” versions of “grown-up” electronics products like a portable DVD player don’t sell anymore (outside of those aimed for toddlers) because of tech like smartphones, and real nostalgia for such tech is therefore going disappearing as well. Was a fascinating thing to see, though.
It might seem like crap, but trust me, these things went a long way, I had a view master and was very entertained from that! This would've blown my socks off if I had these as a kid!
I remember seeing a blue thing wearing a bell underwater once.
I learned it was Sonic X later on when I was 15 or 16.
I remember finding a VideoNow at a Goodwill! I also got a VideoNow 3 disc combo that contained the Wild Thornberries, Jimmy Neutron, and a preview disc that was different from the other preview disc that I had as well!
Scotts wining, acting like decent handheld gaming and a portable DVD player is living on scraps lmao. Bro we had it made, it felt magical too because those were both new technology.
I feel like Scott’s stash is just if Scott Wozniak wasn’t in his own universe, but the actual real world
For some reason i always feel like this channel is scott the woz mixed with dankpods
I had a thing called the Disney Mix Max which had entire movies on video cards. You better believe I loved Porates of the Caribbean on double-digit pixel resolution!
I had the blue/purple video now , as a 27 year old we had a lot of the same childhood experiences lol
technology and tech designs were crazy back in the early 00's, companies tried everything, threw all kinds of shit against the wall and waited to see what stuff, it was truly a fun and revolutionary time for gadgetry.
VideoNow and Mattel HyperScan were the two biggest scams of my childhood. Tiger was the king of behind-the-times electronics between the LCD games, GameCom and this.
It's sweet that Scott imagined having his own show when he was younger, that definitely makes sense
..

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Jesus
I can definitely tell he poured a little whiskey while filming this. 😂😂
I had a VideoNow with color. Some of the ones I remember were SpongeBob, Fairly Odd Parents, Thomas and Friends, Scooby Doo, and Batman
You know it's impressive when GBA Video is able to run the entirety of Shrek despite some disadvantages.
I don’t care what anyone says, I have fond memories of the GBA videos cartridges. It really helped when going on long car trips. I had the Cartoon Network versions
It was amazing seeing full motion video running off of a cartridge at all back in those days, especially on such low-powered hardware. When Brother Bear did it during the intro on GBA, it was mind blowing.
I never had any GBA video, but I did have the pale blue VideoNow with the Band Geeks preview episode, as well as a pack of Transformers Armada episodes.
I was half expecting the video to end with the first second of "all-star" from the Shrek on Game Boy Advance Video cartridge
I had these two when I was a kid. It did helped me kill the time when I’m stuck at church or laundromat.
I had the VideoNow but we only ever had the Band Geeks episode of SpongeBob. Where we didn’t have cable at home and I could only watch it when visiting my grandparents, I probably saw that episode more than all others combined.
I always wondered if people actually bought those tv episodes . Cool to know that they actually worked
Had both as well, funnily enough I found a portable VCR on Ebay a month ago and ive been using it daily !
I’ve been watching GBA video cartoons on my RG35XX SP what a trip 🙏🏽i thought you were gonna end on “ And next was video now colour “🙏🏽
Crossfaded at tha gaff and i love you scott!! Youre getting hugged if i see you dude !!!
This is the perfect video for me I owned the color video now and I had Shrek on gba
My favorite portable video player was the Juicebox, I literally only have show for it and it was yui-gi-oh and it was my jam
