@@robertfindley921 "She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain"... I hear ya. Al Stewart must've been taking notes that day...
I couldn't agree more. For me, the 1960's is the greatest era in the history of popular music, and I was very lucky to be a teenager at that time. I saw Simon and Garfunkle live in concert, as well as many other gifted artists of that period. Thank goodness we at least have these recordings, because I doubt that we will ever be blessed with music and artists of this high caliber again .....
Paul Simon is one of the best song writers of all time. When Al Stewart was a struggling song writer / singer in England he stayed at a cheap hotel in London. The hotel manager said "there's an American song writer who comes here from time to time. I put him in the room next to you, I hope you don't mind." Al could hear the American writing songs through the wall. The two became friends. The American was Paul Simon.
Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio...Joltin Joe has left and gone away hey hey hey. A metaphor for the loss of innocence from a simpler time for America.
Mrs. Robinson is on the Bookends album, which came out in 1968. Paul Simon never finished the song for the movie, which is why you never hear it in its entirety in the movie.
I asked Richard if this was where he got his Screen Actors Guild (union) card and that’s when I found out he had already done about 10 TV shows like Bewitched and That Girl before this movie.
So many great songs. 59th street bridge song Hazy shade of winter (and Bangles remake) think you did that already Sound of silence (original acoustic wednesday morning 3am and more familiar from sounds of silence album) Bridge over troubled water Kathy's song Original wednesday morning 3am Sparrow Dangling conversation Save the life of my child This would be a good start

Interestingly, the song lyrically has nothing to do with Mrs. Robinson from the movie. Jesus would need to have major sit-down with Mrs. Robinson before stamping her ticket to heaven. lol. She has a lot of explaining to do. Definitely recommend The Graduate. Wild movie.
Actually the "...put it in your pantry with your cupcakes where no one ever goes..." Describes perfectly sex without being censured on radio. Pantry is panties, cupcakes is the prize in the panties, where no one ever goes describes a dead bedroom with husband. The lyrics in beginning about about knowing more for their files is where the friend of the family is trying to recruit him for his business. Great movie about him a cougar and her daughter. The end though is not thought though which he sees at the end, our actions though thrilling as we go don't always produce what we truly want and where do we go from here.
People with substance abuse problems, before the beginning of the 1980s, used to go to either mental hospitals, or religious centers that help with various things. Mental hospitals, having a stigma attached to them, were a secondary choice. The song is about Mrs. Robison being admitted to a religious retreat for treatment. Although the the song wasn't written specifically for the movie, Paul Simon figured that it would fit the aftermath of what happened in the movie, if he just tweaked a couple of things.

Wonderful pick, thank you Angela! 😁 If I might nominate a movie track, may I suggest "It's All Right Ma, I'm only Bleeding", performed by Roger McGuinn, (written by Bob Dylan), from the film "Easy Rider". ❣️😁😇🌹
Must See Movie. Beautiful up beat song. After you see the movie you will understand how ironic the lyrics are. "'Jumpin' Joe" is Joe DiMaggio, a famous baseball player. The reason Mrs. R says he's gone away is because Joe represents fake innocence. Great lyric.
You also could have heard it in a recent movie called Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Just a couple years ago. This movie featured the music of Paul Revere & The Raiders. My favorite band EVER!!!
Lamenting the changing times of the 60s. Joe DiMaggio represents the old world to the new. Paul Simon had his finger on the pulse of the nation! Incredible.
Another must-see movie in that era is Harold and Maude. Very unusual love story. Great soundtrack by Cat Stevens. Some of the songs have been reviewed by Angela already.
Based on a book first.Mrs. Robinson part won a oscar it was her second Oscar She also won playing Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. She was married to a great comedian Mel Brooks.
Hi Angela, This song is actually about a woman in a faith-based rehab for alcoholism. We dissected the song when I was in high school. If you listen closely to the song you can hear it.

Definitely a must-watch movie. Best movie of the 60's. Unusual love triangle. Great soundtrack and great acting by the cast: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katherine Ross.
I've heard this a hundred times, but I couldn't tell u what it's about. I'm guessing its something about this Mrs Robinson person...iconoc movie BTW haven't seen it in years, wonder how it holds up?
where have you gone joe DiMaggio/a nation turns its lonely eyes to you -academics love to point to this couplet as the essence of the angst of that period, as the simple 50s went away and left in its place turmoil and conflict. DiMag was like a rock star. Imagine Tom Brady where virtually the only sport people care about is pro football.
He was also upset about his name being used in this song. When he heard it, DiMaggio said, I’m right here! I haven’t gone anywhere. At first, he didn’t get the symbolism of using his name. 🤣🤣🤣
I know you really like The Carpenters - would like to hear your reaction to "Desperado" And another, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" by Neil Diamond and Barbara Streisand. Thank you.
At the end of The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman uses a cross to lock an angry congregation inside a church. For that, the film is often considered to be anti-Christian. Perhaps this song’s lyrics also reflect that outlook.
By coincidence, I just heard the Lemonheads 1992 cover of this the other day. Not as good as the original, of course, but pretty decent as hard-rocking covers go: ruclips.net/video/EHWFMuFwnBA/видео.html
The song really has very little to do with the movie. He even wanted to call the character in the song something else. But the movie execs at least wanted the name in the song.
The film tells the story of 21-year-old Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), a recent college graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older married woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), but then falls for her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).
The movie and song were very risky for the times. --- Mrs Robinson is the orginal Cougar. She seduces her friends college age son. (Ann Banecroft was perfect in the role). My mother absolutely HATED this song because our last name is Robinson... Every guy would use cheezy song & movie pick up lines on her.
Never really understood the connection between this song and the movie. I guess the woman in the song is thought of as crazy (she's obviously being shown around a mental facility with all their condescending staff) and people though the woman in the movie was crazy for the affair she had?
Just another example of Paul Simon's brilliant songwriting. Great song, great harmonies. Where's this level of talent today?
Sadly, no where.

This song is from the film The Graduate directed by Mike Nichols starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. Thank you Angela👍👍👍
Mrs. Robinson is on the Bookends album, which came out in 1968. Paul Simon never finished the song for the movie, which is why you never hear it in its entirety in the movie.

There's another great song..from this movie , Scarborough Fair...
I really like listening to Burt Bacharach's version of "Scarborough Fair".
Such an Iconic classic song. They made so many good songs.
