- What's the deal with all of the twin fin and mid-length surfboards in the line up lately?
I headed down to El Porto on a small but fun swell to catch up with Dane Zaun and his new twin fin Chilli surfboard.
It all comes down to riding whatever makes you happy and experimenting.
Thanks for watching, I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll see you on the sand.

Twin Fins are so fun to ride. You get up and go right after the take off. You receive a lot of speed, quick release off the tail and freedom.
Twin fins for the win!!! Kinda like you mentioned, helps you make the most out of conditions from 2 feet to 6 feet. So much glide and fun
On bigger, faster waves they lack the firm bite a mid mounted or thruster fin will allow. They give a lot more than I expected in bigger waves 8’+.
I felt myself slipping while turning, kinda like a skateboard with trucks. Best on smaller days as a pocket rocket!
A lot is the width and fin size. This vid is really good explaining twins with Josh Kerr ruclips.net/video/Uoq1tY8pSmk/видео.htmlsi=1WNLRYCKpFTNbZMm
I give that 1 OZ glass job 3 more waves.
lol
Our region has such low quality waves that if it weren't for twinnies and mid lengths, I would only ride longboards, or take up another past time. I have been riding mid lengths and fish type boards for over 15yrs and I have found them to be very fun and effective for our conditions.
Very true!
Marketing at its finest. After quad mania, it was twin mania and now mid-lenght mania. What’s next ? Quick, quick ! Consumers wants their new rush of dopamine !
Great video! Short and concise
Yes, I've been seeing twin fins being surfed by guys who always have the latest shapes. There is so much incredible footage of surfers like Ryan Burch, Tyler Warren, Joel Tudor, Trevor Gordon, Devon Howard...not the WSL types, people start thinking that they'd like to surf the "alternative" stuff. I have 30 something surfboards and only one resembles a modern shortboard.
your legit ngl
In my opinion tri's and quads are punch and drive kind of boards, where fish are more squirt and glide kind of boards.
Twin fins are highly underrated as far as I’m concerned…. I road MR twins for years back in my shredding days. I just ordered an 8’1” mid-fish from Jose Barahona… should be a blast to surf!
LOVE the way TY surfs; his whole approach and execution is pure - he's a class act in the water to surf with too.
6 ya I got a local shaper to try to duplicate a boards I loved. It's 7'6" so you might expect it had limitations but it real was a great utility for almost any size waves. The copy didn't really have the same turning ability so I ended up surfing it as a twin. However as time went by more longer (mid-length) twin fins started appearing. When I started riding 7.5' thrusters the name mid length and mid length twin didn't exist.
The original board was labelled a fun board and was purchased by my wife. She intended the board to be an intro to shorter boards than her 9'2" mal. Needless to say I borrowed it and it became a bit of an addiction. It's not original to ride 7+ boards and that's what I have ridden for most of the past 50 years. The odd coincidence is that when the failed copy really only worked as a twin fin, a short few years later it's a thing. I don't think I'm a sales model for new board design but I think this may have had some subconscious sociological effect.
PS: I await the flack. 🤣🤣
One of my first boards was a Local Knowledge twin..then thruster from Bob McTavish circa 1981
Yep I have a spot for a third fin (fish) and rarely ever use it. Super skatey w/o it.
Your buddy and his wife rip and are fun to watch, can you video them surfing that twin fish more? 🙏🏽not enough video on RUclips of people ripping on twin fish
Twin fins? Will the next episode be skating empty swimming pools? 8-P
Skating empty pools would be awesome! Now you're bringing back some fun memories!
Used twins for years, what’s all the noise? 🤙
super responsive! its like a skateboard on the water!
What size lens is good for filming surf stuff? Is something like a 70mm long enough, or do you need more like a 200mm?
Really depends on where you’re shooting. 200mm is a good place to start 👍
Grew up on twinnies.modern contours and rockers make them great.
"Just want to join the" Mark Richards "party"!
Been on a 5'4 twin/fish, shit its even been called a knee board. Since 94', best board ever. Interesting, did you mention the average age of those/ us who ride them? Bet it skews on the upper end of crustiness...
Good point, don't see too many younger surfers on em.
Was that Brook Koepka??? 😃
Give me all of them 😂
🤫 shhh it’s a secret 🤫
Little typo in the title?😘
