I've had a Zoom H2n for about 10 years, and I really like it for ambient sound. There's a quirk, though. If you use an external mic, you have to set the H2n to record only on the XY pattern. Plugging in an external mic turns off only the XY mics. If the setting is to MidSide, 2Ch, or 4Ch, the midside mics stay on, as you've found.
H2N is amazing. I often turn it on before dawn and record hours of the morning bird chorus. However the external mics I am using is way more sensitive for this type of recording (for me). Thanks for watching =Cosmo
@@cosmoschannel7575 Yeah, it's a great recorder for ambient sound. Just remember to set it to XY so that the mid-side mics are off when you plug in an external mic. I've had that bite me a couple of times.

I just want to mention that if you use the highest possible input gain from the recorder you will also increase the self noise and the possibility for clipping and distortion, as also artificial sound artifacts from the digital pre amps.
The highest input gain does not offer the best sound the recorder can produce!
The signal is much too high and will sound bad, as you can hear easily with the Zoom H1N.
The SN-Ratio is crucial and it is better to record with a balanced level and to increase the volume in post production to get the best possible audio quality out of your recordings.

I like the H1 audio, reminds me of high school starting out with the non-N version. Clean, workable, more decent than most still. That Sony though hnnng! I Been wanting a d100 so long.

Do you remember what that rubber washer is called? I don't find it on the internet and it doesn't seem to be included with the grip (anymore).
Hi, Ive been looking at the H2n for my use. Have you been able to get it to work with the External Microphones. Im thinking of using it with mics like yours or a set of stereo Clippy EM272Z1's
Way late I know but he plugged the mic in the headphone jack. the mic jack is on the other side.
Shame you didn't get external mics to work on the H2N. It works well. I use mine with spatial and the mid-side mics for frogs. Awesome!

Yes if you send me the Rode! Ha ha ha. Sorry I do not have it to test. But you are on the right track. Not every mic is a good match for every recorder in my opinion. Best wishes for a good choice. Regards =Cosmo

The price and sound from the h1n makes the sony seem a bit overpriced by comparison. Yes the sony is better but not $1,000 better 😂 I mean, that's saying something good about the h1n since ive been an audio engineer for nearly 20 years. I love mine.
Since you're audio engineer, which one would you recommend H1n or H2n? Is there any real difference. Thank you!
