You know- I didn't know it at the time cause I was doing an NCR route over a Legion route (and only played through once of FO:NV) but playing as a female courier...and ultimately going to fight Caesar is now more hilarious... because of all companions I had brought Veronica who punched his head off before I could get the last hit in. Hearing Ulysses chuckle is incredibly cathartic for me. He's so angsty about the Divide and the war in the Mojave that hearing him dip into a moment of levity feels soothing, even if for a moment. God, hes way too hot for my own good

Ever notice everybody who does this is always a low status legionary? Vulpes, Lanius, Caesar Pheonix and Lucius all never bring it up, for example. It was supposed to be revealed by Caesar that he doesn't really have a bureaucracy, so he just split the nation into sex roles so he had half the nation maintain the state the the other half expand it. He was fine with people taking a less fixed role in society once he conquers the NCR, but until then he needs his tribals to be split up like this. But I guess the tribal superstition and low class understanding doesn't just go away. Caesar can tell a legionary what to do, but he can't explain why it's important. He can't sit down with legionaries and explain what utilitarianism is, so instead he goes "fuck it, as long as you understand the orders who cares if you understand the reasoning" I think that's a really cool take on the antagonists rather than just being meanies who do bad things because their leader is evil.
I mean, they still do bad things to a lot of people, just because they don't follow Caesar's ideologies. No matter how "noble" his goals might be, their methods are no better than the average raider, and if history has taught us something is that barbarism never lead us to anywhere good.

When you talk to ppl about the ncr you always hear they are the good guys but extremely incompetent and as mentioned sometimes straight up worse killers than the legion
I always thought they never really got the idea that Caesar seperates men and women for efficiency sake as you can't have the same people who bear future soldiers to also fight alongside them, not in a sort of prejudice manner. They seem to just be conditioned to think "women = below men" when simply it's much more. I guess Caesar's initial idea gets lost when most of your army are a bunch of tribal men who've been forcefully assimilated and raised since childhood and still hold some childish values. Cut content also reveals there would've been towns and such with civilians, men and women alike. So it's not like all women in the Legion would be slaves.
Even Cato Hostilius is just mildly surprised they would bring a woman in but then is just happy and helpful all the way. Realistically most spec ops soldiers today would have his same reaction
Honestly a female legionary courier would probabaly result in women gaining new rights within the legion as by minting a coin with the couriers image Caesar is effectively putting them on the same level of himself and the other mythical heroes and founders of the legion, and by making a woman one of the legions founding myths who knows maybe it might bring about change especially considering what Ulysses says about the legion changing as it moves west.
it could possibly shift the perception of women to be a bit more positive in the legion maybe, but I doubt it would improve their situation in the way of rights. you gotta remember in the real world that there were hundreds of female Empresses, Queens, Baroness' and Ladys that directly influenced the governance of numerous nations, kingdoms and empires, without really making any substantial change so far as women's rights were concerned.
@@Groobis I would argue that, there is a possibility the game does not give us a full picture of what living under legionary rule looks like I am not saying the legion is a fair society when it comes to gender rights by any means, and they are certainly much less progressive compared to the ncr (which go so far with it i would say it would harm their society in their home territories hard in the long run. Why conscript female soldiers when the male ones are biologically more expendable and physically more fit for the job? But fallout was never a super realistic focused post apocalyptic universe so i will chalk it up to that ). The only legion area you get to visit is a military encampment, where all of the women seem to be slaves or servants, that move with the armies and there doesnt seem to be any wifes or families of the soldiers in the camp so they are probably at home. This was a thing that also happened in the real life roman legions its why a century was called that despite only having 80 fighting men in it the other 20 were slaves, but a legionary encampment was not a real picture of how society in actual roman towns, villages and cities worked. So i would argue that the same might apply here, while the status of women under legion rule is very very probably not great and they are certainly not viewed as equal, it could very well be less dire than what´s depicted here, where at the very least they don´t have to be worried about being constantly sexually assaulted like the woman in the video said and can very possible live relatively normal lives. But alas they did not show actual legion territories in the game. I heard they intended to at one point but it got cut due to time constraints. It would have been fascinating to see for better or for worse how the average person under ceasar´s rule lived. Though their customs were probably not completely uniform since the societies under caesar consist of many conquered tribes with their own customs adding to it probably as well .

I dont think using actual Roman society to base what Legion society would be like is very reliable, as the Legion really only resembles Rome superficially. Remember, the faction isn't called "Ceaser's Empire" or "Ceaser's Rome," it's Ceaser's LEGION. by Ceaser's own admission, there really isn't much else to the Legion other than the military. given how Ceaser and especially Lanius talk about the way they conquer territories, its pretty clear that the Legion assimilates people and territories as a means of "Extracting resources" more so than Expanding their area of Governance/influence. and to a faction that is more or less centered entire around it's military, Slaves are far more valuable than free citizens. Part of Ceaser's (very flimsy) justification for why he wants to take Vegas, and destroy the NCR, is that he believes that by conquering and absorbing NCR territory, His Legion will transform from a wandering army, to an actual functioning society made up of the best parts of both the NCR and the Legion. however, just Because that's his goal for the future, doesn't mean his society is run like that in the 'present'
@@Groobis Yeah true caesar's society is not meant to be completely 1:1 modeled after roman society, what i meant with that roman legion example was to give you a real life example of how life in a military encampment would look a lot different from a life in roman villages, towns etc. But to your point about caesar's legion's conquered territories. The lore states, that caesar's legion is not exclusively a conquering, enslaving and directly subjugating force it does let a lot of settlements in it's territory mostly live their own lives, relatively untouched with a degree of autonomy as long as their pay their tributes and submit to overall legion authority a bunch of whom are way more modern than the tribal based legionary culture. And Caesar does also severely punish legion rulers who mismanage or exploit the people they are supposed to be watching over, knowing that if the people under his command don't actually h. So in legion territory a lot of settlements live relatively autonomously, they are protected from raiders and the roads are also kept safe so they can trade very safely. So caesar's ruling is also a bit different than one might assume from a glance at least in a fair amount of the settlements under it's control and from what it appears legionary rule is not unpopular in areas under it's control so one might say he already has a functioning society to some extent, though definitely not the most stable considering caesar dying would probably destabilize the whole thing and even if there is not a civil war the successor would probably not be as intelligent as caesar was and would probably mishandle the system of governing caesar set in place only focusing on conquest and military matters. It is similiar to how rome managed it's territories. People often assume, that Rome just painted the map red, conquered, enslaved and romanized everyone they came across, but a fair bit of the time they left the territories they ruled with a fair bit of autonomy often ruled by local rulers but still subordinate to the provincial roman governor, but the fact stands that a lot of the people were mostly left to manage their own matters locally. But yeah caesar's legion is definitely not 1:1 remake of rome especially since his army and thus the culture of the army seems to be mostly tribal based and thus are pretty much a different people from the other more modern settlements under legionary rule, which would probably cause a lot of conflict, if caesar didn't balance the equation, but it is a problem that will probably surface once caesar dies.

It's interesting to me, that if you win the day at Hoover Dam as a female Legion courier, you are still granted the honor of being minted on a new Legion coin. This has a lot of implications, biggest of which being that a female champion has been immortalized for the first time in the Legion's history. Which would have long lasting and law-changing effects on the Legion as a whole, especially with women's rights.

@@GTAjunkie99 Every video game is a power fantasy. You are more than likely not as capable as your Fallout character. The Courier, arguably the most bad ass protagonist of any Fallout game, is way more powerful than you, me or anyone else here ever could be.
It will inevitably make women feel less useless and men think twice before using them as mere objects. Still the structure would be the classic men fight and build, women take care of children. Primitive but functional, as long it's respectful it's not THAT bad.
The effect wouldn't last long. I doubt the courier could hold together the Legion after Caesar dies, but when the tribes break into factions again, it would likely have a effect on one of them and cause it to either predominantly female or even for both genders. It would change nothing in the Legion with the time it has left.
I like to think my fem courier *was* going to hear the Legion out and get their side of the story when Caesar invites her to fortification hill. But they just couldn't keep their mouth shut about women. Annnnnd she proceeded to disintegrate Caesar with a Holorifle 5 minutes later.
once I got the mark of caesar, I tried my hardest to bite my tongue and go see him maybe just to see if I could talk him down or reason with him then and there but as soon as I heard the words of the guy manning the boat (the last clip) I introduced him to the less diplomatic end of my riot shotgun.
since I always play a female character, I can never play the legion because roleplaying is a big deal to me and I can't see any of my characters join the only faction in the game who treats women like shit

You can Take over the Legion but the faction seems to BE a Bit too cartoonishly evil and Not much developed since they seem all to BE the Same . They really should have taken way more inspirations from History have factions within the Legion different Characters maybe the Legion civilians and in my opinion instead of a bunch Raiders in Roman Cosplay make them instead NCR Rebels which would make more Sense and BE better Storywise than a bunch of Raiders with No real Connection to the NCR, Just Imagine the Story Drama and maybe after Caesar dies you could Play a Triumvirate Game to Fight to BE Augustus or Augusta
I remember the first time experiencing this when I played a female character for the first time in New Vegas. Assumed it wouldn’t make a difference, much like every other RPG. Was caught off guard when i was denied from entering the arena in Caesars camp for my characters gender as well as the warning Siri gave me about the two legionaries. Gave something heavy to think about both in game and in the real world…

Ever notice everybody who does this is always a low status legionary? Vulpes, Lanius, Caesar Pheonix and Lucius all never bring it up, for example.
It was supposed to be revealed by Caesar that he doesn't really have a bureaucracy, so he just split the nation into sex roles so he had half the nation maintain the state the the other half expand it. He was fine with people taking a less fixed role in society once he conquers the NCR, but until then he needs his tribals to be split up like this.
But I guess the tribal superstition and low class understanding doesn't just go away. Caesar can tell a legionary what to do, but he can't explain why it's important. He can't sit down with legionaries and explain what utilitarianism is, so instead he goes "fuck it, as long as you understand the orders who cares if you understand the reasoning"
I think that's a really cool take on the antagonists rather than just being meanies who do bad things because their leader is evil.
I mean, they still do bad things to a lot of people, just because they don't follow Caesar's ideologies.

When you argue that the legion is evil then so is the ncr and both evil factions are at war with each other and do some horrible shit to ppl like the ncr with the khans or the kings. Then you have the ability to talk to ppl that live under legions rule and theyre all happy because the roads are safe, they have no taxation and degenerate things like drugs and gambling are strictly forbidden. When you talk to ppl about the ncr you always hear they are the good guys but extremely incompetent and as mentioned sometimes straight up worse killers than the legion
I always thought they never really got the idea that Caesar seperates men and women for efficiency sake as you can't have the same people who bear future soldiers to also fight alongside them, not in a sort of prejudice manner.
They seem to just be conditioned to think "women = below men" when simply it's much more. I guess Caesar's initial idea gets lost when most of your army are a bunch of tribal men who've been forcefully assimilated and raised since childhood and still hold some childish values.
Cut content also reveals there would've been towns and such with civilians, men and women alike. So it's not like all women in the Legion would be slaves.

Honestly a female legionary courier would probabaly result in women gaining new rights within the legion as by minting a coin with the couriers image Caesar is effectively putting them on the same level of himself and the other mythical heroes and founders of the legion, and by making a woman one of the legions founding myths who knows maybe it might bring about change especially considering what Ulysses says about the legion changing as it moves west.
it could possibly shift the perception of women to be a bit more positive in the legion maybe, but I doubt it would improve their situation in the way of rights. you gotta remember in the real world that there were hundreds of female Empresses, Queens, Baroness' and Ladys that directly influenced the governance of numerous nations, kingdoms and empires, without really making any substantial change so far as women's rights were concerned.
@@Groobis I would argue that, there is a possibility the game does not give us a full picture of what living under legionary rule looks like I am not saying the legion is a fair society when it comes to gender rights by any means, and they are certainly much less progressive compared to the ncr (which go so far with it i would say it would harm their society in their home territories hard in the long run. Why conscript female soldiers when the male ones are biologically more expendable and physically more fit for the job? But fallout was never a super realistic focused post apocalyptic universe so i will chalk it up to that ).
The only legion area you get to visit is a military encampment, where all of the women seem to be slaves or servants, that move with the armies and there doesnt seem to be any wifes or families of the soldiers in the camp so they are probably at home. This was a thing that also happened in the real life roman legions its why a century was called that despite only having 80 fighting men in it the other 20 were slaves, but a legionary encampment was not a real picture of how society in actual roman towns, villages and cities worked. So i would argue that the same might apply here, while the status of women under legion rule is very very probably not great and they are certainly not viewed as equal, it could very well be less dire than what´s depicted here, where at the very least they don´t have to be worried about being constantly sexually assaulted like the woman in the video said and can very possible live relatively normal lives.
But alas they did not show actual legion territories in the game. I heard they intended to at one point but it got cut due to time constraints. It would have been fascinating to see for better or for worse how the average person under ceasar´s rule lived. Though their customs were probably not completely uniform since the societies under caesar consist of many conquered tribes with their own customs adding to it probably as well .

I dont think using actual Roman society to base what Legion society would be like is very reliable, as the Legion really only resembles Rome superficially. Remember, the faction isn't called "Ceaser's Empire" or "Ceaser's Rome," it's Ceaser's LEGION. by Ceaser's own admission, there really isn't much else to the Legion other than the military. given how Ceaser and especially Lanius talk about the way they conquer territories, its pretty clear that the Legion assimilates people and territories as a means of "Extracting resources" more so than Expanding their area of Governance/influence. and to a faction that is more or less centered entire around it's military, Slaves are far more valuable than free citizens.
Part of Ceaser's (very flimsy) justification for why he wants to take Vegas, and destroy the NCR, is that he believes that by conquering and absorbing NCR territory, His Legion will transform from a wandering army, to an actual functioning society made up of the best parts of both the NCR and the Legion. however, just Because that's his goal for the future, doesn't mean his society is run like that in the 'present'
@@Groobis Yeah true caesar's society is not meant to be completely 1:1 modeled after roman society, what i meant with that roman legion example was to give you a real life example of how life in a military encampment would look a lot different from a life in roman villages, towns etc.
But to your point about caesar's legion's conquered territories. The lore states, that caesar's legion is not exclusively a conquering, enslaving and directly subjugating force it does let a lot of settlements in it's territory mostly live their own lives, relatively untouched with a degree of autonomy as long as their pay their tributes and submit to overall legion authority a bunch of whom are way more modern than the tribal based legionary culture. And Caesar does also severely punish legion rulers who mismanage or exploit the people they are supposed to be watching over, knowing that if the people under his command don't actually h. So in legion territory a lot of settlements live relatively autonomously, they are protected from raiders and the roads are also kept safe so they can trade very safely. So caesar's ruling is also a bit different than one might assume from a glance at least in a fair amount of the settlements under it's control and from what it appears legionary rule is not unpopular in areas under it's control so one might say he already has a functioning society to some extent, though definitely not the most stable considering caesar dying would probably destabilize the whole thing and even if there is not a civil war the successor would probably not be as intelligent as caesar was and would probably mishandle the system of governing caesar set in place only focusing on conquest and military matters.
It is similiar to how rome managed it's territories. People often assume, that Rome just painted the map red, conquered, enslaved and romanized everyone they came across, but a fair bit of the time they left the territories they ruled with a fair bit of autonomy often ruled by local rulers but still subordinate to the provincial roman governor, but the fact stands that a lot of the people were mostly left to manage their own matters locally.
But yeah caesar's legion is definitely not 1:1 remake of rome especially since his army and thus the culture of the army seems to be mostly tribal based and thus are pretty much a different people from the other more modern settlements under legionary rule, which would probably cause a lot of conflict, if caesar didn't balance the equation, but it is a problem that will probably surface once caesar dies.

It's interesting to me, that if you win the day at Hoover Dam as a female Legion courier, you are still granted the honor of being minted on a new Legion coin. You'd LIKE to think that. But the Mojave ain't no fairy tale...
It will inevitably make women feel less useless and men think twice before using them as mere objects.
Still the structure would be the classic men fight and build, women take care of children.
Primitive but functional, as long it's respectful it's not THAT bad.
The effect wouldn't last long. I doubt the courier could hold together the Legion after Caesar dies, but when the tribes break into factions again, it would likely have a effect on one of them and cause it to either predominantly female or even for both genders. It would change nothing in the Legion with the time it has left.
Ulysses seems to agree.
I don't think the Legion lives long enough for that change even if they win.
I like to think my fem courier *was* going to hear the Legion out and get their side of the story when Caesar invites her to fortification hill.
But they just couldn't keep their mouth shut about women.

once I got the mark of caesar, I tried my hardest to bite my tongue and go see him maybe just to see if I could talk him down or reason with him then and there but as soon as I heard the words of the guy manning the boat (the last clip) I introduced him to the less diplomatic end of my riot shotgun.

since I always play a female character, I can never play the legion because roleplaying is a big deal to me and I can't see any of my characters join the only faction in the game who treats women like shit
Roleplaying is always confined to your imagination, you could start the game as a legion slave maybe?
@@PowerfulWizard even then, since your character is free at the start of the game, she would have no reason to side with the legion again. She's free to pick a faction who will treat her better, aka literally any other faction

You can Take over the Legion but the faction seems to BE a Bit too cartoonishly evil and Not much developed since they seem all to BE the Same . They really should have taken way more inspirations from History have factions within the Legion different Characters maybe the Legion civilians and in my opinion instead of a bunch Raiders in Roman Cosplay make them instead NCR Rebels which would make more Sense and BE better Storywise than a bunch of Raiders with No real Connection to the NCR, Just Imagine the Story Drama and maybe after Caesar dies you could Play a Triumvirate Game to Fight to BE Augustus or Augusta

I remember the first time experiencing this when I played a female character for the first time in New Vegas. Assumed it wouldn’t make a difference, much like every other RPG. Was caught off guard when i was denied from entering the arena in Caesars camp for my characters gender as well as the warning Siri gave me about the two legionaries. Gave something heavy to think about both in game and in the real world…
