    i agree with two dancers below who stated that they were taught a gilssade is not a jump, but a glide. In french the word glissade actually means to glide, thus your feet hardly leave the floor.

      YFaloMe In the Cecchetti style, you are not allowed to slide the second leg in. So from the air, straight into fifth. It is definitely a style thing, I've seen so many different versions!

    Love the upcoming series idea "Foundations"! Great notes on the glissades - taking it from a Ho-hum little move to a sensational burst of movement. Note to self - use your core for power, not just the small bones of your feet to execute the step - I like that mental note!!!

    Hi Kathryn. This year I got on to a waiting list for vocational training. I feel like my petit allegro let me down. They invited me to audition again next year which I'm going to do, but I still feel like my petit allegro is lacking even though I've been working on it. In glissade for example, I feel like I have to choose between extending both legs in the air together and travelling, I can't do both together well. I'm scouring the Internet for help but apart from this video all the guide videos are for lyrical glissades which I can do. I think I'm just going to have to practice until I find the right feeling but I don't have much time. Any videos you can do on petit allegro is seriously appreciated! Thank you for this and all the things you've uploaded.

    When a dancer get a role(like aurora) how does (s)he manage to get into it? I wonder how they study about the character and make it as movements. Especially about classical ballet, normally other people did it so many times but interestingly the expressions are all different..!
    By this, its hard for spectators to say, 'this one is right and that wrong' but obviously there could be some bad performances besides technique's fails or just problems of taste. Then when do dancers judge their performances to fail in terms of expression?
    Plus, if it's possible, can you make videos for teaching expression method?
    (It is my first time to make a comment on youtube. I am an amateur dancer in Korea. Recently i found i want to dance all day long and all your videos are so helpful. Already said too many times by others but i must say, you are so inspiring! Hope your best luck.
    Gros bisous)

    Dear Katie
    Were you born naturally turned out and flexible or did you have to work up to it? I have been stretching and doing turnout exercises daily for as long as I can remember, but I still don't feel I make the same progress as other people who are naturally looser. Is there a reason for this?
    By the way, thank you for being such an inspiration!!

    • @MarijeK
      @MarijeK 7 лет назад +5

      Alice Hunter You made this comment ages ago, but since no one answered you: turn out has to do with ligaments and bone structure, as well as muscle tightness (or looseness if you're lucky). So, while some have results from stretching, most people will eventually run into their limits. And stretching will not change your hipbones. That is why professional ballet schools select their students after an audition, and they will check their natural abilities. Turn out is something you're born with (or not, unfortunately) , and need to learn to work with.

    First of all, thank you for having this RUclips channel, all of your videos have been insanely influential in getting me back into ballet. I'm a former theater student, 17 years-old, short, and very curvy. I love dancing, and my teachers say I have promise, but I was warned against trying to pursue ballet as a career because of my age and body type. I was wondering if there is any possible outlet for a career in classical ballet that would allow for my body type as well as starting out a little older?

    Hi Katie! Thank you for more wonderful videos and tips! They always help me so much!!
    My question is; how do you overcome a dancing plateau? I have been working really hard this last year and have been having weekly privates yet I still feel there is too much that I struggle with and that doesn't come more naturally. How do I push through this while keeping my confidence in tact? It's so easy to just let it convince me that I am not made for dance. If you have any experience with this or tips could you please share them? I am struggling a lot with this right now and any tips would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you again for all that you do! 💜

    Hi! I figured you would have some insight on injuries because you said you had your ankle problems in the past. My IT band is extremely tight, ive had numerous pts tell me this. They've massaged both out (most pain I've ever felt in my life!), used kt tape, and given me stretches to do daily. the tape and massages have worked in the past but when I try to do the stretches they recommend it makes the pain worse. When I feel the pain it's this spasm that is sharp and then I can't straighten my leg(s) for about a minute to about 5 minutes. It really kicked up at my intensive last summer. It's a really scary feeling when this happens and I'm guilty of not stretching it anymore because stretching it makes it more frequent. I'm not sure what I should do, it is still super tight but when I don't interfere I don't experience any pain, or If I do it's once every few months.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks so so much!

    I was an RAD student, now I take class in NYC (I am a Musical Theatre dancer). When I was training in RAD, some teachers said to do glissades like you (really jumping/getting off of the floor), others said that while both feet need to be off the ground at the same time, they should never leave the ground more than an inch in a glissade, that way it will actually glide more. Do you know if that is correct teaching for RAD, or is it just a style preference depending on teacher?

    • @Picklescape
      @Picklescape 9 лет назад

      Vanessa Mitchell I too got told something similar. My RAD teacher said the tips of your toes should barely leave the floor on a glissade and it should go along, -----> whereas when I when to college and was taught by an international teacher, she wanted to see us elevate and leave the floor like Katie does. I suspected that it was an RAD teaching style that glissades should glide along more rather than pinging up, if that makes sense! One of the things I find interesting about Katie's videos is the difference in style and terminology from America to the UK, it's helping me become more versatile I think, as I learn to work with both styles and vocabularies!

    • @vemovasnena
      @vemovasnena 9 лет назад +1

      Yea I think thats what it is, thanks, Im glad someone else has experienced the same thing. It was definitely interesting learning the differences in terminology and style when I moved from Canada to NYC.

    • @meowool
      @meowool 8 лет назад

      I think it's a style thing, I was a an RAD student as well and my teach said we should be able to cover the studio in 3 or 4 glissades (it was. I kinda thought it was a development from a glissé, where you are barely off the floor.

    • @oxitocyn
      @oxitocyn 6 лет назад

      same. My RAD teacher says glissades aren't jump... Besides glissade mens 'slide' in French

    • @dancingballet
      @dancingballet 6 лет назад

      In RAD, glissade strictly speaking does not leave the floor. They differentiate the off the floor glissade by calling it a "glissade piqué". That being said, her main point of the video is to emphasise the quickness of the extension and closing into 5th, and other technique like turning out and stretched feet.

    At 3:53 where you show a turned out foot for the takeoff leg for grand saut de chat, it's never done like this for real at the highest level including you. I was sucked into doing it like this and it killed my jump. Any big jump will require a totally parallel foot but it's so brief nobody sees it unless you freeze in in youtube with the space bar and step frame-by-frame with the , key. But in the air, the dancer should hold the splits in a beautifully turned out position where it can be seen and you can turn out on the landing downstage foot, but not when it's taking off.

      I have the same exact thing! I've been told a lot of people have it but if it hurts like mine did try sitting on your butt with your legs in front if you and turning out then just lift that leg (maybe even put an ankle weight on it or something) to strengthen the joint. Also try battements laying on your back with the leg that hurts. Hope this helps!!!

      I'd also try massaging your leg daily for a few minutes and always think about using floor pressure and the underneath of your leg in grand battements; as you could be tensing the muscle when you lift.
