Vermont - The US Explained

  • It’s one of the most rural and least populated parts of the country. Covered in forests and mountains, filled with lakes and islands, Vermont is renowned for its scenery and splendor. It’s a land of small farms and towns, tucked into tiny valleys and along the shores of Lake Champlain, a place where covered bridges cross small creeks and rivers, and syrup is harvested from maple trees. Its history, politics, and culture stand out starkly from much of the US and it’s one of just a few states to have been an independent country before joining the union. The southern portions of the state seem to cuturally be diffrent from those in Louisville and the Cincinnati suburbs so I think a lot of the appalachian and southern regions of the state can be missed out upon in terms of discussions about the state.

      6 different regions in Kentucky: western coal fields, Jackson purchase, knobs, bluegrass, pennyroyal, and eastern mountains/coal fields. 120 counties despite our small size which is the 4th most of any state. christian county is wet (alcohol sales), bourbon county is dry, and barren county has some of the most fertile land in the state lol. versailles(ver-say-ols), louisville(loo-uh-vool), and athens (ayy-thins) all have interesting pronunciations; don't ask me why. i'm from western ky on the ohio river, live in Lexington which is the heart of central ky, and hike in eastern ky at least once a week. we have more miles of navigable waters than any state other than alaska. we have over 1000 documented waterfalls and over 2500 documented natural arches and about 50% of the state is forest. we are huge on bourbon, horses, agriculture, and college basketball. louisville, lexington, and northern ky (the greater cincinatti area) are the only major cities. the kentucky derby is the oldest continuous annually held horse race in the usa. mammoth cave is the largest mapped cave system on earth. Beer cheese, bluegrass music, corvettes, hunter S. thompson, muhammad ali, george clooney, johnny depp, abe lincoln, dippin dots, post-it notes, ale-8, the song "happy birthday to you", and too many fast food restaurants to name all originate from here. fort knox with the gold might be a nice topic to touch as well. Some things I forgot to mention in the community post that might still be worth mentioning:
    - Dairy farming wasn't actually the original main agriculture; originally it was actually sheep farming (though dairy farming is certainly more prevalent now and has been for some time). Vermont was almost entirely deforested to make room for sheep farming, so most of the forests in the state are not old-growth forests.
    - Burlington has good bike infrastructure (especially for its size).
    Another thing worth mentoring is that creemees are just our word for soft-serve ice cream, so a maple creemee is just maple-flavored soft-serve ice cream.
    Thanks so much for the video!

    I've lived in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont nearly my whole life, currently residing in Saint Johnsbury. Great video, mentioning many of the unique points of the states environment and culture. A few things I'll list here which I think should've been mentioned:
    • The Jay Peak and Burke Mountain ski resorts (also the subjects of a major financial fraud scandal)
    • The Kingdom Trails mountain biking network based in Burke
    • Several other notable companies founded or based in VT besides Ben & Jerry's include: Cabot Creamery, Green Mountain Coffee, King Arthur Flour, Burton Snowboards, as well as Fairbanks Scales and the Fairbanks-Morse company, the Fairbanks family political-business dynasty that existed in the state, and the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium which also has one of the oldest meteorology stations in North America.
    • Other historic sites in the state such as: Bennington Battle Monument, Ticonderoga Steamboat at the Shelburne Museum, the Constitution House in Windsor, the Precision Museum and manufacturing hub in Windsor and Springfield that supplied many important machines around the country from late 18th-early 20th centuries, the Stellafane Astronomical Observatory in Springfield where telescopes have been built since the 1920s, the Old Stone House museum in Brownsville which was one of the first racially integrated schools in the country and where Alexander Twilight was an educator, Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre which is a racetrack the current governor Phil Scott has raced at and many NASCAR drivers, and lastly the Hot Air Balloon festivals in Quechee Gorge and Post Mills. There is also a connection with the founders of AT&T and early telecommunication inventors Theodore Vail and others in the town of Lyndon. Also the rock band Phish was founded in Burlington. There are probably other notable things I'm forgetting but overall this was a great video about the totally unique and little-known Green Mountain state.

      Housing is such a hot topic here in Vermont, I understand the knee-jerk reply but also know that we’re going to have to make even more room for transplants, and soon. Vermonters are seriously struggling to find places to live and they’ve all been bought by out-of-staters, they’re feeling like it’s now not possible for them to become homeowners and it really sucks - I hope, as a new Vermonter, you can understand at least a little that your new neighbors have had long Vermont experiences before you got here. Welcome, and I mean that totally wholeheartedly, but please be kind because that’s how Vermonters roll. That’s what makes us awesome.

There won’t be housing built. What is built is full before the ground is even broken. Jobs pay only extremely low wages. Government isn’t really a thing here. Mostly unelected select boards full of rich out of staters. Locals can’t stay in Vermont. The state has some of the lowest wages in the country and some of the most expensive housing. Vermont is a playground for the rich now. Working class need not apply.

    I will add a little bit of information about the political oddness of being a very liberal and progressive state while also still having a Republican governor. Although we dont have a lot of them, most Vermont GOP members are moderate, like Phil Scott. Fiscally conservative but socially moderate and they tend to disagree with the behaviors of the national GOP. A lot of Vermonters don't vote along party lines and we have open primaries so anyone can vote for any party, not just what you are registered for. I think this probably helps select a more well rounded and moderate candidate than either of the extremes.

    The one big cultural thing I'd like to ad is Vermont is very anti-big business is on a completely other level when it comes to buying local products. As a result, Vermont lacks things like a Bank of America atm or more than one Walmart for the whole state...or a Target. Vermont also is obsessed with naming things "Vermont ____ Company", since that company is probably the only one in their industry in the state. XD
    Also, billboards are illegal in Vermont and they are very strict about how large a road sign can be before it is legally considered a billboard. Gotta protect that mountain scenery!

    Anything above 75°F was unusual. 🤔

    • @BenNawrath
      @BenNawrath Год назад +2

      Plenty of 90 degree days when I was a kid (45 now), and 80 was totally typical. I agree there’s probably more now, but I think people tend to forget the infrequent things and just remember averages.

    • @BJCMXY
      @BJCMXY Год назад

      @@BenNawrath during my childhood, I remember only one summer where there were enough days in a row that it was called a heatwave.
      Now there are so many days like that, that it passes without comment.
      However, it is misleading that I say "days" when I was mainly talking about the nights.
      Unlike a lot of people, I remember more of my childhood than most.
      I, also, am heat sensitive due to an incident called Heat Exhaustion, which is the precursor of heat stroke, when left unaddressed...and that may affect my view on temperatures, but only after that incident occurred.
      Mainly I remember most days having vast differences between day & night temps, & there being a lot of dewy mornings... though that doesn't mean there weren't any places where the average temperatures remained above the dew point in Vermont, but mainly it wasn't as hot as it has been this last decade.
      Also. I would cite sources. But for some stupid reason the search engine is not cooperating with what I am asking for. NOAA also isn't cooperating on that front either. As I keep getting the bar charts, and not the numbers used in those graphic.
      Not a fan of graphics and charts because they can obfuscate the information if you aren't sufficiently familiar with how they work.
      Anyways.
      The point is that I remember that people would babble about anything that approached anything over 80°F.
      Basically anything unusual about the weather was a topic of conversation, and I remember people talking more about things above 75°F than they did if it was normal weather. Normal temperatures weren't a topic of conversation when I was a kid, and that's why I set it at 75°F since the moment it started to reach towards the 80s, it would literally be a hot topic of conversation.

    • @BJCMXY
      @BJCMXY Год назад +1

      I, also, am referencing my grandmother's memory of things from the 50s to today when it comes to Vermont weather norms. She and my grandfather moved here during the early 50s, and they have lived in the state ever since aside from a two year block where my grandfather was going to boat building school.
      My main point was the humidity part.
      However, your point about 75°F is a bit off, since that was my mark for what was considered normal, not that it didn't get up to 80°F, but that it was unusual for it to go up that high on a consistent basis.

    Vermonter here from Bennington county! I often forget how rural it is compared to other states because I am so used to it! I live in a small tourist town that gets a lot of flatlanders and you can tell local businesses will amp up the "Vermontyness" in order to appeal to them. there is so much maple syrup, you go to the shoe store and there will be maple syrup for sale and on display next to the shoes! Its a beautiful place to live but I cant say I dont get bored... being a teenager in such a rural state most of what me and my friends do to pass the time includes driving around and sitting in fields listening to music, haha! only other issue with the state is the second home buyers driving up housing prices all over, so many people ive worked with at local businesses or restaurants can barely afford to live here anymore, and some have been forced to move out of state then commute. during covid so many rich people came up to buy second houses to get out of the cities and locals not being able to work + rapidly rising housing prices has pushed so many out :( we will always welcome out of staters because tourism is a large part of our economy but it is hard not to hold a little resentment when they are driving up prices everywhere in the state, I hope that things get better in the coming years. thank you for the video! it is always cool to hear people talk about Vermont since it is not very common to!

      I was born in St. Johnsbury and have big families ties to the state. After living all across America I’m saving up to move back to Vermont. I want to keep my state full of the generations of family that have called it home. For what it’s worth I have witnessed what’s happening in Vermont happen in every small town in America. I see it happening in Old Orchard Beach Maine. 29 Palms California. Fernandina Beach Florida. Williamsburg Ma. And so many more small towns are being flooded with out of staters and people with big money driving out locals. It’s a shame. That’s exactly why I’m moving back to Vermont so I can not be a part of a problem but rather the solution. I’m going to start a farm and a cat rescue on my homestead while I pursue commercial real estate across the country. I plan on opening some restaurants in Vermont and paying people a true living wage because it’s a passion of mine after spending 10 years working in the service industry being stuck in poverty. I want to bring jobs and livelihoods to the beautiful state my family calls home. Please don’t go anywhere!

My family has been in the same region (Bennington County) since pretty much forever. The house I grew up in was an old stagecoach stop on a toll road between Vermont and New York and was built in 1790. You can still see one of the pillars from a gate if you know where to look.
